Kyokushin Karate vs Muay Thai 1964

  • In Lumpinee Stadium in 1964 there were three bouts between Kyokushin fighters and Muay Thai fighters. All three ended in Knock-out, the score 2-1 in favour of the Japanese fighters.
    Interestingly you can see the Japanese fighters find a lot of success using Judo throwing techniques, in addition to their striking. Crosstraining Judo and Karate was not unusual during this time.
    The first fight in this video is between Akio Fujihira and Huafai Lukcontai.
    The second fight in this video, which was chronologically the last of the three in real life, is between Rawee Dechachai and Kenji Kurosaki.
    I could sadly not find footage of the missing third fight of this historic event. Please let me know if you find footage of this missing fight.
    This footage is not mine. I've just clipped the footage to make it easier to watch and analyze this historic event. I'm also trusting Wikipedia and the uploaders of the videos to have accurate information and facts, but without more trustworthy sources there is a chance names and dates in this video can be wrong.

    It's interesting to see the aproach of kyokushin fighters back in the day. The judo techniques aparently were a big part of their fighting plan, and aparently it was pretty effective

    Long time ago, my Judo teacher was training in Japan at that time. He told me that when Thai boxers showed up in Japan, non of Karate player could stood up to them, only a Judo practitioner was able to throw the Thai boxer down and place a hold on him. That iwas probably what got the Japanese challengers to train in Judo for their Thai boxing challenge. Also, modern Thai Boxers have good throwing techniques now. Nothing wrong with inter exchange of knowledge, this is how things grow.

      When I was growing up in Korea in the 1960s I remember the Japanese kids (few of us were full blooded as most of us were the kids of U.S. servicemen) often learned Judo before they learned Karate as Judo was still considered very Japanese. In those days, the shuto was considered a "Judo chop", and it also had punches and kicks. There was no notion of "cross training"; it was just considered common sense that the more different things you knew the better you could be. I remember most of the Korean TKD guys would jump at the chance to learn western boxing if the opportunity arose.

    I recall sparring with kickboxers back in the 80’s. My mid level Judo abilities were so superior to kickboxing that I wrote it off as an ineffective system for decades. It was ridiculously easy to clinch, throw them and then submit them on the ground that I actually believed kickboxing was pathetic. That said Muay Thai is a bit different, but it wasn’t around much back then in Australia. This was of course a mistake to dismiss kickboxing, as it would have been better to have both skills, but we didn’t know this back then.

      Yes and now Andrew Tate believes that only boxing makes sense. Anyway in friendly sparring it takes a cold hearted person to just kick someone in the head with all their might whereas in grappling you have to go 100% to take someone down unless they are 100 pounds lighter. So what tends to happen is the striker throws tip-tap strikes not wanting to hurt the other guy and eventually the distance is closed.

    顔面あり、グローブ使用だと、打撃技はムエタイのほうが数段上。 日本人選手は投げ技しか使えない。
    仕方ないですね、このルールだと。 しかし、それを承知でムエタイに挑んだ極真会の人達の勇気と求道心は素晴らしいと思います。

    The Kyokushin guy whooped the Muay Thai fighters @ss in the first fight, he confused him with the takedowns then was able to knock him out. If this was the old school UFC NHB rules the Karate guys would have won both fights due to knowing how to grapple and the fact that they wouldn't be stood up.

    Kyokushin has throws in it because Mas Oyama (its founder ) has a black belt in judo . Kyokushin is Goju Ryu mixed with judo minus head punches

    • @horreheitedet4320
      @horreheitedet4320  4 місяці тому

      Interesting, I would assume that it came from mostly cross polination, as the people interested in Karate would often also be interested in Judo, for example Police officers. I see several karate websites claim that Oyama had fourth dan in Judo, but the wikipedia article does not mention him training Judo.

    • @ronki23
      @ronki23 4 місяці тому

      @@horreheitedet4320 it's also in the name. Go-Ju Ryu means hard-soft style in Japanese: the 'Ju' is also in Ju-do. So Kyokushin is basically 'Go' without the 'Ju' if we are being extremely simplistic; I don't do Kyokushin but I used to do judo and Goshin Ryu Ju Jitsu and as far as I know a lot of Kyokushin clubs don't bother teaching the judo aspect of it as many associations / organisations don't allow throws and sweeps. Clearly the original Kyokushin has the 'Ju' element in it: maybe a mix of Goju Ryu and Judo.

      The art of eight limbs doesn't include wrestling or judo. Hip throws or leg takedowns are not used in that sport . The stand-up clinch is for knees and elbows and some throws but judo techniques are not allowed in muay thai even in modern day.
      This was like asking a boxer with no grappling exp to compete in a jujitsu match .

    Kyokushin Karate did not include Judo. The Kyokushin Karate Japanese studied Judo for the match- without notifying the Muay Thai fighters that Judo techniques were allowed. The Muay Thai fighters were unprepared. Just as in the first Kyokyushin World Championship in 1973. Japanese Kyokushin Karate fighters practiced low kicks to destroy the legs of the American and European fighters. Finally in the Second Kyokushin Karate World Championship, Willy Williams was cheated out of the Championship because Mas Oyama wanted a Japanese to win. I studied Kyokushin and the Japanese Kyokushin changed the rules for the Japanese Kyokushin to win. I do not wish to give my name because I have friends in Kyokushin- two or three who studied with me in the early 1970s. One Japanese instructor told my friend,s who fought in Japanese Kyokushin World Tournaments in the 1970s and 1980s, that it was better to lose by disqualification than to lose a match to another Kyokushin fighter. In other words, break the man's knee or jaw. I found this to be repulsive and left. Cripple someone because you were going to lose a match. Incidentally, Nakamura, Oyama, etc. did not want their karate students to study judo.
