I'm no longer a military medic but am still a paramedic in the civie world. It was a sacred amount of trust that soldiers put in the medics which justified a nickname like "Doc". I never took that for granted then and still don't.

They played this at Maxton "Doc" Soviak funeral today in Berlin Heights, Ohio today. (September 13, 2021). He was one of the 13 killed August 26, 2021 in Kabul Afghanistan at the abbey gate.
Tears were flowing. It was the perfect song.

We had heroes too, Doc. We called them Navy Corpsmen. Army called them Medics. Everybody called them, "Doc". We called them when we were hurt or dying, and they always came, unless they got lit up themselves on the way. On Charlie's hit list they were at the top with radiomen and officers. You guys were some of the bravest men I ever knew. And to all of you corpsmen and medics out there, "Thanks, Doc". Semper Fi. Sgt. Mike Moore FO. 5th Marines 2/1. I was a medic in VN. I didn't carry a weapon, due to my faith, but when I walked into my first platoon out in the woods, I was, for the first time in the Army, welcomed. When I came off the chopper I heard "Hey Cherry, where's your weapon?" and the reply from of E-5 Platoon Leader, "He's the Doc". Until that time, I'd been called a lot of names (coward being the most hurtful). I knew I would give my life for those guys because they would have done the same. We didn't fight for 'freedom' or any of those words. We fought for each other.

When you love your brothers, you will tell them lies, because hope is strong medicine. We couldn't let on that we were feeling inadequate to the task. Health care involves the whole of a person, psychology and physicality are not different things. The best medicine was often the sound of the Medivac Bird coming in. It can take a lot of work to stay alive, but hope somehow makes it possible.

I was an Army physician sent on multiple deployments over 30 years. I always tried to be sure that my medics were as highly trained as possible and often took whole sections from the 18-D training to get them even better. The results were amazing. Even more so was when the medics and the troops asked me to go out on patrol with them. I have had no greater honor and privilege. The level of love and commitment from these young people I have rarely seen before or since. Well done Docs.

One thing you'll never do that an Army Medic will do many times, take of a troop in the middle of a firefight, but don't ever think you're less than, because an Army Medic won't be on the side of the road with a mangled vehicle trying to save the people inside, both of you are courageous beyond the norm and will go much farther than others to help in the worst of conditions.
