Ronald Lee Ermey (Gunnery Sergeant Hartman) was a real life drill instructor for the USMC. A lot of his insults were ones he had actually used, and director Stanley Kubrick told Ermey that he 'wanted it real' at the start of filming. Ermey replied, 'I wouldn't give it to you any other way '.
The last comment always baffled me yet made me laugh because it sounded like a random Seargent Hartman insult that somehow made sense. I read in to it and he says "I will motivate you Private Pyle, if it short-dicks every cannibal in the Congo." Apparently this means that he will get Pyle to become marine fit and consequently lose weight, which will short-dick, or short-change (rip off) every cannibal in the Congo (a cannibal would feel ripped off after all if their prey had significantly less meat on it than it did before).
What made him so perfect for this role is the fact that he was an actual drill instructor in The Marines before becoming an actor. The role was supposed to go to someone else with Ermey being nothing but a technical advisor, but bc of his experience he put together an instructional video with some of the extras, after watching it the director ended up not only giving him the role, but he also gave him permission to write his own lines and even improvise.. the rest is history
I was in the young marine corp as a kid and that obstacle scared the shit outta me soon as the bus approach the camp that was The first thing you saw 😨
Puts me in tears from laughing so hard every time I watch this scene. Fortunately the Air Force boot camp in San Antonio was a lot more tame than this.
fkn love watching this bit, lee ermey is just fkn brilliant at swearing!!! it takes true feeling to talk like this! i do it my father does it too & so does lee ermey its must be a trait some of us our born with.
The late Ronald Lee Ermey perfected his insults as a real Marine DI and Staff Sergeant. Director Stanley Kubrick originally brought him on as a technical advisor, but decided to replace the actor with Ermey himself as no one could do it better.
Who here doesn't know that this is none other than Det. Bobby Goren aka Vincent D'Onofrio as Pyle? Made a helluva Thor in "Adventures in Babysitting" too.
hi i would like to say a high percentage of lee's lines was by lee and all the high stuff esp the obstacle was very real and high up i tryed it, and lee was my lunch partner and a real nice person too.stew fmj crew. RIP R Lee Ermey.
IPlayWithFire135 the Marines do this so that you are mentally and physically prepared to go into combat and it weeds out those who are not able to cope with life in the Corp or combat
"You climb obstacles like old people fuck." - One of the funniest lines I've ever heard in movie.
Each and every statement of Sergeant Hartman is remarkably funny.
and accurate.

Soooooo damn funny. That scene never gets old
One if the best scenes of the movie in my opinion!
Every time I see this part of it I can't stop laughing. Ronald Lee Ermey was second to none in throwing insults.
Bruh theeee hardest part of boot camp was not laughing hysterically at the comedic nature of my drill instructors
YES! So true...I had such a hard time not laughing. I am shocked I never got busted. Only got yelled at twice.
I couldn’t sneez n not get yelled at or ITed wasint as lucky as you bro lol sum how still graduated a squad leader

Thank you for that fine explanation.
Lmao.. never understood that quote for 30 years until now..
I never understood that quote but you explained it perfectly!

"I WILL motivate you private Pyle!!" Even after a clear failure, Hartman hasn't given up on Private Pyle.
I was in the young marine corp as a kid and that obstacle scared the shit outta me soon as the bus approach the camp that was The first thing you saw 😨
Reminds me of a gallows for some reason. It does look creepy.
PRIVATE PYLE!!!! WHATEVER YOU DO DONT FALL DOWN THAT WOULD BREAK MY FUCKING HEART!!!
It’s so funny because it’s so fucking mean
Puts me in tears from laughing so hard every time I watch this scene. Fortunately the Air Force boot camp in San Antonio was a lot more tame than this.

Best line in the movie.
That would break my fucking heart!

I don't think I'd be able to handle Hartman's broken heart if Pyle fell 😭😭
Spoiler: Private Pyle does not contaminate the world.
Don't fall down that would break my fucking heart lol great movie.
When acting turns to real hate and flashbacks.... love it
This is still funny to this day
He was definitely a national treasure.
Best scene in the whole damn movie!
I remember climbing this in air assault school; and just thinking of him up top yelling at me got me over it .
funny you mentioned that. I totally forgot about this scene when I was in Air Assault school.
Ft Campbell?
Always wondered why private Piles hands where discolored In this scene.
RIP R. LEE GUNNY
You climb obstacles like old people f%#k, do you know that Private Pyle?
Rest in Peace
the only dislike comes from private pile
Army and marines need drill instructors like this again. We were trained hard back then. Now they have to hug and kiss them!! Sad...
Holy fucking shit 😳 😆 🤣 😂 😹
0:37 is the best
WHAT IN THE FUCK ARE YOU WAITING FOR PRIVATE PYLE?? UP AND OVER!!!!!
Who here doesn't know that this is none other than Det. Bobby Goren aka Vincent D'Onofrio as Pyle? Made a helluva Thor in "Adventures in Babysitting" too.
I wonder if he made it maybe he could have saved 8 Ball and Doc Jay...
Count the F word against Scarface Wolf of Wall St and Goodfellas😀
great movie
i like how most of the comments are about how funny this is, yet all i think when i watch this is that Leonard gets the last, depressing, laugh.
In Pyle's defense, that thing is insanely high. No way I'd even attempt it.
hahaha!!! I love how hhe cant quite get over the damn obstacle yet he comes down fairly easily...either way still funny
62 fellow marines liked this video
WingsodRedemption in a nutshell.

How the hell did Pile pass the physical to get into the Core,to begin with?
It is not Pile, it's Pyle. It's not an apple core, it's The Marine Corp. Lastly its only a movie
MEPS didn't do their job and standards are lowered or outright ignored with a draft going on.
Did MEPS have the same standards during the Vietnam era draft? Serious question, as I have no idea.
@@ravenousfire7798 no. Lowered to throw as many bodies on the front lines.
When soldiers got drafted during that time I don't think they had a choice. It was different during that time
"You climb obstacles like old people fuck!"
OMG! I JUST CANT!!!!😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

1 person was gomer pile.
I wonder what would happen if Pyle threw Hartman off the obstacle, other than going to the brig?
Hartman would stomp the dog shit out of Pyle.
Pile or Pyle?
Get the f* down off of there!
Private Paula
Im in stiches
No, its just that it's funny, so repeat it.
Doesn't really make them a tool.
OMG.....lol
THEN QUIT!
Got damn. Why he so mean? Chill 😭
Hartman was trying to ready these guys for the horror of war psychologically as well as teaching them how to fight. Real life DIs are often like this.
omg why are they so mean in the army
IPlayWithFire135 the Marines do this so that you are mentally and physically prepared to go into combat and it weeds out those who are not able to cope with life in the Corp or combat
Its not the Fn Army
@@ljones121 Same thing
No its' not....
