- Thought to be extinct only a few decades ago, a small colony of black-footed ferrets was discovered near Meeteetse, Wyoming, in 1981. This video details the history of this species in North America and the exciting discovery that has led to their comeback. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is hosting a celebration of the 30-year anniversary of the ferret rediscovery in Meeteetse Sept. 24-26.

The Black Footed Ferret success story is very important. I am a big fan of this recovery.
I saw what I think was a Black Footed Ferret in the Black Hills on Saturday July 16 2022. We were trail riding south south west of Cook Lake. It crossed the trail in front of me. It was very fast.
Thanks for posting and for the info.
They are such beautiful lovelies. It is a shame what has happened to them. They have been through so much, and I will hope with all of my might that they make a full recovery, along with the prairie dogs.
Thank you for sharing this with us
Have they got something to celebrate about, because 30 years after their were discovered near Meeteetse, Wyoming, they are been reintroduced back into South Dakota, Montana, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Kansas, and New Mexico. Which means endangered species can and will make a comeback. The black-footed ferret is one of them, and that is something to celebrate about. So the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is one of our nation's role models on saving endangered species.
I just saw one today off of 1804 in North Dakota!
It’s 2021 and the black footed ferret just had a scare because the dogs were getting sick
I can't be the only one who's here because of Beth Shapiro and the book Life as we made it.
its history
Well I’m too far North for them! 😛
I actually got a black footed ferret from the pet store
I doubt that you actually did it might look like it but pet store ferrets and black footed ferrets are two different species.
