  • Heike Monogatari follows the historical epic, known by the same name, as we witness the Heike clan in the years leading up to their demise. Guided by a girl named Biwa, we are inserted into the midst of one of Japan's most tumultuous periods, filled with grief, war, happiness, and fear... It is absolutely one of my favorite anime of 2021 already, and it stands out among the rest as one of the most beautiful anime I've seen to this day- despite only being 6 episodes in. Check it out!

I will climb up to a roof top and shout to the skies "Watch Heike Monogatari!". I'm so glad I was able to give it a chance as the art was so different than the other shows of this season and it completely paid off!

The Heike Story is phenomenal--- I think Naoko Yamada has created an incredibly original piece of animation, choosing to sideline many of the male characters and key players in the political conflict to focus on the female voices, especially since many of them are the ones that we know less about, and are actually the ones that survive the political conflict. To focus the story from Biwa (a ficitional character who does not seek to affect the political conflicts) and her point of view is so radical considering how revered this historical epic is. Instead, Yamada focuses on the feelings, emotions and relationships between the characters, but particularly their relationship with Biwa. So if they don't have a relationship with Biwa, they end up getting sidelined, which is so important, since it shows Yamada's deliberate choosing of how she is framing this story, similar to how historians have always erased the stories of those they deem to be less important, which is often that of marginalised people.

Its a shame that this show isn't get the attention that it deserves. Not only among community but also anitubers aren't talking about this show mostly because of the populatiry of the other shows. Same thing happened with Shouwa Genroku which is one the most beautiful shows that I have ever seen. Today these shows are really hard to find and I appreciate them. Hope same thing happen to this show like how OddTaxi got. Really liked your video I'm really grateful that are people who don't miss good shows like this and makes content about them.

I was stunned with a great buildup and a most powerful punch in the ending. The show is incredible. It is one of the rare 10/10 meaning and art wise, which can be viewed disregarding of year and its aging.
Such an incredible intrinsic view on the history, life meaning, art, nature and our legacy - the one we own to our elder generations. We would not be the ones we are as a nation, if not for those who lived before.
An incredible story of poetry and self analysis throughout the blank history, but via the reach lives of real inhabitants and persons. The whirlwind of ambitions, doubts, glorious moments and weaknesses - the ones which make people people.
I can't stress enough how much this show impacted me this year. And, much to my regret, how little people seem to get from it, if anything at all.
"The Buddha's temple bells toll the message..." - a reminder to us all

great analysis of this anime! it is truly one of the most beautiful, underrated gems of all time imo. totally totally agree with your comparison of heike's atmosphere to mushishi's!!!
would just like to add on something about biwa as a character: from what i've read about the heike monogatari (the original epic), is that before it was written, minstrels would perform the tale and it basically grew out of an oral tradition. these performers would perform using the, of course, biwa instrument.
biwa is basically the embodiment of all these minstrels who kept the heike's legacy alive in japan, and i think that is what makes her character as an insider looking in more significant! i'm no history expert of course, but this is just what i've managed to glean off of what little i've read so far.
again, so glad to have found a video essay on this series where there are so few on here!

    • @roadfox808
      @roadfox808 Рік тому +5

Your insight into Biwa is profound and correct.
I would also like to add that the character's biwa is probably based on "Yao Bikuni".
Yao Bikuni is an immortal nun in Japanese folklore.
Yao Bikuni is believed to have been born between 645 and 810 AD and lived approximately 800 years thereafter.
As the daughter of a fisherman, she ate the flesh of a mermaid, which was said to make her immortal if eaten. She became immortal(Precisely 1000 years of life span and a body that does not age.).
However, because of her immortality, she was predeceased by her family and experienced the bereavement of her loved ones one after another.
Grieving for her life in the sorrow of having no family, friends, or loved ones, she became a nun, took the name Yao Bikuni as her Buddhist name, and wandered all over Japan.
She became a nun and became a folklore throughout Japan, and one thing they all have in common is that she loved camellia flowers, especially the white camellia, which has become a symbol of Yao Bikuni.
In many traditions, she is described as having beautiful white skin and looking like a beautiful girl of about 16 years old.
The long-haired girl(Biwa in later times), who resembles a loquat recounting the Tale of the Heike as a minstrel, is painted very white, and white camellia flowers are frequently used for backgrounds and kimono patterns.
The similarities between Biwa and Yao Bikuni, who remains a young girl forever while the people around her are aging, are no coincidence.
I thought it was a genius script idea, sentimental and beautiful.

I really wish the best for Science Saru, especially with the newly-released The Heike Story. Shows like theirs are nowadays overshadowed by the more popular and long-running titles that fans so fervently anticipate. At least, that's how I feel. But I mean I'd very much like to keep this as our little secret too :DD let me know your thoughts, if you want!

This was Naoko Yamada's first anime since she left Kyoani, and the first since the fire. And its about a girl who comes to terms with losing her friends and loved ones. I don't want to assume, but I'd like to think of this as her coming to terms with what happened, and paying tribute to her friends, her family at kyoani who were lost to the tragedy.

Actually, the introduction of Biwa in this anime is quite rational. The tales of Heike is assumed to be written not by a single person, but rather a collection or journals written and woven by several authors, considering that any given character in the tales their touch is inconsistent through the story . Furthermore, it is, in reality, impossible for a single person not to miss every crucial moment that happened to the Heike clan. (Being on the ship with Mikado in Danno-ura, while joining another war in Gurikara-touge). But what if we experimentally assume that the tales were written by a single person? Who wrote the tales must be with future-foreseening-eyes.

I just tracked this anime and finished it, and despite some reviews being critical for murdering the book, I for one who haven't read the book had no problems with how it was presented in an 11 episode series (entire story is way too big to fit in 11 episodes)
Reading the book, and now I have more interest with all the characters left out, and additional detail that was missing in the anime, but still, my point of view for the anime did not change, rather thankful that I watched it.
It is a tragic story, but I will watch it again from time to time, to humble myself of the lessons that it teaches.
