i finally picked up a cheap amd gpu just to play with hyprland, I am glad I did. I am having such a blast with it. pywal + swww + waybar + kitty . . . and actual "rofi", runs just fine.
Glad to see Hyprland getting some DT love. I've been daily driving it on my Nvidia laptop for 2 1/2 years now, and it's really cool to see how far the project has come.
There is xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland package in Arch extras which is supposed to be more tightly integrated with Hyprland. wlroots portal will clearly work too, but for future compatibility I think it's safer to group Hyprland's family of tools as they develop further and possibly start differentiating from wlroots stuff in a breaking way.
hey DT you can use standard rofi because of the x11 compatability you don't need wofi, also theres a fork of rofi called rofi-wayland which uses your standard rofi config that i know you already have setup.
I've been daily driving Hyprland for the past 3 years on an old T440p. I've had an AMAZING experience. The only issue I had was OBS, like you said, but everything else works.
I'm using hyperland on a laptop and I like how we can be minimalistic AF. In my opinion screen space is precious and I don't want to waste it even with waybar. Wofi and the terminal is basically all I need.
Yes DT! I have followed you for years, its so good to finally see you make the move to hyprland. Take a look at the hypr plugins and hyprpanel too, its really nice and becoming a really nice ecosystem. Have fun!
You could use xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland instead of xdg-desktop-portal-wlr, according to the hyprland wiki it has more features and still compatible with other wayland compositors
The xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland portal should give you window sharing capabilities but I don't know about OBS since I don't use it. But its future seems dark since the developper (Vaxry) was kick out of the Freedesktop project ( (an umbrella project covering Xorg, Wayland, and many other core Linux Desktop projects) ...
I use the pre-configured April Lynn setup and decided that it was much easier for me to make a list of the programs that I needed + I didn't set up manually . I had to use keyd to enable accessibility, but other than that that's pretty simple and straightforward. I don't think I'll be going back to plasma anytime soon
Some things to know on hyprland: - Screen Zoom and popup terminals with the pyprland program. - much more configurable than sway - harder to learn than sway - best source for help is the great wiki and discord group - active development and many upgrades could break your config in small ways - config file is written in its own language called hyprlang, that is very powerful (see wiki)
I found this very helpful, thx. My first delve into hyperland had me wondering if I was doing things wrong - good to know I'm not the only one who had initial issues with the nvidia segments. I've yet to go back since the driver updates, because I'm pretty sure it didn't fix issues with the 1070? That and I got really invested in KDE
Considering all the other channels I follow have done hyprland videos, found it odd you hadn't. Tried it out 6 months ago and been my daily driver since. Interested to hear your opinion of it over the next few months
I have Nvidia but ran into a different problem I wanted to share: wayland itself is incompatible with cuda. So if you're doing GPU programming you cannot use hyprland
I loved using it, but before my first semester after summer break started i updated and it couldnt boot so i just moved to fedora for soemthing stable. Miss it a lot tho, amazing WM
As a ununtu user yeah having hyprland in the repos now is very nice and i went ahead and build the spurce update from vax's git and loaded a bunch of the other nwg apps to flesh out the system.
How do you make area screenshots in Hyprland? How do you split terminal windows and if you wish, put those splits in tabs? We are not talking about Tmux or spawning new windows. Just simple plain terminal. And in this terminal how do you make paddings, so that your text is not glued to top or left borders. There are many "How do you..." and how to set it to a workable condition. As for me I prefer borderless, titleless and buttonless (kill, minimize, maximize) DE. All is ruled by hotkeys. Like in "proper" tiling WMs. But this setup is done in pure minutes, works like a Swiss clock and is nice and minimal KDE 🐧
I tried Hyprland but I'm good on living in config files. Maybe this was just a moment in time but it seemed like every update would break the prior config file. Cosmic OS tiling just works and doesn't have any the issues I had with Hyprland.
Hyprland is incredibe. But it is still "not ready." idk if it is a wayland thing but so many things do not work out of the box like they would on X11. Discord screen sharing, OBS, Steam. With some tweaks (and time) I got them to work. The REAL deal breaker for me was when I fired up a VM on virtual box and tried to make it full screen. And it was just a black display. I went online and found no help. I switched back to xfce4.

I have been on awesome for some time, was on xmonad prior but even though I am a coder it required too much effort for me to understand Haskell to do things. I am not a lua guy either but lua is easy to roll with if you have coding experience. A couple of weeks ago I thought that I should see the current state of wm's under wayland as I was still on X11. Hyprland stuck out as a dynamic tiler. I used some scripts I found on the net to install on fedora and it worked perfectly on a raspberry pi which I used for a test, then my laptop and then my dual monitor desktop. I am liking it a lot, it is giving me the layouts that I want and only thing that required some help was to get discord working under wayland, which is not a hyprland issue. I will be sticking with it, it looks nice, is easy to configure and has moved me to wayland.

I would recommend replacing wofi with rofi-wayland. That way all of your existing rofi scripts should work. I also believe wofi is a dead project.
It's not
wofi so painful to use, if you don't use the exact case spelling you don't get the app, all rofi utilities missing
It's not dead actually.
