The idea of the merger is to compete against byd and Tesla. Honda Nissan and Mitsubishi want to merge. They had a conference about the whole event on Honda Japan's UA-cam channel. They want to make a next gen fuel generation vehicles and be competitive in the new market
Nissan has a year left in business before this news came out. I feel Nissan has 0 say and Honda will take control. But the odd thing is... What in Nissan has value to Honda?
Or be ruined in the process. I own a Honda and a Nissan (Renault Laguna 2) and I gotta say, i've spent more money in repairs in those 7 months I own that nissan, than 13 years in my Honda civic. Lmao

Because when two companies merge, so do their operational practices. Duh. I bet you thought that Daimler/Chrysler merging would lead to german quality at Chrysler prices right?
Considering this is Honda merging with both Nissan and Mitsubishi, I think Honda is doing it to compete with Toyota. Toyota owns part of both Mazda and Subaru, so this i think is Honda's attempt to do something similar. Honestly, if Honda can fix them, go for it.
The whole thing is confusing because I know for a while Mitsubishi made more money on parts than selling cars some American cars had a lot of Mitsubishi parts
@@bigd9526 That's probably still the case and why they're being included. The issue is brands now stamp their branding on parts, so I'm sure Mitsubishi is still making OEM stuff.
Toyota DOES NOT own part of Mazda. They traded stock to start their assembly plant in the US. Mazda gave 5% to Toyota, and Toyota gave 2.4% to Mazda. One would say that 2.4% of Toyota is valued more than 5% of Toyota. So Mazda has more stock value in Toyota than Toyota has in Mazda. To correct your statement, you should say Mazda owns part of Toyota.
I had 97 Altima sold with 285k+ miles and ran perfectly had ice cold 🥶 AC. Also 09 g37 with 235k that got totaled when a truck backed into me. That car drove like butter 🧈. Now have a 2019 Armada with 74k miles no issues. I maintain all my cars very well and do all the repairs myself. Never had any engine or transmission problems in any Nissans I've owned. Only minor stupid stuff and maintenance 💪😎
I'm old enough to remember a time when we went shopping at Kmart because we couldn't afford to shop at Sears. They only sold brand name, expensive products. Probably all American made products back then.
@@slumy8195I have an Altima that just passed 250k miles and still going pretty smooth, I'm doing all the maintenance and upgrades on it to make it past 300K, that's my end goal and would be the best car I've had to date.
I was a struggling single mom & had to pay for a new transmission in a Sentra. It was for my college age son who was in another state, had a job & school - lived on 99 cent Jumbo Jacks & 99 cent 2 taco deal for months to pay off my credit card. I would NEVER buy a Nissan from the time after Renault bought them. So unreliable!
Do we even know that factually happened? It's clear the Japanese Govt. would monitor such a deal closely (for it's own fiscal reasons). But that doesn't mean or imply that Honda was pressured.
Prevent a merger with a foreign company. Foxconn (Taiwan) wanted to buy or another chinese automaker. They are also losing alot in chinese domestic market.
Test drove a lifted 2025 Nissan frontier pro-4x today with all-terrain tires. I’m sold! I have a 2007 frontier at 298K miles. I’m kind of a neglectful owner, but it keeps running for 18 years now.
@@ChattanoogaDave I do like the steering. It feels heavier but I’m ok with that for a truck. The only 2 things I don’t like are the cameras resolution and how low the back seats are. It should be a little higher.
I used to be a Subaru tech, some of them had Nissan rear ends. Nissan parts are incorporated into many brands. Hopefully, Nissan is scaled down and reinvented. The 1990 Pathfinder was good for 500k miles. They need to return to that level of quality
That's the old Nissan VG engine. 2000 Pathfinder/QX4 was the last one similar to 1990. Does this mean the 3.3L V6 in 2000 Pathfinder can last for 500K miles?

Had an 1980 Datsun Maxima station wagon diesel. One of best vehicles ever had 400k when it rusted away but still start right up. If you left the lights a sexy voice recording would play "Please turn off the lights" 😂
Yep!!! My neighbor, and best friend drove his Mom's New Maxima, and I was 1 year younger with no Driver's license yet! He would drive us around, and would make 30 or 40 stops at stores, friends houses, teenagers hangout places, parties, etc!!!😮😉😉 I would always be riding shotgun in the passenger seat!! Remember the Chimes dinging, and then the Female Voice!! Door is open!! Ding, door is open!! Key is in the ignition!! Ding!! Then it would do it over, and over until you shut the door!! He would stand there with the door open, and it would drive us crazy.!!!😮🙄🙄 She would NEVER shut up!! It ran on a continuous loop!!🙄🙄 I used to want to RIP the dashboard off, and shut it up!!! Annoying as $hit!!!! But, I'll give it to NISSAN, they Great vehicles back then, and ahead of everyone else at the time with a talking warning system!!😉😉 Wonder what happened to them!!????😳🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Honda was known for quality engines not quality transmissions. Recently they've had some bad engines as well. Them along with Toyota are overhyped for what they really are.
Over hyped haha! Toyata and Honda can go 5 years with bad engines and because of they history the majority will still choose Honda over the bull crap Nissan had for the last decade
@@JoseSanchez-qy1cw I got a 2016 Honda accord sport with 410k . Haven't had not one issue yet . Transmission and all still running good . A Nissan would never! 😂
ahhhh, I don't think Honda will turn over control to Nissan. If anything, I see this as a bigger company absorbing the small one, then doing away with same and controlling the assets.
It does not work like that, it will be more of like ford owned Mazda, Volvo, after they let them go or sold them, . BMW bought 4 Emglish brands kept Mini and sold Range , Jag and others.
Please folks, as we have had three Nissans in my family (now we have two), don’t believe Scotty Kilmer all the time! He hardly ever has anything good to say about any Nissan, but I know people who have them and love them. Both of our remaining Nissans are Altimas with CVT transmissions, neither of the 3 have broke down on us. The one that we used to have with the least mileage when we got rid of, it was at 126,000 miles. It was wrecked. We still have the other two Altima’s. One of them has over 220,000 miles (2009) and still going strong. The other one has 193,000 miles (2014) and is still going strong. Hondas aren’t as good as they used to be. I would grab a Nissan or I would get a Honda these days. I see them as equal in quality. I’ve not had a Honda, but I would take one, but they are still not as good as they used to be. I love my Nissans. I have one Altima right now (2014). Almost 200,000 miles of trouble free mileage. My daughter has one with over 220,000 miles on it and it is a 2009 only needing some new coils replaced, not all at once (about $50 or $60 a piece at the parts store). I replaced the last one myself, easy fix.
I've never had a low opinion of Nissan vehicles. A housemate in the 80's had one of their mini pickups and it was a champ. My older brother had a Nissan Maxima as well as an Infiniti G35 and they were both good vehicles. So, is Nissan really known for bad reliability?
@wordsofjames True, but I've also not seen any YT videos lambasting Nissan reliability. On the other hand, that might just be because Nissan/Infinity doesn't sell a lot of vehicles in the States. But to keep things in perspective, my perception is that ALL Japanese brands of cars are more reliable than anything coming out of Europe, China, Korea or America.
I'm not sure of the reason for your antipathy for Nissan. I have owned Altimas, Maximas, and Pathfinders and experienced no issues whatsoever. I have friends and relatives who have Nissan without issue. Does the US get second rate Nissans? Nissans are everywhere around here. Maybe it's a US thing.
The new ones have a reputation for being garbage, but I had a 1994 nissan altima I bought for 500 bucks and drove it for 3 years before it became a rusted out death trap. Still started right up, drove it to the junk yard.
Scotty, I have watched many of your videos and think of your advice and opinions as solid gold. I know Nissan have taken some bad turns in recent years. But I must speak in their defence. I had a 1998 4 door ER34 Skyline with a RB25 DE Neo non turbo engine. I owned it for 20 years, didn't look after it all that well and it never once let me down. I sold it recently because I just got tired of scumbags trying to steal it. I can only speak on the skyline, but it was easily one of the best cars I've ever had. The engine was bullet proof. Truly a car that couldn't be killed.
Maybe this will be an improvement in Nissan vehicles ... not the fall of Honda. Keep what really works from both companies and get rid of what doesn't.
It all depends on management. If the poor management at Nissan is integrated into Honda's leadership and starts taking over making the same poor decisions then you'll see Honda falter. This is what happened to Boeing after they merged with McDonnell Douglas. The bean counters from McDonnell Douglas beat out the engineers and now the company is in turmoil.
Seven years? More like 17 years, my grandma 2007 Nissan Sentra CVT failed at 90k miles. She refused to take it back, she sold it immediately after they repaired for free. Got a Camry, it has 180k miles today and still running like new!
Had a problem with the brakes on a Prius. Took it to a local dealer (only dealers can work on them per a local independent mechanic) and they didn't fix the problem after $1,000. Took it to Longo Toyota and they fixed it first time. $2,500. But after a couple months it (the brake pump) started leaking. Took it back and they replaced it free of charge with a new unit. Worked fine ever since. Also bought my 08 Tundra from Longo and after about 165K the dash lit up like a christmas tree. I happen to be working in the LA area so I took it to Longo and they fixed it in one day. There's some fuel injection pumps for smog that were warranteed for 150K miles (I didn't know about it) so it cost me around $2K. Pricy but it was fixed right the first time. I do most my own work (radiators, water pumps, shocks, etc.) but some things I need to take to a mechanic. I appreciate Longo fixing it right and standing behind their work. Hey, if a dealer gives good service (and many don't) I will give them a plug.
I have 2019 altima from new 100 miles now 35 ,000 and a 2010 sentra 135, 500 ...everyone say this and that no problems with both cars... did trans fuild change on altima, never did it on sentra...most reliable cars just drive it like a Nissan and not like a corvette.
The toyota dealership definitely used the cheap cat on his truck because that was the only part the insurance company would pay for. On top of paying a fraction of the labor required to do the job. So its a gigantic cluster by the dealerships/insurance companies doing piss poor work just to get the vehicle by before the warranty period is up.
I am very sad to see Honda getting messed up in this mess. I own Honda’s. But, at my age, these two CR-Vs are my last. When have you seen auto manufacturers merger go well? Never. Yeah, Eddie Lampert ruined K-Mart and Sears on purpose. You’re right it was about real estate. I believe this will happen to McDs someday.
Main reason I think Japan pushed for this merger is they don't want Foxconn/Taiwan to take over Nissan from Renault. Foxconn did put on hold their bid after awhile. Maybe Honda would transform Nissan into a more reliable automaker and also make Mitsubishi more popular. Platform sharing I hope won't weaken the 3 brands. The pride of the engineering team at Nissan I think would have to calm down when Honda starts restructuring and sharing ideas.
I personally think the Frontier is a good truck and I hope Nissan keeps a manual transmission in the Versa or another car. Stop it with the CVTs. Even if they become Honda CVTs.
Hope they do something better with the CA, SR, VG, RB, and maybe KA engines. So much potential in decent designs, especially with the dual overhead cams.
I have a 2016 Nissan frontier 181000 runs perfect no trouble with it whatsoever he's referring to the newer ones Honda sucks now too they all went away from the regular transmissions and they went to little bitty turbo engines that won't hold up either
FYI..post world war 2: In Japan, companies often own small stakes in their competitors through a system called "keiretsu," where businesses within a group cross-hold shares, creating a network of interconnected companies that can sometimes appear to lessen competition within an industry; essentially, companies have interests in their competitors, although the holdings are usually small and meant to foster cooperation and stability rather than outright control. Japan once had six major keiretsu-Mitsui, Mitsubishi, Sumitomo, Fuyo, Sanwa, and Dai-Ichi Kangyō Bank (DKB) Group-known as the “Big Six.” They developed in the second half of the 20th century from different historical origins. A keiretsu is a conglomeration of companies across various sectors, including banks and trading companies. Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Sumitomo, Fuyo, DKB Group, and Sanwa are the six major keiretsu. Nissan Motor is a member of the Fuyo Keiretsu, and Toshiba is a member of the Mitsui Keiretsu.
No skin to me as I only buy older domestic vehicles from individuals in my area, V-8s that is. Haven't visited a dealer lot of any kind since 2002 when I bought my very last new vehicle.
Same I've never had a car payment and always paid cash for all my cars. Never had any issues with them and ran all of them over 230k+ miles without any problems beside minor stuff and maintenance. It helps that I maintain and fix all my cars myself so I save a ton of money 💰💪😎
Honda buying Nissan and Mitsubishi actually makes sense. Look at all the non car related things that those two are in that honda wants a slice of. Nissan and Mitsubishi have many other industries outside of vehicles but to get a foot in the door maybe this is how honda has to do it.
Family has always and still own Honda's and never a problem, whereas my wife owned a Nissan Rogue that gave us various problems. Needless to say our future purchase might not be a new Honda for the very first time?
I thought that all tires had to go through rigid testing before earning the 'mountain peak and snowflake' designation indicating they are suitable for Winter driving. Maybe that's just a Canadian/Northern US requirement?
PROTECT SCOTTY at ALL costs! LOL! You videos make me laugh sir :D You are a genuine man with a skill that is shared to the world, and I thank you! Happy New Year Sir
For many EVs, they have a battery conditioning function to essentially bring the battery to a safer temperature range by the time you are ready to use it, since it will damage the battery if you put a heavy load on it while it is extremely cold, and users likely won't want their car accelerating like a pedal bicycle for the first few minutes if their morning drive. Beyond that, the colder temperature can often lead to the voltage which will also reduce the effective capacity, since the conditioning does not bring it to the ideal range, instead it just brings it to the edge of a safe range. If it is 5f outside, it may bring the battery to 32f, thus allowing the car to offer its advertised performance, and not damage the battery.
The Maximas were awesome, Nissans used to be right up there with Toyota, but the quality diminished for some reason, then came the CVT transmissions....
I had a 1993 Sentra SE-R with a manual transmission. Absolute blast to drive and it was indestructible. Beat the tar out of it for 12 years with no problems. Unfortunately I wouldn't touch either one of these brands now.
8:00 - i dont believe insurance companies are obligated to fix the car after vandalism by installing a part that is directly from Toyota or otherwise dealer-certified. Not sure about US, but in Canada, the obligation of the insurance company in an auto vandalism claim ends when they bring the car to the previous condition it was before the act of vandalism, i.e., they can install comparable or second market parts, such as catconverters; they are under no obligation to install brand-new or manufacturer-certified parts, which is unfortunate, and i do recognize this may piss off a lot of owners.
The government of Japan won't allow a manufacturer to go bankrupt. A company will be found to merge with the struggling company. That's why Renault invested into Datsun/Nissan the last time.
from the year of the 90's up to the year of 2024 all the cars that i own are Nissan started from 300zx, Quest, Frontier, Altima my 2000 Nissan frontier still with me until now with 194,258 miles it's not a CVT transmission, it's timing belt i started to realize that CVT became the failure for nissan when i got the Altima. nissan was a dependable vehicle back in the 80's and 90's
I've had good luck with mine. 97 Altima sold with 285k+ miles to crackheads who drove it another 4-5 years then totaled it. 2009 Infiniti g37 with 235k miles that got totaled when dodge truck backed into me in parking lot. Both car ran perfectly smooth and never had any issues besides some minor stuff and maintenance. I now have a 2019 Armada with 74k miles and absolutely love it and never any issues besides stupid washer fluid sensor so I just unplugged it. This 5.6 v8 is a beast 💪. I do all my own repairs and maintenance so maybe people don't take care of their cars and that's why they fail.
Look what happened to Boeing after they “merged” with McDonnell Douglass. The crappy company’s management (McDonnell Douglas) were sneakier than the good company’s management (Boeing) and the bad company ended up on top. What do you think of Boeing nowadays? Honda should make sure that all of Nissan’s management is fired, laid off, or retired before they merge.

Both Nissan Skyline and Honda type R are excellent cars, now that's a great prospect.
Honda is a great company. I trust them. Hopefully they will be the ones calling the shots which means no change for Honda or Acura
@@bigd9526 That's probably still the case and why they're being included. The issue is brands now stamp their branding on parts, so I'm sure Mitsubishi is still making OEM stuff.
Nooooo Honda shines on its own
Toyota DOES NOT own part of Mazda.
I've owned two Nissan vehicles, a Sentra and a Frontier, both just as reliable as the Toyotas we've had.
I had 97 Altima sold with 285k+ miles and ran perfectly had ice cold 🥶 AC. Also 09 g37 with 235k that got totaled when a truck backed into me. That car drove like butter 🧈. With regards to Sears/Kmart, Eddie Lambert was just interested in the real estate and ran both retailers to the ground
He wanted the brands as well, craftsman, diehard etc...
Correct. It was a real estate deal - the transfer took place in Illinois - and it was not Fast Eddie’s intention to save either retailer

I question what role the Japanese government had in pressuring Honda to buy Nissan, before they went into bankruptcy.
Do we even know that factually happened? It's clear the Japanese Govt. would monitor such a deal closely (for it's own fiscal reasons). But that doesn't mean or imply that Honda was pressured.

I like my Frontier. I have owned 4 Toyotas. I’m keeping the Frontier.
I've never had a low opinion of Nissan vehicles. A housemate in the 80's had one of their mini pickups and it was a champ. My older brother had a Nissan Maxima as well as an Infiniti G35 and they were both good vehicles. So, is Nissan really known for bad reliability?
You can have good products and still easily go out of business.
Yes.
Your personal anecdotal experience doesn't represent the full picture of their issues.
You are the exception, not the rule.
No. Some of us go back to when Nissan was Datsun - and the trucks were tough and rock solid even back then.
Nissan does have potential. They've built good cars in the past and some current models aren't bad. Versas are reliable little cars.

I sold it recently because I just got tired of scumbags trying to steal it.
I can only speak on the skyline, but it was easily one of the best cars I've ever had.
The engine was bullet proof.

Maybe this will be an improvement in Nissan vehicles ... not the fall of Honda. Keep what really works from both companies and get rid of what doesn't.
Here's hoping!
It all depends on management. If the poor management at Nissan is integrated into Honda's leadership and starts taking over making the same poor decisions then you'll see Honda falter.
