For whatever reason, the BBC either couldn't or wouldn't use the original tune. So they commissioned a piece that's as close as possible, yet just about different enough to avoid copyright infringement. So, really, it is sort of the original tune with notes swapped around. It sounds horrible, though.
never seen this version, thank god!!! the original & best was on itv with bob holness, apparently this sorry version lasted less than a year.sky 1's version with lisa tarbuck was a little better.
@97channel I know it is what I was referring to is the fact that Freeview aer constantly changing it's channels all the time so channels aren't always available on Freeview I mean look at Sky Sports news for eexample there was a time when thatwas availanle on Freeview channel 82 if I recall now it's gone. Besides it dosen't bother me any moer as I've switched over to Sky now
Like Morcambe and Wise, "I'm playing all the right notes, just not necessarily in the right order".
@sjsharp2007 Challenge is now on Freeview, channel 46.
Aidan:
Both were good, but I'd give the edge to the second one. I loved the hexagons flying through the city; great animation for its time.
The sky version was a kind of dancier version of the original ITV version. My cousin used to present it on Sky One.
@bannerdb i didn't know Liza Tarbuck was your cousin
It was great fun, but I wish I'd been on the BobHolness version. That looked more jolly.

@ZooRoo999 me too I lovedwatching it growing up
I prefer Holness's opening titles, but these are very cool too.
I used to watch it. I _think_ it was a remake of the original, but I'm not 100% sure.
Blockbusters WAS Bob Holness, sorry.
@vegunited06
There's a very good reason for that.
Sorry - I have no idea!
IT'S EARDRUM BUSTERS!
I always thought this was the same theme just with many notes swapped around but I guess not.
Do you remember if you chose Claire as your Partner before the start of the Show?
Hiya, we were friends studying together at University, and Claire suggested we apply as a team
really strange why they don't use the original theme...
The muisc still belongs to Mr Welch
Someone requested it...
