As an Emmy award editor from the 60s, 70s & 80s things have come a long way for sure. I worked at the largest post facility on the east coast of USA where we had (26) 2" quad tape machines (later some Sony 1") (4) film chains (we invented the pan/scan system) an AMPEX HS-100 slo-mo machine. In each of the 4 edit rooms we had Quantel squeeze zoom, AMPEX ADO, grass valley triple re-entry switcher, and if course a heavily modified CMX system that can use up to 26 selectable I/p sources. In a other room we had the first CMX-600 non linear edit console. The result from this was an EDL on an 8" floppy to be used in one of the online edit rooms Each edit room was setup like a living room with a big couch behind meb coffee table, small end tables on each side of the couch. The walls had carpet on them for sound absorbing and carpeted floors. Back then everyone smoked EXCEPT in the edit & film chain rooms. Had a lot of fun those days. I went from cutting tape using a grease pencil, to manual electronic editing (punch & pray), to using time code (using eeco editor) then onto CMX and lastly AVID NLE. Happily retired now, but I restore old 2" quad video tape machines as a hobby
First: I most highly recommend the book, Vision and Art, the Biology of Seeing, by Margaret Livingstone. If, like myself, you are a newcomer to visual arts and / or someone who didn't take a formal course in video production, filmmaking or color grading, this book is a complete introduction to color theory, how the human eye perceives color, and how certain artists have made use of color. There are interesting insights and nuggets of practical information on every page. I purchased the Biology of Seeing a year ago, after Darren recommended it in another video. Making use of what I learned about color and light in this book, I've built a few interesting luma- and luminance-based transitions (learning Fusion is a separate challenge). For a "technical" book, it's written in a very easy to understand style, and the page layout presents the information clearly. Well done, Darren, recommending it again. And, second, thank you Darren for the terrific tour and slice of a day in the life. Have fun in Amsterdam.
Thanks Adam. Glad the book was good for you. Walter Volpatto got me on to it. Off to Amsterdam tomorrow so getting ready for a busy show!! All the best, Darren
Awesome tour, funny how our studios are very similar except my desk is behind the client couch and they sit directly in front of me so we can both see the client monitor if needed. Loved this!
Yes, me behind client couch would be perfect set up but I cant do it like that in my room due to how the door opens, and it works well as is. Would love to see your set up if its similar...maybe I can steal some ideas ? Always open to change!
Thanks for this - you have a beautiful facility. As a former audio studio owner (24 years) I’m impressed by the old Soundcraft board. It was a great British brand back in the day that I believe has got bought out. Agreed - regular exercise is key to aging well in the studio business.
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes the streamdeck is full of surprises, but the clock is great. Its the simple things sometimes. All the best and thanks for watching. Darren

Thanks for the studio tour. It was everything I hoped for and more. Much as I loved geeking out to your set-up, the most important bit for me was the trip to the gym. As someone who has screwed up their health from sitting for wa-aaay too long in front of a computer, the importance of getting out, going to the gym, and staying healthy is vastly underrated. Brighton is a great place, absolutely love it there, so I can see why you look so happy there with Baxter. Living the dream, Darren, albeit with broken ribs!

I'm a New York-based colorist and I listen to BBC 6 Music while I'm grading too! I'm currently transitioning from another platform to Resolve and finding your tutorials most helpful. And I agree the finish on the rear of the panels is far too shiny in the monitors so I've used black masking tape on the silver bits to eliminate the reflection. Thanks for the tour of your setup -- it's given me a few ideas for the next time my suite is upgraded.

Amazing studio tour. I now have my wishlist all planned out to upgrade my space…hitting the lottery may help but I can’t wait to getting a more professional setup. Hope your ribs heal quickly!!
Great video Darren. Love seeing old Brighton. Being an ex pat living in the states it's nice to see some of old stomping grounds. Not much has changed by the looks of it. For me, i'm just super excited to finally find out what candle you are burning in the suite. Phew, I can finally sleep at night :) Take care!
Baxter's just as well trained and obedient as my Bailey. 😀 When I injured myself at work earlier this year, the first thing I did to aid my recovery was get a "Stand Up" desk from Amazon. They really are worth their weight in gold. I also treated myself to the keyboard you recommended. It makes me feel like a Jedi waving my hand to turn the backlight on. Little pleasures.
Hey Frank. Yes only had the desk a few weeks and loving it so far. Baxter is just loved...he doesn't need to be obedient. I had to cut out tons more people stroking him to keep the content mildly on track! He's a great dog really.
Well about £400 too late then! They also released the M1 chip after I bought a £15K Intel Mac pro! You get used to it! Thanks Bill. Glad you enjoyed the tour anyway.
@@DarrenMostyn I also got the 2019 Mac Pro same setup as you, I feel the pain. Oh well, at least we can keep it a couple more years (until all software goes native silicon) then it can become a quite nice server.
@@nimrod7785 exactly! As long as it pays for itself in short time I dont really mind - Id still rather be on the Mac than PC for my main workstation - I have a nice ASUS laptop too.
Thank you Darren for this great video. I am new to Devinci and I have learned so much from your videos. I am a Audio Engineer by trade, but I am recreating my career. I have placed an order for the Mini Panel because, I believe it is the best tool that I can afford...lol to give me the best advantages in learning how to become a Pro-Colorist. I am using a pro BenQ monitor for editing and a LG C2 65 as my client and playback monitor. I will send pics of the studio in the near future. The tips on the lights and the Studio 4k answered a lot of my questions. Take care of those ribs and we will see you in your next video.
I absolutely love the look of that staircase, but modern building codes (at least here in the US) absolutely do not let us do stairs like that for exactly the reason you found out! Thanks for the tour (both of the office and of Brighton) and I hope you heal up quickly!
The houses here in my street are about 140 years old - maybe more! Modern building codes here wouldn't allow it either, but it is a beautiful staircase and I bet they don't get built as well as this place was back then ! Thanks for the good wishes...Im getting better quick, thanks.
That was great, Darren. So sorry to hear about your ribs, it must be painful! I have a colleague here in Italy from Brighton. I’ve heard about a book called “Paint with Light (s)”- not sure! I’ve never seen it but apparently is great! Thank you very much for this great tour!!! Cheers to you and the beautiful Baxter 🐾
small point, high cri doesnt mean the actual color temp will be accurate. This is why HMI arent as high cri as most leds these days, but the color temp it is giving off is actually extremely accurate.
Thx for the tour. My take away is the mobile thing👍 not to be a smartass, but you can run all of your lightings through the elgato combined with WiFi plugs and/or IFTTT. Once it is set up you will never go back. (Guess the curtain/blinds, whatever it’s called in english, too)🙏
Loved the tour, I wish some of the footage had a greater DOF so the gear in the background wasn't so blurry, after all that is the stuff you were talking about. 🙂
sorry. We were in really bad light. When we lit the studio the monitors just glared and I really only had about 3 hours to record the tour. Took me 2 days to edit. Im aware its not great quality, but I just dont have the resources or time to film it like a promotional video. Hope it didnt ruin your enjoyment too much. I also know the audio is bad on the vlog bits. It will all get better in time. Im a full time colourist and UA-cam is just a side part of what I do. Thats whyy its taken me 6 months to actually record this! Glad you loved the tour anyway and your point made is a fair one. All the best, darren.
Ahh Brighton, I'm just down the coast in Ebo (it's what I like to call it to make it sound cool). Studio looks amazing! I would love to have all that equipment (doesn't mean I'd have a clue how to use it or course). Great to see you at Resolve Con. Just catching up on the panel discussion because colour is basically a total mystery to me.

For workstation-type use, the Mac is too outdated for my taste. I was surprised you weren't using a Blackmagic camera for your UA-cam camera. A wonderful tour Darren, thanks!
Hi Andy. BMD cameras no good for autofocus. Sony A7Siii has amazing autofocus - thats why. Also I don't need to grade it...just set to cinetone and its done. Saves me time. Mac works for me as I dont like Windows.
@@DarrenMostyn True, the touch screen autofocus is not exactly ideal. But... there is the DJI RS3 Pro with Lidar for autofocus if a person wanted to throw money at the issue.
Thanks for the info about issues with the Wacom. I am new to Wacom and Resolve and that had been frustrating me, but I thought it was because I am new to both.
Loved the tour. Just got an office so I'm looking into the essential gear. I got hung up on the client reference monitor and had a question about the Panasonic you have. I can't seem to find any specs on it. Does it do 100% Rec.709 for broadcast mastering as well as 95%+ DCI-P3 for theater mastering? Did you calibrate it? Do you have 2 separate inputs for different mastering processes?
Really nice setup you’ve got there Darren. If you were wanting to be a bit more of a minimalist, say editing on the go, could you run a MacBook Pro with an iPad Pro displaying the source monitor? I’ve edit on a 27” IMac and the actual source monitor window is so small I can’t see anything. Cheers mate
Love the set up and I hope one day i can get there... Thoughts on the LG Oled a2. I am still new to this and on a budget. I am looking for a good clean feed monitor i can color grade off for weddings. I do have the sypder calibrator tool. Just looking for something That will work but will not break the bank.
Hi. The main grading suite is 25 square metres. Its a good square room with great natural light when you want it. I love being able to black it out for grade but have sunlight beaming through when not. High ceilings and Aircon. Also central Brighton, so it's really my perfect studio.
"... Means my phone is off the desk, means I can casually keep an eye on it when I've got TWENTY THREE THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED FORTY SEVEN unread emails..." - Darren Mostyn
Sharp eyes - but its 29,661 now! Life is too short to read every email you get! Live a bit! People will get hold of you somehow if its important. I prob get 200 emails a day of which 4 need really answering - better things to do with my life tbh.
And now I'm depressed. Your desktop monitors are better than my reference monitor. Flanders monitor? Maybe in my next life. (Not to mention the panel and the rest.)
Hi Tomas. So please remember I have been doing this for over 25 year. This set up has been perfected over a long time, selling off old kit, buying items that were a not good idea - that cost thousands of pounds 20 years ago that now would be a hundred pounds thanks to companies like BlackMagic Design - over 25 years this is my perfect set up (albeit a Flanders HDR monitor - next purchase likely!). Build your kit as you grow and remember that I'm not a better colourist due to my kit. Each job, I invested a bit more. Then as my clients grew you take a chance maybe on some new kit. I had a huge CRT Grade 1 Sony monitor you've not even seen here which cost me more than the Flanders DM250! But that paid for itself over time. One step at a time ... You dont need a panel to make it work, you need a panel when enough work is in you know you need a panel. All the best, darren.
@@DarrenMostyn Good morning Darren:) Thank you for your comprehensive and kind message:) You are of course right. They say it's the destination that's important, not the journey. I actually thrive on finding low cost alternatives. It's fun. I have to distinguish to what extent I need the equipment and to what extent it's a performance for clients. I just use 2 tablets and a stream deck with macros programmed in. I have exactly what I need at my fingertips. To stay humble, one has to remember their beginnings. I made my first video on my old Amiga 1200, I'll never forget it. That computer changed my life. You should know, Darren, that you're one of the few people I take seriously among youtubers. I consider you my mentor. Thanks a lot and good luck:)
Thanks Tomas. The streamdeck has really changed the way Resolve works for people without a panel. I use it and I DO have a panel. Thanks for your kind words and glad to be of help to you. Thanks Darren great tour of yer studio I've just finished my Workstation build looking at the Proart UCG monitor for that
thanks foor the tour, learned a lot for the future.
Amazing studio tour. I now have my wishlist all planned out to upgrade my space…hitting the lottery may help but I can’t wait to getting a more professional setup. Hope your ribs heal quickly!!
Thank you so much. Feeling good compared to last week!!
Very interesting thanks Darren and now I can justify to my wife why I need a beer full of fridge in my office :) Hope those ribs get better soon.
Every 'office' needs a beer fridge! Ribs are well on the mend thank you!
Hi Graham. Candles first - the rest is easy!!
I'm still rockin' the Intuos 3!
Thank you for the link, don't know how I missed this! Amazing setup, I could live there!
I pretty much DO live here!!!! Certainly feels like it at the moment! Very busy!
@@DarrenMostyn ❤
Baxter's just as well trained and obedient as my Bailey. 😀
When I injured myself at work earlier this year, the first thing I did to aid my recovery was get a "Stand Up" desk from Amazon.
@@DarrenMostyn My Bailey, a Patterdale Terrier is just as obedient as Baxter. BTW love the lightweight and cheap vlogging camera at timestamp 35:30. 🤣
Will you please make a video about switching from a mouse to a Wacom table and what the benefits and work flow advantages are. Thank You
Thanks for sharing; more into editing but working on my coloring as I go.
Very cool set up & thanks for sharing was really interesting
Apple finally released the 3m Thunderbolt Cable. Loved the tour Darren, thank you!
Take care of those ribs and we will see you in your next video.
great fun! :-) I enjoyed the bonus outtakes :-)
Glad you like them!
Excellent video thanks. I learn a lot from your Davinci training.
I've been looking forward to this video! Glad to hear you're doing okay, despite the ribs thing.
Im getting much better and certainly over the worst! Thank you.
No offense, I don't want to be overly critical, but we do not see enough of that nice puppy! :D
haha Baxter! He's doing great thanks!! I'll get him in my next vlog style one for you! Cheers!
Great studio tour, I love everything in your studio
small point, high cri doesnt mean the actual color temp will be accurate. This is why HMI arent as high cri as most leds these days, but the color temp it is giving off is actually extremely accurate.
Fantastic stuff Darren!
Thx for the tour. My take away is the mobile thing👍 not to be a smartass, but you can run all of your lightings through the elgato combined with WiFi plugs and/or IFTTT. Once it is set up you will never go back. (Guess the curtain/blinds, whatever it’s called in english, too)🙏
Yes, elgato stream deck will run most things - no brainier! Best gadget I have!
Thanks for sharing Darren , found it really interesting.
Thanks Dale. Appreciated. I worked hard on this one.
Love you content ! Please do a video on how your second PC monitors your scopes !! I would love to see how you set it up!!
Very simple. BMD card in PC. HDMI out of ultrastudio 4K Extreme into PC via card/HDMI. Monitor is connected via displayport.
Got some great ideas for my own upcoming studio. Thanks for the tour, Darren!
Look forward to it Kaur.
@@DarrenMostyn I'll be sure to make a studio tour of my own when it's done!
Great to see the Lambrettas!
Mod weekender in Brighton - fab weekend every August Bank Holiday.
That “adobe premiere 1.0” comment was worth the price of admission.
Amazing grading studio, Love the desk layout!!!
Thanks. works very well.
thank you for sharing - great tour from a PRO
Nice trip! Nice to know which kind of Power Emergency Supply you choosed for your studio..🙂
Ah, no!! I forgot!!! Its the APC UPS. It sits behind the desk!! Sorry.
@@DarrenMostyn 😂electric power is a must these days! Thanks for sharing
That’s sooooooo much gear!!!! 😮. But I love it!!!
I got much more since that video. Ill do a new one one day!
Love your channel from Taiwan!!!!
Thanks so much Yisen.
Fantastic Darren.
Glad you enjoyed it
i love it, thanks for this video
Very nice. I did not notice any flickering in the monitors which is very nice.
I took it out with deflicker.
@@DarrenMostyn Well, that plug-in works 🤣
Thank you for making this great content.
Glad you enjoyed it Pieter.
I expect for the remainder of 2022 and well into 2023 there will be at least a monthly featuring Baxter the Studio Dog. He's beautiful!
Baxter can be a part ... I'll check with Lucy's schedule too! Baxter is an ace dog and friend - everyone loves him! thank you.
Im just back home in Brighton now. Was a great weekend. Looking forward to my own bed tonight I have to say!
@@DarrenMostyn welcome back to blighty! Hope those ribs are feeling better too :) Yep, nothing like getting back into you're own bed after being away!
I just love the setup. Goals for me
Its changed a bit since! Ill do a new 2024 tour in a few months when my last upgrade piece arrives!
@@DarrenMostyn thank you!
Awesome studio....super pro......I liked a lot...just be aware of EMF radiation caused for having too much electronic equipment in just one place.
Great Darren!! 🙌
Love this.. BRAVO
Glad you like it.
Awesome mate, love it! Any idea what your colour profile/ settings are for the client monitor both hardware and in your OS?
I’m jealous!
Awesome tour Darren! I wanna be like you someday :)
Sign up to my free email list (no catch, no spam, just free info). bit.ly/2RrjvpN Bear with me a few months but something in the pipeline I think you will like. Appreciate your support Josafet., All the best, Darren.
@@andynonimuss6298 Im very happy with the A7Siii - its auto-eye-focus is perfect and fast.
Fantastic channel!
Glad you enjoy it!
Thanks for the info about issues with the Wacom. I am new to Wacom and Resolve and that had been frustrating me, but I thought it was because I am new to both.
It’s driving me crazy!! I’ll be sure to do a video when I find a solution.
Better than disney for me 😜
Hope you get well soon mate
That was last August! Im all healed now - RIBS are good again!! Thanks.
Cheers mate
Johannes Itten - great great great great book!
The best... but it is now $500 to buy!!
@@DarrenMostyn I know! It’s crazy! 😂🤦🏻♂️
Great room! I need to get electric blinds for my room... except then I might jump out the window.
I only put them in this year. Ive had curtains in there for years!!! Wasn't expensive at all.
Love the set up and I hope one day i can get there... Thoughts on the LG Oled a2. I am still new to this and on a budget. I am looking for a good clean feed monitor i can color grade off for weddings. I do have the sypder calibrator tool. Just looking for something That will work but will not break the bank.
Hey Darren - what monitor or OLED display would you recommend today?
🔥🔥🔥‼️🔥
Lovely studio
thanks
Finally. 🎊 What's the floor size of the room?
Most of the money I earn grading also goes to records stores. Nice video man, greetings from Mexico City
I can relate!
@@DarrenMostyn Good morning Darren:)
Thank you for your comprehensive and kind message:) You are of course right.
I only give out good solid information. I just passed my DaVinci Resolve trainers re-certification today for V18, so even though I don't need this I want to be 100% sure Im qualified on what I teach. All the best my friend. Darren. (I remember Amiga 1200 BTW!).
Interesting. Personally I can start off with a really tidy desk and in two weeks, it looks like a hurricane hit it. I respect people that have the vigilance to keep things tidy. Didn't see your bass guitar in the video. Maybe next time?
Heal those ribs and feel better.
Bass Guitar is at home. This is my studio which is not a home set up. I'll get the bass in someday!! Ribs healing fast , thanks Jim. Off to IBC tomorrow so that will test them!
Epic!
Thanks James.
