    Woo-Hoo for zero days! I am enjoying all of your videos. They are beautiful and inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing! ( I literally had to LOL at the horse back riders and them not responding to you.. and... not response heehee) That makes me grumbly sometimes. I just tell myself they didn't hear me?

      Hey Tracy… i’m so glad that you’re enjoying the videos. That truly makes my day.
      I do the same thing when I pass someone on trail, speak to them and they act like I’m not even there. “…and, no response.”

    You hike at a very fast pace . Is that typical for long hikes? I’ve done 12 mile hikes in one day can’t imagine doing 18 with 3000 to 4500 foot elevation gains

    • @TheHikingRev
      @TheHikingRev  Рік тому +1

      It all depends upon the terrain and the Elevation Gains. If the trail is smooth, flat and free of obstacles, then I can usually get in a lot of miles per day. 😁

    How much water do you carry usually? Between refill stops?

    • @TheHikingRev
      @TheHikingRev  2 роки тому

      It depends on heat, humidity and the distance between water sources. I AVERAGE 1 liter for every 4 miles. More the hotter it is.

      @@TheHikingRev I agree, but it looks a lot different now from. what it was when I went through in June 2006. There is a lot less snow for you to get through.

    Thanks Pastor - you’re inspiring this 61 year old soon to be retiree. I plan to do some 4-8 day backpacks this summer and the Colorado Trail next summer, and after that who knows? I hiked portions of the JMT in 1987 including Mt. Whitney with about a 60 lb pack! I now have a lot of the same equipment as you - some already bought and some on my wish list. I’m enjoying hiking in my Lone Peak 4’s. How did the Arc Blast work for you?

    • @TheHikingRev
      @TheHikingRev  4 роки тому +1

      rolfdenver I recently up graded to the Lone Peak’s 4.5 and tried them out on a 20 mile hike in the Santa Rosa Mountains. They seem to be more durable and reliable than the 4.0’s.
      I love my Z-Paks arc blast but have recently gone to the Zpacks Nero frameless pack. (Always tinkering with lowering my base weight). I put all of my stuff that I would normally carry on the PCT in the pack and it all fit including the Bear Vault 450. I also took it on the 20 mile hike and it was very comfortable even without the hip belt. Bear in mind I have my base weight down to less than 10 pounds.

    Love this video. I’m thinking of hiking from Kennedy but only have a few days. Wondering how the elevation gains feel, especially the 3,000 in one day. Strenuous?

      Rachel...the thing I liked about hiking from KM to the Sierra was that the climb was very gradual. Made all the difference in the world! Good luck on your hike!

    With the different wildlife you've been showing over the first 10 videos, I'm amazed you've either never encountered a rattlesnake on the trail, or just didn't include it in the footage.
    Also, more for curiosity sakes and for my own education, should I attempt something like this down the road, why did you not summit Mt. Whitney? I've looked down at a couple of questions and noticed that you got off the trail here, so that might be the answer.

    • @TheHikingRev
      @TheHikingRev  3 роки тому +1

      I never saw a rattlesnake until I got to Beldon. I saw another one right out of Stehekin.
      I think you ought to consider your overall health and preparation before attempting a Thruhike. Notice, I didn’t say, “age.” Age is just a number. It was one of the hardest things I had ever done in my entire life. (Physically, yes. But mainly mentally and emotionally. )
      I didn’t summit Whitney because it wasn’t on the PCT.
      I got off Trail here because of a shoulder injury. (6 weeks of rehab). I started back in 2020 at the same place and at the same time as last year and finished on September 28.

      @@TheHikingRev I get the good health and good shape thing. Age is just how many times you've circled the sun.
      I know for a fact that even though I'd wanted since I was a teenager to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, it's just not in the cards, however, other kinds of hikes are, like the John Muir Trail, or the Tahoe Rim Trail.
      My original goal for next year is probably the Rae Lakes loop starting out of Kings Canyon.

    3 other questions if I may: 1. Did you cold soak Knorr sides? 2. Did you wear contact lenses at all? 3. How was it “socially” for an older male hiker - I get the feeling there are lots of bands of 20-somethings and I’d fit in with them about as well as with my teenage sons. :-) I’m an introvert by nature but still enjoy company of others.

    • @TheHikingRev

      rolfdenver Great questions!
      1. From the section Tehachapi to Walker pass (5 days) I could not cook because of all the mosquitoes and bugs outside my tent when I camped for the night. So I asked myself “why am I carrying this stove and gas canister when I’m not using it?” I researched “cold soaking” on the Internet and have been doing it ever since. I put my Knor rice side in a peanut butter jar with water and let it soak while I’m hiking to camp. As soon as I get to camp and set up my tent my food is ready to be eaten immediately. No waiting for boiling water and cooling down to eat. For coffee I just put two packets of Starbucks Via in a 750 ml Smart Water bottle, shake it up and it’s ready to drink immediately.
      2. I tried contact lenses on the trail and it was too much. (Solution, lens case, etc.) Plus, sometimes I would drop my lenses and couldn’t find them. I also did not relish the idea of putting a dirty finger in my eye. I don’t like glasses but they seem to be the best option on trail.
      3. I am introverted by nature as well and prefer to hike and camp by myself which I did about 90% of the time. The majority of hikers on the PCT were either 20 somethings or older retirees. When I did stop and spend time with the younger hikers I felt like they looked up to me as a father figure and in some cases, a grandfather figure. Many times I would out hike them (bigger miles, etc.) but I always felt that I was not as nimble as they were. It would take me longer to recover from a fall or sore muscles. But other than that, I got along well with the younger hikers.
      I know these answers were long and extensive but I hope that they will help. If you have any other questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

    I’ve watched many of your videos.
    I’m curious as to the timeline, did you do this thru hike this year or last? There is an 8 month lapse of vids between this one and the next.

      I started from the Mex border April 15, 2019 and got off Trail at Kearsarge Pass mid June due to a shoulder injury. I got back on Trail in 2020 at the same place and the same time that I got off the Trail in 2019. I finished the PCT on September 28, 2020.
      When I got back on Trail this year, my phone/camera broke after Glen Pass/Sawmill Pass and I did not pick up a new one until I got into S. Lake Tahoe. Therefore, I was not able to shoot any footage of my Hike from Sawmill Pass to Echo Lake. I am going to rehike that section next year, record footage and add it to my PCT playlist on UA-cam.
      “Now you know the rest of the story.” 🧐

    Great walking story! Two questions, was this in June when you went through Forester Pass? and did you find the 450 bear vault was large enough, or did you wish you had the 500? Thank you! I actually watched your last two videos first (after you posted on the 2021 still hiking) and am very much enjoying now going through them in order.

      Thanks Rikki. I put a 5 day resupply in my BV450 and it fit in there tight but it fit. The BV450 also fit great in my Zpacks Arc Blast. I could have put it on the outside but it fit ok inside my pack.
