The look on Ray's face says it all. Being able to reach out to a company like flat is awsome
Ray checks out, accepting a gift with the first words “fuck off” tells me he’s a full blown kiwi now stamp the passport he’s in.
I'm personally a fan of every part of the renovation... so please keep showing as much of as possible.
It's all about the BroScience.
No need to apologize! All of this is interesting. Walls coming down, demo, etc. I am invested in this for you and your wife, not for a "before and after" video. Keep up the good work!
Ray is 100% kiwi - response to great gift 'f**k off!' :)
The structural stuff is super interesting to me, but anyway I don't care what the job is as long as you're talking about it with your cheerful but down to earth attitude and with some added input from Ray and hopefully one day Paeru
Best wishes to your mate Paerau.
Hope he’s on the mend soon
Love how speechless Ray was haha
"F*#k off!" - Ray
I laughed so hard.
Proper builders reply from big Ray about the new nail gun. 😂👌
“A few moments later”, as Ray was using his new gun for the first time, had me anticipating the worst hahah!
I was thinking “surely he didn’t drop it from the ceiling 🙉” haha
I wonder if the "measuring with body parts" is a Dutch thing, because I do exactly the same things for rough guestimates of measurements as Ray :)
edit: oh and by the way, I think these episodes where you deal with load bearing stuff are very interesting and educational! so not boring at all.
my dad who is English and part Scottish did the same when he was an electrician - he now retired
I do the same thing, I know the joints in my fingers are about an inch, my arm spread apart finger tip to finger tip is 6' and my foot is about a foot. I am Canadian born Mennonite, and yes I am tall for a girl and am also the handywoman of the house.
Fistmele, cubit, span......all body based 'Biblical' measurements, all existed before the Classical Greeks and Romans, who gave us the inch and foot (Julius & Augustus standardized them) and by Medieval times - pole, perch, rod, fathom, barleycorn..........pre-metric in Australia we had to learn them all. Interestingly places in Europe like Austria still use inches (zoll) for things like carpentry rather than metric measurements.
I guess I'm approximately 0,95 Ray
I love Ray's dry humour.
So 2004 you started your apprenticeship...
.always starts off with the crappy jobs....my current apprentice is just starting to get that
Hey Jess, would you ever do a Garden channel? Love watching your garden grow and seeing what you’re up to with it.
Not all walls are the same, so I do enjoy how you tackle each variant challenges for your work. Thanks for posting.
As an apprentice I was sent to get "left hand screwdrivers" "skyhooks" "post holes" "Fetch me a long stand" "Go get some striped paint" anyway well done Milwaukee power tools. Ray is a awesome bloke thank you Jess & Scotty. Cheers
Easy way of removing that @#&* panelling is to relevel the floor, just make sure you warn Jess beforehand. Putting new posts under an old farm house many years ago and as we jacked and levelled the house we could hear all these 'bangs'. Wasn't until the end of the day when we walked into the room we'd been working on that we found the source (we had looked before, it just wasn't obvious) the panelling had popped of the walls. The glue had given way and the brads had pulled through the sheeting.
Hi Scott - I am not even a builder or in the trades. I just find all your content very enjoyable and interesting to see the South Island. You and Jess seem like such nice people. You can make any video you want and it is all good
Another great episode team - especially loved the Karate Kid reference from Ray “the human tape measure”. 😅
Just need you to know how much I appreciate the tracking match cut at 4:41. Great stuff!
Great stuff. Ray seems like a top bloke
Can’t say I’ve ever measured more than 1 part of my body with a measuring tape.
7:19 looks like Jess is rolling a big cigarette made of pot pouri ? Lol:)
I just looked up the price of Ray's new nail gun and I now understand why he said that funny Dutch word that was not understandable. Gotta say Ray seems like a really nice guy so deserves the replacement Milwaukee nail gun. 👍
About doing the crappy jobs. I was a site manager for many years. Mostly contract work ranging from 3 months to 18 months at a time. Quite often there were gaps before I started a new contract. In those gaps I would do agency work, working as a labourer on building sites. It was good fun and gave me appretiation for the various trades working on site.
Job done well, like I said to the apprentices I used to teach that for a time they would be dogs bodies. Most of them accepted the tea making or sweeping etc and went on to be good crafts men. Thanks for the latest exciting episode and thanks to Milwaukee.👍👍
I loved this video, with all its earnesty, from Ray's surprise to Scott feeling a bit annoyed/insecure about 'boring' jobs in the big picture. This video was great, the content is wonderful, I really like the dry humour of the three of you, whether it's flashy jobs or wall-tearing. This is the only UA-cam channel I'm waiting for the weekly release. Every Friday having the best of lunches with another episode. Thanks so much!
Hey Scott. Just a quick question. When you worked in Scotland & England, were your sites ever inspected by the government, in any structural detail during the build? Here in Ireland, the system is that the builder/developer employs an engineer to sign off on the construction detail. Doesn’t work.
First video of yours I've seen. I love the back and forth between you and Ray. I was laughing alot and I don't mean that in a bad way.
I loved the fact that Ray knows the measurements of his body parts, that's ingenious. And when you were talking about being 17 in 2004 when you started in the business, it reminded me how old I am being 15 when I started in 1969!! I miss the renovation jobs I only do cabinets and furniture now. So I will live vicariously through you guys for a while. Can't wait to see the finished product!!
You’re in for a treat, you’ve got the whole back-catalog of videos to go through!
SBC videos are a highlight of my week. Saturday morning ritual after coming home from parkrun with the kids is to sit on the sofa and watch what Scott and Jess have been up to for the past week.
I hate to disagree with my favorite new zealander (and of course my favorite Dutch carpenter), but when I remodel I find my self going through a whole lot of drudgery to get to the rewarding part. I love these videos, this is where you can make or break a job. I pick up loads...this is the part that gets magically taken care of in all the “reality” shows on American television.
Actually don't mind watching you do your wall framing Scott, because walls are different in every house, besides it's all about seeing how your renovation comes together. 👍 Absolutely happy for Ray's replacement Milwaukee tool.
Love the videos Scott! I would even watch you walk back and forth to your shed for 10mins. Keep up the good work mate!
Weird that you think this would be boring. Super interesting for non-builders home-tinkerers like me.
Ray is generally happy for that nail gun. Good job!
Did you mean "genuinely"? 😉
@@-_James_- yes. Yes, I did. Oh well!
Freaking love opening up rooms like that!! Absolutely great choice:))
Mate for kiwis and anyone doing renovations on timber framed housing your channel is gold. It might be a ball ache to you, but it's all interesting, your edits are articulate and keep the narrative rolling along nicely. Keep it up mate, you're doing a stand up job.
If the renovations you are doing were done by a private contractor would it have been financially viable? The other option would be a total knock-down with a brand new house Having said that I've just renovated a 50 year old weatherboard plus extensions I stopped adding up all the bills a long time ago This is our 14th renovation I am by profession a medico and have moved a lot with my career It's like a drug addiction Every time we move we rationalise buying a fixer upper rather than a bland new house Therapy from colleagues has not helped Unfortunately My impression is that the cost of renovating has exploded
in the last 3-4 years I felt blessed when my daughters more recently partnered with a plumber and an electrician Welcome to the family Now get to work!!!
Cheers

Skadoosh!! This used to be one of my favorite words! And I totally forgot about it!! (Kung Fu panda made it too popular s😛) THANX for the reminder 😅
Kitchen! I’m excited. That’s what I do for a living. If you have any questions I’d be happy to help.
That was really awesome of you guys to reach out to Milwaukee to get him a replacement nailer. And great that they responded in kind. I just bought one and know how every dollar counts. Cheers all! And Ray is a real asset to your channel.
"Sweeter after difficulty" the literal translation of that in dutch is "Na het zure komt het zoet" and that is also a dutch proverb, zo tell Raymond that from me, and yes i'm a dutchie to.
Hello Scott and Jess (Scott Brown Carpentry) from Sydney Australia.
Community gardening competitions- dynamic lift😂
Your garden is giving a vibrant show of color. Seed saving in airtight labeled bags is a great way to continue "harty performers" for next season. Let's not forget to rotate beds for pest and nutritional value.
🌺🌻🌼
Tears my fam, you both are genuinely lovely beings. Love it. Love to you both and all those that are intertwined with the channel and life.
One doesn't realize how consistently you watch these videos until it's not uploaded regularly. Thank you Scott.
A follower from the beginning, such a great channel Scott, love all the content, I know it must be a pain and take a lot longer to film as you go but pretty sure we all love every video no matter how repetitive it might seem to you filming it. Keep up the great work!!!!
Love that dry Dutch sense of humour! The roof beam changes and opening up spaces etc are very similar / familiar to what we did to our 50's house 20 years ago. There's a lot of satisfying DIY you can do. For example my wife was project manager and did all the GIB, GIB stopping, cornices and painting. I think I helped a bit here and there. Nothing like pulling down ceilings with rat poo raining down on you :).
Where is the opening “Scott Brown here!” Don’t mess with the classics! 😁
Brilliant great to watch great tradesman as a carpenter here in the uk
This is yours!
“F off” 😂😂😂
Would also be my response
HOW WAS YOUR WEEKEND ROADD TRIP HOLIDAY IN THE SOUTH ISLAND OFF CHRISTCHURCH SCOTT BROWN CARPENTRY AN JESS IDK SURE YO GUYS AS I WAS DOING DOWN SOUTH IN THE SOUTH ISLAND OFF NZ NEW ZEALAND AT THE SOME TIME AS YO 2 BROTHER CUZZY RORY
I recently watched the very first video you did with Gaston and he was showing off that Hultafors crowbar you're using with the adjustable pry angle :D :D :D
Well, not only watching because of the build, but because of the ones who build. No worries about taking a wall or two down.
Most peoples wingspan is roughly their height, helps too!
Hi Scott! Big fan here from Portugal! Just what to say you are a good hearted man and Jess is the same. This gesture with Raymond and the support you are giving Pareur are also self-explanatory of what a special kind of human you two are! Good luck with your renovation and your business in general. I have my own factory for aluminum and PVC windows and thermal blinds and I like the way you run your business. Keep up the good work! 8:51
get Ray his own channel !!
who doesnt fkn love Ray.. he needs to be in every video!
Scott I will tell you that as a retired electrician that was in the trade from 15 to 65 the first four years you are considered a helper and there was attic work to ditch work but everyone should experience that
Nice to see a new video and hope you enjoyed your free days! 🙂 It is interesting that you go in that detailed level. Watching also all of you old videos, step by step the understanding of how those houses are build is gettinge more complete. Great job!
0:08 Where exactly is this??? 😮
Amazing how an extra 4' makes a room feel huge! And way to go Ray, first sponsorship.
New Zealand has a lot of red tape. Scott would build a house in South Africa in 4 days 😁
Lol the deck took a month with no red tape holding him back 😅
Ray "F.off"....brilliant
I like the additional voice over work in this video. (Don't know if you've been doing it a long time but only just noticed 😅) keep it up
That garden pan shot down to the garage is stunning not sure why I picked out that one shot but it just looked so good
That one and the shot just before it, I think someone got a new camera slider 😂
Good ol Sting Ray my man
I'm sure you have no idea what I'm talking about, but I smiled when I saw the run-time of the video :) It's a geek thing.
Jess, you should start a Gardening Channel. - Learn with Me! Double your Income! :)
I've watched YOU do so much stripping and alteration of that home, I'm wondering if it will survive an Earthquake or Hurricane ...??
Ooooh Er Missus ....
Ray straight to management as an apprentice........no suprise! And the magic bucket....yep, dead on!
Great video Scott. Not boring at all. I'm learning stuff from it.
0:07 .. reason number 1000 why I wish NZ allowed immigration! I'd move there!
Hey Jess, I've got loads of chilis still growing down here in Christchurch... Maybe it's a South Island thing.
''The Latin quote said by Bullock, "Dulcius ex asperis", translates to "sweeter after difficulties". It is also the family motto of the Scottish family name Ferguson and used within their coat of arms.''
I look forward to every video and loved this one too. BTW, my wife and I are planning to drive around South Island later this year (probably from mid-October to the first week of November), flying into and out from Christchurch. Is there anything that you'd suggest we should not miss?
Should’ve been an influencer. Asked Milwaukee for a free hat or t-shirt once. Told me they couldn’t spare any, but I could go buy one instead. Thousands of $$$ worth of tools doesn’t qualify you as a valued customer these days?
*Scott, show us everything, even the crappy jobs.... this is how people are watching & learning.*
That back garden looks so lovely with the blooming flowers etc, yet the new deck built facing the front street. I know its close to the kitchen but ????? I've watched every video by Scott and my carpenter son in Alice Springs, now watches him and he agrees with me re the deck. Sorry to be so negative , I know comments are usually positive.
Ray's wee face!! Happy new tool day Ray! Great progress, Scott - I enjoy seeing how you consider the structural role of each element you are working with and support it properly while you are working on it.
I'm telling you, the bromance between you and Ray is priceless. Love your videos!
Props to Milwaukee NZ for sorting out Ray. Super nice guy, well deserved.
You should celebrate your 20th anniversary of building next year 🎉
I love that metric replaced weird measurements like the king's forearm, and Ray's just taking it back to the old school!
Scott, I think I share your sentiment with the crappy job early part.
It drains a person, especially someone new to the trade yet in retrospect may lend alot towards building a big picture.
However, I also think that doing shitty jobs together (Juniors and seniors alike) would show alot quicker how everything is done at once as not many people would last an entire year doing shitty jobs. Cheers!
Holy wozers 0:06 reminds me how magical the south island is!
Miss New Zealand!
Need to get back over for sure!
I'd watch anything boring from you scott. I like your work standard ethics.
I enjoy the carpentry side but also the comradery and the playful interactions as much. Background music is not bad either!
It’s moving along now and is beginning to take some real shape now - love Ray, he’s so dry and funny. His looks remind me of Joe Pesci’s sidekick in Home Alone, the one who gets the tarantula on his face 😂😂
I've been building for years, I never involve building inspectors in anything you can't see from the street. love your videos Scott !!!
Love watching ur videos
Scott from an apprentice in Blenheim about to come out of his time. I’d like to thank you for all these videos. You’ve helped me a lot cheers! 🎉
Wow. What a difference that makes.🇦🇺🎸⚡️🤘🏼🤘🏿💋❤️
For reference, May in New Zedland months is November in standard months.
Thanks for keeping me company while I do the dishes again Scott. Makes it interesting for sure!
@ScottBrownCarpentry
One thing I did notice is that your strutting beam is sitting on top of your ceiling joists.
Should it not have been packed at each end 20mm up so if it weight of the roof load sags it it's not going to then sag your ceiling joists with the potential of cracking the ceiling plaster?
Always love a SBC video - been following for a few years ! What are those extendable plastic screens? I might need to get some myself
Out of all the channels on youtube this is by far my favourite. Never miss an episode. 👌
Keep up the great work 😆
Hey man, my partner and I are going to the south island in June. Can you recommend 1 must see destination other than Milford. Love your content, as inspired me to do many changes at home. Your Tassie, viewer Dan.
I love the surprised gift from Milwaukee to kindly give him a new nailer. I'm very pleased with this!
In Australia we call the big beam a combined counter strutting beam and the beam supporting the ceiling os a hanging beam, because the ceiling joists hant from it.
This is why remodels are so expensive. We want to make a house something it was not designed for and end up micro-repairing every part. It may have been cheaper to (at the least) tear off the whole roof -ceiling and put in trusses. I wonder if your project would pencil out if we had to hire you to do it under contract.
