I see Brendon is the nephew of Air Commodore Alan Christopher “Al” Deere, DSO, OBE, DFC & Bar. He certainly looks like him. It looks a terrific restoration of a Mark 9.

I think the Curtis P-40 was the consummate WWII fighter, but damn that Spit is beautiful.

---and that's, the most important attribute----it distracted the enemy pilots, see. making 'em forget, that it was deadly.

Looks like the Avenger was having a BAD oil Leak, by looking at the bottom of the aircraft.

Those old warbirds leak oil like nobody's business - even when sitting on the ground. Those drip trays are present for a reason ;)

The Mark IX was a stop-gap upgrade of the Mark V after the appearance of the Focke-Wulf 190A. The new German aircraft was a game changer and the Mark V Spitfire, which could hold its own with the then current model of the BF-109, was suddenly badly outclassed. In his autobiography, "Nine Lives", Brendon Deere's uncle, Alan Deere, recounted his wing's first engagement with the FW-190. The wing lost eight Spitfires for two 190s claimed, one by Deere.
The Mark VIII Spitfire was under production, but, because of a multitude of design changes, was taking too long to come online and Fighter Command badly needed something to counter the FW-190. The answer was fitting the Merlin 60/70 series engine to the Mark V airframe. This restored parity with the 190 and the "stop-gap" Mark IX turned out to be so successful that it remained in service right to the end of the War. The Mark XVI was simply a Mark IX fitted with the Packard Merlin - all the other Marks from XII on were Griffon powered.
