I live in Tampa Florida growing up in the 80s and 90s there but when I was young I got to hang out at one of the bridge tender’s houses there on the intercoastal waterway next to Harbor Island and then show me how everything worked and what have you looking back on it now I would love to operate a bridge I think that is the coolest job
I was born & raised in Tampa, Florida, and I still call "The Cigar City" home! I'm almost 50, and I've seen all of the drawbridges across the Hillsborough River (Platt Street, Brorein Street, Kennedy Boulevard, CSX Railroad, Cass Street, Laurel Street, Columbus Drive, & Hillsborough Avenue) in action over the years!
I had to chuckle, because almost every person interviewed, said the same thing: “ people think we sit up here all day, and do nothing, just open and close the bridge, but we do a lot of things”. But none of them actually mentioned what else they do other than routine paperwork, and occasionally inspect the bridge for maintenance.😂
Such a nice presentation. Thank you for creating this and posting it up. I especially enjoyed the candidness of the Tenders . They keep the life of the machine intact. yeah? =^.^=
This is such a really cool gig. In another life I would've loved to have become a bridge tender

How long is a typical shift?
