    Whoa, I really learned so much from your review of this cuphead's animations. I like to see UA-camrs play this game, but never really pay attention to the character, I just like the way they move
    Your detailed explanations about their different ways of changing the mode and basically the little details of the animations really inspires me. I probably will go back and forth to your channel when I'm in desperate need of an inspiration
    especially this video, in particular
    Good job and thank you!

      My apologies, this video used to have a different beginning but I chopped it out cos it was crap, so this new time stamp is at 5:51
      Basically as Cuphead goes to shoot his charge shot, I cut it to the plane releasing a charge shot.

    Cuphead has my most favorite soundtrack of any game. Plus I'd love to see cuphead inspire new animation in this style or just more hand drawn animation in general. Flash animation just doesn't have the look or fluidity of traditional animation, even if it's just drawn directly on a computer. Too many western studios rely to much on cheap flash animation that looks lazy and nowhere near as alive as traditional. I know it's a lot harder to animate that way but the results in the end just look much better. These animators could even take the route of anime and only animate at 8 to 12 frames per second and save higher frame rate animation for more important scene like action scenes

    • @VideoGameAnimationStudy
      @VideoGameAnimationStudy  6 років тому +3

      Yeah, I think Cuphead is definitely doing wonders for more traditional hand drawn stuff, even if it's still digital, like Skullgirls.
      Heck, even Sonic Mania, including its intro animation, has had a lot more thought and consideration put into the animated sprites.

  • @kenjiparis9050

    Can't lie. Ik you're not using the animation on your channel as before because of the cost, but I love the puppet. It's brilliant.

  • @caroodraws
    @caroodraws 2 роки тому +36

    Cuphead is the ultimate example of style over substance (not in a bad way), because EVERYTHING (and I mean everything) about how the game is designed lets the animation shine... Which it does, brilliantly! I can't think of any other games that were created FOR an aesthetic that pull it off quite as well as Cuphead does, probably because the concept of bullet hell games is fundamentally very simple. It truly blows my mind how well this game was artistically and mechanically designed and what excellent choices the developers made to support their vision.

      Video Game Animation Study I know it’s a year old but I’m actually doing a 3D cartoon style platformer horror game inspired by the pre coded Max Fleischer cartoons that were aimed for mature audiences like swing you sinners and Minnie the moocher and I want to make sure it’s fully perfect and hit its full potential instead of being another typical and generic indie horror game with a unique art style.

    6:34 Usually we call this telegraphing.The boss is slightly giving a hint as to what its doing.Like in this example,Grim Matchstick is charging his fullscreen flamethrower attack yet since its such a devastating move it needs some form of windup aka telegraphing.

      When a character in an animation does this, it's anticipation. It serves a similar purpose, except it's more to give the character's following action more weight to it and to make it look more natural. For example, it would look unnatural to see a pitcher throw a baseball (the action) without him winding-up (the anticipation) first.
      That's one of the reasons I think Cuphead is ingenious: The over-the-top anticipation animations that old cartoons are known for also telegraph the bosses' attacks to the player.

  • @ivanmegafanboy1981

    On Megaman 11's defense; Mega man's animation is stiff on purpose, to avoid the floatiness and slowdown of input that happened in Megaman 7 or 8 (I disagree with that decision, but its their game). But I must say that the rest of the enemies and stage elements look nicely animated.

  • @Logan001

    Great break down of the animation. I really liked the bit about the rounded characters, and how the juxtaposition of the comfort of curves caused them to feel even more menacing. A really good thing to consider when doing character design.

      Dan Root I'm not sure exactly, as I'm not an animator (or artistically gifted in anyway for that matter!), but possibly less rapid/drastic movents of the puppet's mouth and pupils would be make for a smoother presentation. Kinda funny that I'm making this comment on a video about Cuphead's animations. Maybe there is a techinque to be picked up from Cuphead's animations and adapted into your own.

    Not really a fan of just how telegraphed enemy attack’s have to be now. I liked it better when the telegraph was subtle. You could see or hear it, but if you were not paying attention it would hit you. It’s too flashy these days, no risk.

    • @VideoGameAnimationStudy
      @VideoGameAnimationStudy  6 років тому

      I honestly can't think of any other games that are as telegraphed as in this game, but they have to be in Cuphead because of the animation.

      Dan Root I can. Any game that flashes something or changes the color or draws a line or picture across the screen is too telegraphed. And any game that changes the color of an enemy not subtly is also too telegraphed. Quite simply put, the boss should not change its appearance. Show the attack through animation, nothing else. No assists.

    Not sure if this was mentioned anywhere but is it just me or does the audio and visuals seem off? I noticed the "Video Game Animation Study" Intro title card is visually missing, but the audio is there. It was honestly a little jarring to have the audio mention one thing and the visual show up 5 seconds later. Apologies if this has been addressed/mentioned before.

      @Onhyx27 Yes, something has happened and the video has de-synced at some point. I edited part of the video out (the intro) some years ago, but that's now caused problems. I need to look into it.

    You're a see-er. You see things. Very nice video!! Wish Cuphead had an easy mode so I could actually enjoy the game to the end. Still happy I purchased it to support such a genuis studio.

    I think the gameplay is at odds with the art style, you even mention it briefly. I love hand drawn, cel style animation, but the gameplay doesn't give you a chance to enjoy it or soak in all the little details. I've always found it strange that the devs wanted to make a game with this art style and somehow decided that the gameplay should be Contra

      Eh, I dunno, I think it works. The sinister appeal of the bosses makes them prime for tense battles.
      I'd be interested in what a more platform-based game would've been like.

    Hey you need to do your fact checking better. Cup head was in development for around 7 years. Straight from the wikipedia:
    "Cuphead was the first game by StudioMDHR, a Canadian indie game development studio consisting of brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer.[1] Additional animation work was contributed by Jake Clark, with programming lead by Eric Billingsley.[4] Its development began in 2010"

      Oh, did I say it wasn't in for development for that long, or..?

    • @Ereson
      @Ereson 6 років тому

      You said it was only in development for four years, when it was actually six-
      seven.

    • @VideoGameAnimationStudy
      @VideoGameAnimationStudy  6 років тому

      Oh, I think what I might have said was "it was in development for years"

      imgur.com/a/mfxg55N
      "This game took around four years to make." 10:16 mark.
      I'd suggest just adding in a correction with the closed captioning stating that it is actually seven years that the game was in development for.

      Ahhh yeah, I was probably going off since the trailer or something. Thanks for the correction, and thanks for watching to the end!
