    I’ve been using my benq monitors with eye care for about a year, and I’ve noticed that my videos have a blue tint on other screens. The benq have the blue channel turned down to help take care of your eyes. So I really needed this video from you Jay! Thank you!

    I'm a complete noob to color grading, but you don't have to be Steven Spielberg to know that having a standardized and calibrated monitor is absolutely critical. I have a slipshod three monitor setup which consists of an ancient gaming monitor and ultra-cheapie screen, both native 1080p, and my recent purchase of a 34'' Class 21:9 UltraWide 5K2K Nano IPS LED Monitor with HDR 600. Being the total noob, I thought that a color calibrated monitor would include its own calibrator. Ha!
    I'm a fledgling videographer shooting with Sony's full 4K resolution triple sensor HDR PXW-280Z, and plan to transition this to my own source of employment with weddings, events, commercial work, etc. The X-Rite Display Pro Plus, after a little investigation, jumped out as being a superior colorimeter and calibrator. It's a bit pricier than some of the other recommended devices, but when you've invested as much in your business as I have so far, quibbling over a couple hundred bucks is silly if it means having a near-color perfect 4K image from which to make accurate decisions about grading.
    I've taken about twenty or so calibrations so far just using X-Rite's software - which is solid and extremely easy to use, even for a noob like me; but it has taken some experimentation with gamma curves and other settings to optimize my output. Meanwhile, LG has their own new calibration tool, the "LG Calibration Studio", which - frustratingly crashed every single time with errors about my usb device connection. Some Googling revealed that LG's software requires only a single monitor connection to your video card, which is an absurd limitation. I cannot even simply disable the other two monitors; I have to physically remove the DP and HDMI cables from the card before the calibration process will complete. However, I stress that LG's software produced *much* more consistent and pleasing results, overall, than X-Rite's software. I suppose that this only makes sense, since LG designed it specifically for this/these monitors.
    It is also worth noting, as I do not believe it was covered in the video, that the X-Rite Profiler has a rather indispensable feature, only accessible by enabling the "advanced" mode from the home screen. It's really not all that different from the simplified interface, as most of the settings will be familiar or should be left in their default state. However there's one change that you might consider in the advanced workflow, and that is increasing your "patch set size" from "small" (118 patches) to "large" (461 patches). This will most definitely triple your sampling time, but we are talking maybe twenty or so minutes. If you've paid for this powerful little instrument, then you want your monitor to operate at its optimum capacity and accuracy, so who is really going to quibble about twenty minutes? After saving your new ICC profile, you can access the QA screen which will take another reading of your new calibration, and then compare it to its own color reference database, producing a final readout of your "delta-E" deviations. I don't understand many of the specific numbers or their implications, but I *do* know that the goal is to produce a calibration with the least amount of variance from the color gamut standard that you've selected. The LG Calibration Studio also includes a similar QA feature, but provides you with an easy to read chart displaying the referenced gamut's gamma curve with your new results. It's another reason that I prefer using LG's software, even with the pain-in-the-arse cable removal-reconnect requirement.
    I hope my experience will help out some of you. I'm still researching the details about the actual measurements and what the numbers mean, and I've yet to determine how to use my i1 Display Pro Plus to produce some kind of uniformity between all three of my monitors. Neither of my 1080p monitors, set for convenience's sake to a "fake" 2160p emulation in size - but not not actual resolution, are ever going to "match" the color timing of my 4K monitor, but I'm sure that there's a way to tweak them to an acceptable variance using the device. Setting each monitor's own calibration doesn't seem to help. I'm also learning about HDR and how its use in color grading, and how the i1's calibration works with HDR mode(s), but I'm not finding much documentation on these issues so far. I'd appreciate any advice!

    You can get all the features using lower models (like the i1Studio) so long as you use a third party (free) program such as DisplayCAL.

    Yo, Jay. I took your advice on the X-Rite Pro Plus. I did things the hard way with the product, because there is a lot of options. But on around the 8th or 9th time calibrating, I did get the right options. The product is equal to your recommendation, it works and I have noticed the changes. Better skin tones, better saturation, colors more "popping". Thanks...

    A really popular software is DisplayCal - you can download it off the internet. I haven't used it but a lot of pros do. If you want to see sales guys squirm ask them why one calibrator is 100 dollars and the other is 400 dollars. They will of course say one is better. Then say - isn't calibrated either calibrated or not? How can one calibrate better? Which is a great question. How can you sell a monitor calibration device that doesn't calibrate?

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 роки тому +1

      🤣🤣🤣 I've heard of DisplayCal before. I havent used it. But I agree. Its either calibrated or its not. The only difference between software and devices should be ease of use, not final results.

      The stars on my wrists were done by a friend of mine for free because it was part of his apprenticeship. He liked to dig. It hurt. The stars on my biceps is a longer story. Back when I was in a band we wanted to get similar tattoos as kind of a "band thing," but we didn't want to get the band name tattooed on us just in case the band ended badly. So we each got a pair of nautical starts (we each have a different color, and they're located in different places). I also have "Music Saves Lives" tattooed on my chest, just to change things up a bit.

    Since I got my i1 Display Pro Plus from Father Christmas, I have been unable to use the X Rite software. For some reason I was unable to register my product or get the relevant serial number from the packaging that came with the camera. X Rite ignored all my mail.
    Thankfully I chose the model that allowed it to play nicely with third-party software, such as DisplayCal.😀

    • @HikingWithCooper

      No. You need the regular Pro version, not the Pro Plus. Their (CAlman, the software you need for calibrating LGs) approved colorimeter list has a lot of previous-gen devices but no support for a lot of newer ones.

    A question. Are the calibrations always relying on the software? For example, would you need to re-calibrate it every time you switched machines or reinstalled Windows? That appears the be the case but I'm not entirely sure.
    Also, Will their software work on Linux?

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 роки тому

      The profiles are software base, so yes, you will have to re-calibrate when you switch machines...not sure about reinstalling Windows, but I would assume so. As far as Linux is concerned, the device will work but not the software. I recommend getting DisplayCal for Linux. It's free and open source and it works great from what I hear.

    Hey Jay can I borrow it !?
    ;) hahah just joking ... Very useful tool , absolutely ... but it's not cheap ... I mean : once you've calibrated those 3 monitors you work with "the-thing" will end up dusting on the shelf till your next monitor buy...
    Considering that, the best option is probably to buy it as a group and share it...
    if that makes sense ... (makes sense to me)

    • @JayLippman

      Calibrating your screen will help with that. You can use this on your laptop.

    • @JimRobinson-colors
      @JimRobinson-colors 3 роки тому

      When you upload you have to use correct gamma meta tagging so that the device ( iphone for instance ) knows what the intended gamma and color space is to display. This is an almost daily topic in all the FB forums - Resolve is a very powerful program - there are literally more ways to screw it up then to get it right. There is a website called the PostProcess - dot com that has really great information on getting the most consistent settings for most players. But beware that there are players in some browsers and OS that don't have any color management at all. Trying to make your stuff look good in everything is a dog chasing a tail. You compensate for one player and you end up screwing it up for others. So we can only use standards and gauge by standards - which is why you want to calibrate your monitor. If you are doing color grading - you should also use a break out device or card like a BMD decklink as well because the display shouldn't be using the OS restricted colors and needs a clean feed.

      If our monitors are too warm, we get used to it and that white becomes white to us. Correcting the actual color makes the colors "seem" wrong because they're different.
