Back in the day....the 60s in fact....I was hitch hiking my way back from Cornwall & found myself at the Stonehenge....it was getting dark so I pitched up my tent right in the middle of it & spent the whole night alone there.

I remember as a kid visiting Stonehenge in the late 60's there was no visitors tunnel or parking, and you could walk amongst the stones and stand on the stones, they were just there.
If you had asked me 2 years ago I would have said that the people who built Stonehenge were unsophisticated compared with us. Now i would say that its we who are somewhat ignorant about being human.
I finally got to see it on my third trip to Europe in 2018... My first trip was 1983! Why did it take so long, I don't know but I was happy to finally see it. I don't understand how it all got there but it's amazing and I feel lucky to have seen it when I did. I still hope to come see it again someday but it's a crazy world so that may not happen. 🇺🇸 But, grateful to see the wonderful, and mysterious history of those giant stones in person 🤗
I visited stonehenge in 2019 and other sites in the area. There's so much more to discover. It does make you think of a community that were far cleverer than we give them credit for.
I grew up in a village 15 minutes drive from Stonehenge Avebury is a more attractive site and older than Stonehenge and sheep graze around the stones and you can wander around them. The admission fees to S/Henge are a rip off. You used to be able to drive past and park up at the side on the road and take photographs. Now that's all blocked off completely. The big problem was that visitors kept chipping off bits of it off and it had to be stopped otherwise the stones would have disappeared.
There is very little speculation as to what the people who built Stonehenge called it. You only need to consider the ancient living fossil that is the language of the Cymru. The Heel Stone or Heul stone as it's called in Welsh translates as Sun Stone. In medieval times the stones were referred to as the Giants Dance which actually resonates with the old ancient name. So, Cawr Gawr translates as Giants Dance. The soft mutated Gwar means Dawn and Aur means Hour or Time. Cor means circle, choir or college. Goreddu is to circle and Gorel means Aperture. Which takes us to the ancient name in the tongue of the Cymru as GOREL GWARE , translated as APERTURE of the DAWN and COLLEGE / CIRCLE of TIME. No mystery there then, does exactly what it says on tin.

I actually tried dowsing the ley lines that run directly through Stonehenge the first time I visited, when I was offered the opportunity to try by a dowser there! The thing that I find fascinating about this structure and many others world wide that are like this one around 5000 years ago and others in South America and maybe Egypt etc etc dated around 12000 years ago, is how did they manage to accomplish this. To place these stones so deep in to the earth and compact that earth so as they could withstand storms and stand exactly the same for thousands of years would be with modern lifting gear and so on a huge problem. I like the idea that Stonehenge was just someone's idea of a joke. Maybe they were pissed, having too much mead. Thousands of years later people still haven't got the joke yet. :P
Thing is, the bluestone arrived there possibly a thousand years before the sarsens, so unless the same idea crossed the millennium of people, it would have been a repurposing, possibly as an imposition of a new order. I believe that the religious adherence to farming will have been of significance, as would the broader societal ramifications thereof.
Personally, I rather like the idea of the stones being part of a complex celebrating life, woodhenge being built of impermanent material celebrating birth,the river symbolising the travails of life and then stonehenge commemorating passage to the next life, perhaps in a similar vein to maes however.
Why would you build Stonehenge as large as it is? Well, why do we build impressive town halls? Around Stonehenge it probably was the epicentre for England and so the biggest timepiece was built there (Assuming all the other standing stone circles in Britain have a similar function). Also, it would be like GMT and travellers from around Britain would be able to assess whether their own time recordings were accurate.

Not much of an explanation. These stone monuments, and there are many of them, are massive undertakings. And yet, there are no other significant stone constructions from that era. To talk about it as a social thing, a gathering place for mundane purposes is preposterous. It is correct to say we may never know. There are no records of what was going on at the time to explain how they lived.

Never believed it was just a calendar. The people who built it knew what day it was long before building it and after abandoning it. I'm not one of those ancient aliens/Atlantis types, I just believe a construction of this scale had a bit more behind it than recording and predicting seasons, they must have known all these things already in order to design and align it properly. Recorded history tells us the most fascinating and exciting tales ever told...the periods without record give us some of the greatest mysteries.

Anyone can count to 365, or put some sticks in the ground to mark the sun's progress, but inevitably, there would be disagreements about who got it right. Ordering and synchronizing an entire society with the definitive calendar that all that counting can be set by would make it worth building, and if a massive festival round an enormous stone circle orders and structure's society, helping unify people, bring stability, commerce and peace among them, and helping them to agree on when is when, then things would naturally become focussed around such a valuable community asset. Now factor in the steady progression of these henges south. It's clear that an entire way of life spread with the use of these celestial chronometers. The megaliths themselves speak to the heights this culture reached. It doesn't need all that much explaining. There's no need for a mystic narrative, though I'm sure there were such narratives. There's enough reason in it for all the rest to naturally follow. All of it, the druidic priesthoods and funeral rites. The feasting pits and marriage ceremonies. The processions and sacred enclosures. All just because their society had grown and flourished around these henges, and caused the synchronization of their lives.
You try to lift a quarter of a ton between 4 people or make a rope capable of dragging those stones from Wales. The rope would be to large to grip and too heavy. The same with the pyramids. No answer by modern standards.

I can remember as a kid, in the mid nineteen fifties, visiting stone henge. It was just a pile of rather large stones in the middle of a field, I climbed over the barbed wire fence to have a look at it. ..one of my late elder brothers when serving national service used to tell the story that a full sized model horse, that the officers used to practice sword drill on ( I know it takes a lot of believing ), was stolen and left on top of one of the stones. I do hope someone has a photo of this..

It is not a secret that Stonehenge has had restoration work and why not if it stops it falling into a complete ruin.
Although they did a nice "restoration job" i consider the work criminal and a huge act of vandalism on our history which can never be replaced.

My teacher i recall in 1980 told me it was a calander , monthly,seasonal etc,they explained it to me 40+yrs ago, so that's what i thought it was lol

What I want to know is, why did they build it so near to the A303?

Watched a Pathe newsreel film of Stonehenge been rebuilt and repositioned in 1901 and 1914 , and in 1954 when the site was cleared and the whole think rebuild using cranes and redimix concrete , so in truth I am four years older than Stonehenge 😱
I wondered if they may have been a foundation for a fortress?
Or, maybe that's all that's left above ground after cataclysmic events over time. Maybe if they did a dig in the next field there may be a clue?
I actually tried dowsing the ley lines that run directly through Stonehenge the first time I visited, when I was offered the opportunity to try by a dowser there! I was amazed how consistent my efforts were! I went on to dowse ley lines in Welsh stone circles and also at Carnac in France and proved to myself that they are real....weird but real! Pretty amazing!,

The thing that I find fascinating about this structure and many others world wide that are like this one around 5000 years ago and others in South America and maybe Egypt etc etc dated around 12000 years ago, is how did they manage to accomplish this. To place these stones so deep in to the earth and compact that earth so as they could withstand storms and stand exactly the same for thousands of years would be with modern lifting gear and so on a huge problem. Then we have the magnetic stones all over Britain that are lined up for hundreds of miles, I think they are called lay lines or something. They too stand to this day. Very interesting indeed.
Yeah in Egypt we have pyramids built to such exacting tolerances that we couldn't do it today. Not to mention cutting perfect granite boxes and blocks of many tons, then moving those many miles. They also tell us that the dynastic Egyptians built the pyramids, whilst also telling us they were a Bronze Age culture. Bronze tools cannot cut and smooth solid granite. Just for once it is good to say that we do not know, instead of saying God did it or something simply because we still don't understand. The posibillities are limitless. I personally do not believe in God, I am Atheist, and this is why I have this position. I am open to theories, but will not believe until the theory is proven. I would like to say that Alien life form also has never been proven, but purely from a pragmatic view. We are here, so the possibility that other life forms are is plausible.
The Secretary of State for Transport wants to make a new decision on the Stonehenge road scheme. He asked National Highways for responses to five matters he wishes to consider i.e. Alternatives, Policy, Carbon, Environmental Information and Any Other Matters.
National Highways has responded, and the Secretary of State for Transport has now invited comments on these submissions and any other relevant information.
Comments must be submitted by midnight on 4 April 2022.
The submissions by National Highways are technical and lengthy. The Stonehenge Alliance and its expert advisers are preparing a full technical response which we will share in due course.
However, it is important that the Secretary of State for Transport hears from the wider public on these issues. We’re therefore asking as many people to respond as possible, raising some or all of the points below.
If you can, please make the points in your own words and add any other points you might wish to make.
National Highways has not:
made any changes to the Scheme to take the 2021 World Heritage Committee Decision into account;
acknowledged that the Secretary of State found the Scheme’s impact on the proposed western cutting area would be “significantly adverse”;
fully assessed alternative routes less damaging to the World Heritage Site e.g., a southern bypass route would be cheaper even if there might be some problems with it, while a longer tunnel would reduce impact on the World Heritage Site;
explored alternatives to hard engineering solutions in the context of safeguarding and enhancing the World Heritage Site - e.g. a package of measures to reduce road traffic, road emissions and improve access to the South West;
updated the scheme construction costs; nor
updated the carbon assessment and costs.
Other changes since the Examination closed:
concern for climate change has increased with the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report and the need to take urgent action to reduce emissions, not increase them as any new Stonehenge road scheme would; and
the Environment Act 2021 sets new ambitions around nature recovery.

However, the portal was closed when Jones was forced to destroy the crystal key.
Before Stonehenge, of course, there was Strawhenge and Woodhenge, but a Big Bad Wolf came and blew them down....

I like the idea that Stonehenge was just someone's idea of a joke. Maybe they were pissed, having too much mead. Thousands of years later people still haven't got the joke yet. :P
Thing is, the bluestone arrived there possibly a thousand years before the sarsens, so unless the same idea crossed the millennium of people, it would have been a repurposing, possibly as an imposition of a new order. I believe that the religious adherence to farming will have been of significance, as would the broader societal ramifications thereof.
Personally, I rather like the idea of the stones being part of a complex celebrating life, woodhenge being built of impermanent material celebrating birth,the river symbolising the travails of life and then stonehenge commemorating passage to the next life, perhaps in a similar vein to maes however.

Why would you build Stonehenge as large as it is? Well, why do we build impressive town halls? Around Stonehenge it probably was the epicentre for England and so the biggest timepiece was built there (Assuming all the other standing stone circles in Britain have a similar function). Also, it would be like GMT and travellers from around Britain would be able to assess whether their own time recordings were accurate.

Not much of an explanation. These stone monuments, and there are many of them, are massive undertakings. And yet, there are no other significant stone constructions from that era. To talk about it as a social thing, a gathering place for mundane purposes is preposterous. It is correct to say we may never know. There are no records of what was going on at the time to explain how they lived.

Never believed it was just a calendar. The people who built it knew what day it was long before building it and after abandoning it.
I'm not one of those ancient aliens/Atlantis types, I just believe a construction of this scale had a bit more behind it than recording and predicting seasons, they must have known all these things already in order to design and align it properly.
Recorded history tells us the most fascinating and exciting tales ever told...the periods without record give us some of the greatest mysteries.

Doesn’t make sense to drag such massive stones from miles away into a circle just to make a calendar when they could of built something much smaller and it would of done the same job plus they wouldn’t bury people in a Calendar would they ? I don’t think they were much different from us other than having different customs tied to their everyday living like people today gathering in a circle or semi circle to watch a concert or football match or attend a marriage or funeral ,Stonehenge also has an inner and outer circle which suggests an audience watching the inner circle doing some sort of ritual is Stonehenge a place of gathering for worship,funerals ,marriage’s,entertainment ,a marketplace and judgments ?

Anyone can count to 365, or put some sticks in the ground to mark the sun's progress, but inevitably, there would be disagreements about who got it right. Ordering and synchronizing an entire society with the definitive calendar that all that counting can be set by would make it worth building, and if a massive festival round an enormous stone circle orders and structure's society, helping unify people, bring stability, commerce and peace among them, and helping them to agree on when is when, then things would naturally become focussed around such a valuable community asset.
Now factor in the steady progression of these henges south. It's clear that an entire way of life spread with the use of these celestial chronometers. The megaliths themselves speak to the heights this culture reached. It doesn't need all that much explaining. There's no need for a mystic narrative, though I'm sure there were such narratives. There's enough reason in it for all the rest to naturally follow. All of it, the druidic priesthoods and funeral rites. The feasting pits and marriage ceremonies. The processions and sacred enclosures. All just because their society had grown and flourished around these henges, and caused the synchronization of their lives.
Whatever it is or it’s purpose is to make sure it passes time unchanged ,not like our modern history which is rewritten all the time 💁♂️

You try to lift a quarter of a ton between 4 people or make a rope capable of dragging those stones from Wales. The rope would be to large to grip and too heavy. The same with the pyramids. No answer by modern standards.

Apparently stonehenge was originally from Wales. Seems strange but. That's what experts say. Krista shame it never stayed there.(perhaps we should see if Wales would like it back) if not we should move it to the N.E.C. for more visitors to see it of they want to. Yes I've been caught in many traffic jams trying to get past it and no I do not like it is just like many others.
I can remember as a kid, in the mid nineteen fifties, visiting stone henge. It was just a pile of rather large stones in the middle of a field, I climbed over the barbed wire fence to have a look at it. ..one of my late elder brothers when serving national service used to tell the story that a full sized model horse, that the officers used to practice sword drill on ( I know it takes a lot of believing ), was stolen and left on top of one of the stones. I do hope someone has a photo of this..
