"You say my heart was never true. That may say more about you." That's it right there. That line gets me because it's so honest. Way to go Rhett. Can't wait to hear more songs from your album.
Dude, Rhett, singing country music, is not something I ever expected but the world needs it!! Thank you so much for sharing your soul through this music!
@@Jessica-yv9gn Fair point. To be honest, I haven't really followed their music over the years so I'm not super familiar with their likes and dislikes. This, for me, was a new and welcome surprise!
I came across this out of the blue, i am 76 years old ,married 53 years to a man that was raised in church. I am not religious i am spiritual, " earth bound mystic i" we have worked it out, I believe in the metaphysical , i am very thankful for this song and this artist. And hears a big hug to him and all those that have been shunned by family and friends because they had their own spiritual foundation that did not fit in to the mainstremthinking. Stay true to your self and your core beliefs. We are all in this together. And i love you all.❤
Just had a convo with our pastor about my beliefs. We’re being excommunicated from the church because of my intellectual curiosity and the conclusions I came to. I appreciate this music. Please keep making it.
I keep coming back to this song. It feels like catharsis, melancholy, and loss in a single package. It's like thinking about any conversation about losing faith and every person that you are afraid to disappoint with that truth. It's just...everything.
What's the old saying? "Country Music is just three chords and the truth"? When you make music that's right for you, it's going to be right for other people.
I initially thought this song was about gaslighting his wife for infidelity, but now that i know it’s about breaking from religion it’s very relatable as someone raised mormon
As someone who grew up super religious and realized in their teens they were trans AND gay. This feels like everything I’ve ever tried to say but was silenced from saying. I don’t really count myself religious anymore but I can honestly say that I don’t know what’s out there. I only know my life and me. The line “I know it shouldn’t matter if you take my word” that part his me like a tank everytime because my religious family have always said the world hurt me and made me feel this way but it’s not that way. I love myself and I wish they could see that love themselves. Thank you James/Rhett. As a mythical beast for the last 10 years this feels like coming home. GMM has always been my home. You guys have basically raised me since Highschool and now I’m getting married and this song is welcomed into my life as well. I cry everytime I hear it. It gives me healing tears.
Thank you for sharing that💚 you should be proud of yourself. Lots of love and light to you my friend. Congrats on the wedding, and congrats on the adventures you have taken! And too many more✨
I'm so pleased to see rhett expressing himself artistically at this level, singing from the heart about something that really matters to him. He sounds fantastic.
The "you can pray, but i dont think its true line." Kills me... the switch from 'lets pray for them' to 'ill pray for you' is a pain that this song descibes so well. There is something about the pleading in this song that i keep coming back to. Rhett has always been so talented
The church has hurt so many millions of people. I wish there were artists like you that have the courage to make songs about their trauma and hurt. It really heals the rest of us. Thank you for being so brave.
I’ve been listening to this on repeat. As someone who has been shunned by family for religious differences, it speaks to me. Thank you for sharing your truth, Rhett!
As someone who is currently stuck in the Mormon church, I appreciate this song so much. I can’t wait until the day I can leave and voice these exact feelings to my parents but for now I have this album that heals my heart a little more each time I listen to it. And for that I truly an grateful thank you so much Rhett❤
You may have heard of it but Tyler glens midnight is a really good mormon specific faith crisis song and trash. I can’t imagine what that’s like i left when I was 19 and it was hard I’m routing for you
I’m coming to this song after leaving Mormonism. This song is amazing. I’m getting ready to have an open conversation with my parents about it, and this song is speaking my actual thoughts. Love it
Some people might understandably not be big country fans but Rhett is harkening back to country’s blues era; it’s a genre used to tell personal stories in a relatable manner. Specifically, his religious deconstruction and how it’s affected him personally and socially. It’s folksy, because we’re the folks who get it.
i’m not a big fan of country music, but this song has stolen my heart. Rhett is such a talented guy, his singing is great and the lyrics really resonate with me. i’m definitely going to be listening to this on repeat haha
I also think the usual association with country=religious is at play here as well, using a genre associated with christianity to portray a story and experience of leaving the church feels particularly powerful.
I'm sorry for what you went through. Being a person, which I believe you are, who has always been genuine and true to themselves, even after going in a new direction, or possibly because of it, it must really really suck to be told "yeah you were just pretending all along". Screw that, that's horse scat. Love your commitment to inject positivity into this world however you can, blessings to you and yours.
The more I listen to this song the more I think this is Rhett writing partially from the perspective of his friend Ben that passed away when they were younger. Ben was no longer religious and Rhett and link both talked about how they were in denial about it and kept wanting to pray for him and he continually insisted he didn't believe.
Love seeing Rhett so serious, now that I know he's such a deep thinker/deep feeler, it feels so genuine to see him exploring deeper topics. 😊 great song.
Wow. Long time fan of the duo. Long time fan of the man. Wasn't expecting to come hear and find a tear. Love it. The presentation. The suit. The name. The music. All of it. 10/10 across the board.
So proud, is that normal? I just see this as such a step forward for Rhetts career, his journey in life and music. What a privilege it is to witness. What a mythical journey
@@BOOGiNS what is this even supposed to mean? Rhett is talented, and in a position where he is able to follow his passion for music. Whats so wrong about keeping your ego well fed? Text isnt a very good conduit for emotions, so I don't want to blindly assume your intentions behind this statement. Are you bitter about something?
I grew up watching some religious DVDs with Rhett and link, and when later in life I was struggling with my faith they released their deconstruction videos and it gave me such peace of mind. This song is so relatable and really helps people going through their deconstruction process. I will always be thankful for that podcast video
Omg the “you say my heart was never true, but that may say more about you” really makes me think of when you talked about in your podcast how people will say that people who left Christianity must have never been true Christian’s at all. THIS SONG IS SOOOOO GOOD!!!!!
I can just say as a fellow Southern man raised in the Church (multiple generations of preachers and pastors in my family) who later became an atheist, can I just say how much of a damn HERO Rett McLaughlin is for anyone like me. On Ear Biscuits and in this album, he spoke to me and my heart in a way no one else ever, ever has. Thank you man. Seriously.
When he said “I don’t think it’s true” my jaw actually dropped. I’ve been really struggling with my faith for the past few years and hearing his experiences has really helped, but this song encapsulates the feelings of not believing in a religion that was once your whole life.
same. i was raised in a very similar church setting as him and link, and i had begun to struggle a few years back, but always found a way to justify and sef identify my self as "christian" because thats who i "was". as in that was my whole identity, but when i started to question the religion, my entire foundation came under fire, who was i if not a christian, and i think thats kind of the point of it, it has to shape itself early as your whole world or else you might realize that its stolen your independence. but thats the appeal of religion, it gives you an out when that nagging existential dread tries to settle in, a clean blanket answer to all of life's mystery's. it took the deconstruction of faith videos to finally put into words what i was feeling, that i was finally ok having questions that couldn't be answered in my life; in fact it even preferable than having an answer that couldn't be questioned. i wish i just knew how empty i was going to feel when it first happened.
Religion is a simple answer to a complex, complicated question. Unfortunately most are happy with any answer that makes em feel warm and special inside.
@@evilmonkey2184 people who say "God made me who I am" I understand why they feel that and hell to an extent they have a point. But that doesn't mean it's real, it just means they lived with a set of rules and they followed them and that's why they are the way they are. No different than why people in the US find it okay to have multiple children while in other countries one is the max. You are who you are by the rules that are set upon you
There's no reason or evidence to believe other than growing up with it or wanting to "belong" to a certain "community" right? I think by this point in history, most people who believe in a higher power or powers are some kind of agnostic.
Despite not being into country as a genre, I've had this song on repeat all morning. Between the lyrics, the actual vibes, and being able to relate to the words? It's wonderful and I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.
If you are into more of this kind of music you should check out Just Let Go by Sturgill Simpson…. and Feathered Indians by Tyler Childers. Two wonderful artist who Rhett acknowledges as influences in his Spotify bio
well thats what real country music is. country music is poetry set to melody the same way hip hop is poetry set to rhythm. if the words have meaning the song will be good always.
"when I say I didn't leave cause I was hurt" Exactly. I'm not "church hurt." I just don't believe it's true anymore. A world of difference in one simple lyric. This album is healing so much for me.
It's clever, I'll give them that. If you paint people who realize you teach BS as simply blinded by emotions or butthurt, you can dismiss them calling you out
one keyword from his deconstruction for me was: ecumenical… When I first became a believer, i remember that spark of feeling that universal, unconditional love for someone, for the world, for all of reality… it was almost childlike, and so special. The word ecumenical reminded me of the hefty layers of “veil” (reminded me of old testament separation of man with God, at least how i was taught) that seem to separate us from something larger than any system (or body of churches…) mankind can create… time for a replay
I feel like my faith was tied to trauma. Because my family didn't believe in God then easter my aunt invites us to go to church and 4 days later we get in a car crash we shouldn't have survived; so we believed it was God that saved us. Now many years later I'm the only one who has left the church, but I left because I got hurt and looked into religion and realized it was a bunch of bs
I believe that this demographic of ex-religious people is really a forgotten group of people, people don’t realize just how painful it can be, this album is going to do a lot of good in this world, and it might even save a few people along the way, and I think it might shock the world to see just how many people out there identify with the message of this album.
Couldn't agree more. This group of people are actually way more common than we may think but are afraid to come out. If this type of music starts to spread it will help loads of people.
It's really not forgotten. There are tons of resources out there for people in this group. The recovering from religion foundation is a great place to start with tons of things to help people who are dealing with religion caused trauma
100%. Rhett is saying exactly what us ex-Christians want to. Our heart was true, but the more we dug and the more honest we were, it just didn't ring true anymore. Thanks Rhett and Jessie too 😘 know it was hard. Hubby and me have been there too. xxx
I'm in my 30s grew up loving country music, but left religion when I was around 18. I really miss the social aspect of everything. It's lonely out here for the non religious. I wish we could have the same sort of things available to us like youth group every week and camps without all the dogma and ideologies.
Damn! I was expecting this to be something comedic, but instead I got slapped in the face by an absolute masterpiece. The music, the vocals, the lyrics, all incredible. I can't wait for the rest of the album. Amazing job, Rhett!
My sister shared the song with me and I saw Rhett and got my funny bone lubed up. Somewhere further than I should have I figured it out and was backtracking to see if I missed something.
Saw the thumbnail and was like, "That looks a lot like Rhett," watched the lil preview and was like, "Wait, that IS Rhett. What is happening here?!" Thought it was another silly music thing or tie in to something. Couldn't have been more surprised. Really great stuff.
Tears stream down my face every time I listen to this song. Rhett and I are so much alike when it comes to leaving the Christian religion. I’m so proud of him for making his dream come true and I will always support him. Much love man
I’m not much of a country music person but I truly love this song! The message is great as well. Very relatable. Please please please tell me you’re releasing this on vinyl! This would be a great addition to my record collection.
@@ambers. Bluegrass is typically faster, doesn't usually have drums, and has a lot of close harmony and instruments taking turns taking solos. I'd say this is track is in the country genre, sounds a bit 70's, akin to something Merle Haggard might have done if you updated that sound for the 2020's.
For the first time in my life, a country song has actually brought me to tears. Growing up in a southern/christian home....this hits hard. Well-fuckin-done
The line "you say my heart was never true, that might say more about you" hits so hard because I am still a christian but I don't go to church because of many reasons, but because of that, my family always torments me and says I'm not a "true" christian, or I'm falling out of faith because I don't go to church. And every time, I just wonder, like as a christian, how can they say who and who isn't?
Amen. I feel you. I'm also a Christian but struggle so hard with people who care more about determining if "your heart was true" or not, rather than just what it means to love each other like Christ. Periodt. The other stuff isn't our business anyway.
We're told in scripture that we will know if someone is a true believer by what they show us in their work and decision making/lifestyle and in Galatians We're told to judge righteously (not self-righteously and hateful as some would)
As a mythical beast for over 9 years, I am SO PROUD OF YOU and cannot express how much I respect you for sticking to your truth and chasing something you're passionate about on your own... KUDOS.
As a Christian I expected to hate this. But this is a beautiful song. He doesn’t say “Gods not real and that’s what this songs about” instead it strikes me as a song about church hurt and doesn’t even need to necessarily be about those things to you. This song just lays out what feels like a heartbreaking message about being heard and you can apply that to anything. I love this song… and if you are a Christian and want to bash this song, maybe do what Rhett says here and pray for him… God is good people all love.
As someone whos deconstructed and left religion, music that represents deconstruction is almost non existent. It's nice to find someone who can put those emotions into music. It's relatable and I appreciate it.
I'm not a religious woman, I never have been, so I could never imagine the feeling that comes with losing your faith. The beauty I find with this song though is that lyrically, I can find it relatable when compared to my own life experience. Whilst the meaning may be different for me than it is to others there's still a meaning to be found. Music truly is the language of the soul.
I had never listened to the Ear Biscuits episode on Rhett's spiritual deconstruction, until today. This song sent me there, to see the most raw, honest, and personal grappling with evangelical christianity.
How are we not talking about that visual transition between the first chorus and second verse?!? 🥺😍😍 This should be labeled as an official music video and not just a lyric video. It's literal perfection.
You looked so passionate, especially through the chorus... This is going to be such a beautiful glimpse into your heart and soul, and as a long time supporter I couldn't be more proud and excited. Besides what the lyrics and message will all entail, your voice is as wonderful as always ❤️
I don't want to swipe the notification away 🥺 I'm really glad you saw both this comment and my tweet earlier about this. Seems silly I'm sure, but it just hits my soul a little different knowing my words reached you and hopefully made you smile.
His first country single (first single released period) and he’s already displayed better traditional country songwriting than 98% of country radio. Bravo Rhett 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
At first I thought the idea of Rhett doing a country album sounded kitschy but Rhett is really capturing what makes great country music or just great songwriting in general. He's being introspective and vulnerable and true to himself and it's most definitely not kitsch. Some people try to write songs that everyone can relate to and they make them generic and then no one really connects with it. Rhett is showing us here that to really connect with someone you have to write *from the bone" as a creative writing teacher I once had told me. The more personal you are when you're writing the deeper you're able to connect with the audience. Wonderful song and lyrics. Also the melody and guitar in the verses reminds me of a song from my teenage years that I loved by some temple pilots called "and so I know"
As a boy whose Mother and Sister listened to nothing but 80's-90's-00's Country this is incredible!!! i have never wanted to buy a country album.......until now
I don't usually enjoy country music and don't ever listen too it but this song just has a certain vibe and style too it that I actually love. The lyrics of this song hit so hard as well. I'm excited for the rest of the album.
Okay, many people here saying "I'm not really into country, but...". Rhett, I am into country, and this is great. I'm not saying this as a fan who will support anything you do just because I like what you do with Link. I was skeptical when I clicked on this video this morning, but this song has been in the back of my mind all day.
I'd love country if not for all of the racism lurking in the back of my mind 😭 like I just wanna enjoy a love song without thinking about the deep south and the confederacy
@@lacie562 then do exactly that? There's racist in all genres of music pointing at country like it's exclusively southern and is just for confederates or something is kind of ignorant? Misguided maybe hate to be harsh granted sure alot of confederates/southerns listen to country but it's not exclusivity
@@alexenochss umm I didn't say that did I? Just that it reminded me of it ... because of the actually racist background. Like I'm not just making this up??
@@lacie562 country doesnt have the racist background you think it does, it was created by and for working class folk and has much of its roots in BIPOC music and culture, i suggest having a look into it :)
@@lacie562 As the comment above stated^ and another addition to add on was it was largely supported by African Americans as it was directly influenced by the blues (: but yes the music was made for the hard working lower and middle class to get them by a days work and to sing about it to pass the time and have something to relate too. Those that spun racist ideas into it only used its popular platform and disgraced country music! It also started in the 20th century
Still an active and devout Christian here and I can definitely say that verse is taken out of context and misconstrued in a harmful way much too often. People get emotional when someone they care about, or especially those they truly hate, separate from God so they take verses like that and use them as a weapon against them. I hope you find truth within your time of reflection my friend, same with Rhett, love from a Christian man to you both and may God bless you, whether we agree or disagree!
As a 55 year old man who for most of my life truly wanted to believe in God and find happiness and strength in it, i just never really could, i really wanted to. For me it just never added up. So hearing this song and being a fan of Rhett and knowing his deconstruction of his faith just really pulled at my heart strings.
The pain is palpable. Very emotional. Hits hard. This song is almost hypnotic for me. So much rings tue in this song that I can relate to my own experience in life.
I think this is why I listen to it as much as I do. Everytime I hear it, it reminds me of my own experiences, and it hurts in such a good way. This song is a masterpiece, and I wish it was more popular. I feel like so many people can relate.
As a man from Texas, this is country music. I’m alternative but country will always be in my roots. This is real, this great Rhett. I love this song so much
It's a hard morning for me to start anything, and this song is the first thing that helped me feel something. I cried buckets. I left my religion because of abuse and I've always felt like I'm a bad person. This song soothes. Thank you, Rhett. It's beautiful, and profound, and it feels it so genuine it resonates. I'm so glad this song is out here for everyone to hear.
This song is all I've ever wanted out of country music. I grew up listening to powerhouse country vocalists like this but they never wrote lyrics that resonated with me. As a gay person who left the church in my early adult years after many spent in Christian schools, this sums up all of my feelings at the time. Thank you, Rhett. This album is incredible. It makes me proud to say that I listen country music again. Please, please keep going.
Reminds me of The Mavericks...I don't like too many country artists, but this sounds good. Not mass-produced, copy-paste "pop" country that floods radio nowadays...I know I'm late, but glad I got to hear this.
Thank you for giving people who have experienced religious trauma, especially in Christianity, a way to harness and understand our emotions more surrounding it. This song is beautiful and exactly what I needed 💕 thank you.
I love that this song is for the whole spectrum of deconstruction and disbelief. Whether you still believe in something or you completely don’t anymore, there’s still something here. For me, it’s not so much the spirituality- it’s the book, it’s the fellowship, it’s the church. I don’t think it’s true. It’s so hard to even conceive that it is, or ever was past a certain point.
I honestly thought he’d have a voice for Country. And to play it in a way reminiscent of 60’s and 70’s Country is the icing on the cake! Way to go Rhett! Keeping the old stuff alive 1 new song at a time!
As someone who was formerly a part of the Christian cult, I’ve had trouble explaining what it feels like to leave, and this song absolutely broke me down. It made my conflicting feelings feel validated and understood. I will cherish this song for as long as I live
@@ExtremeWeatherGroup it's really, really not. Learn what the definitions of words are. You do offend literally billions of people by calling their way of life a cult because you disagree with it. The underlying foundation of the entire Christian belief is that it's a choice you're making. A cult doesn't allow choice or freedom. Certain sects and certain groups of people can be considered cults, but those are the outliers. And the majority of the time, they're not even Christians. They call themselves such, but then have a "prophet" or figurehead that goes against Christianity for their own gain. Normal, everyday Christians aren't in a cult. They aren't forced to stay anywhere, aren't forced to believe or do anything. It's a way of life that is your choice, and that choice is the underlying foundation of the belief. You take that away to become a cult, you can't call yourself Christianity.
@@yeahok5956 I'd like you to point out in my reply, anywhere, where I wasn't being calm. I'm not being combative. But "cult" is not a nice thing to label any group of people just because you disagree with their views. R&L haven't called anyone still a Christian, a cult member.
@@higglybiggly1174 it primarily looks like a cult because for vast majority of Christians and catholics there is somewhat forced beliefs. If you are gay and a Christian in most churches (because that's directly what it says in the bible) you have committed sin. Thus you are no longer welcomed to go to heaven (which ultimately is the main goal for Christians). Not to mention all the pick and choose in different Christianity "groups". Some of them follow the bible exactly who usually end up racist, homophobic, or limited to how they live their life. Next you have the people who decide they don't want to be homophobic, great! Now they aren't aligning to the bible. Lastly the people who are using Christianity as a stereotypical cult tool. Like when a leader convinced 900 people to commit suicide to go to heaven. You probably like to believe they did go to heaven because it sounds nicer. But according to the bible suicide is a sin so what is it?
I’m in love with this song, and I can find myself relating to it too, having grown up in a Christian family and just not having the same feelings as they do. Rhett, you have such a beautiful voice and creativity. I thank you so much for sharing your intimate story with us. I’m looking forward to the future album from James and the Shame. 💞
The more I listen to this, the more I love it. As a devote Christian, the “that might say more about you” line really connects me. I would never belittle someone else’s path, but so many “christians” are jumping at the bit to judge people choices. Looking forward to the rest of what you have to share ❤️

I'm a firm believer in religion but found myself connecting with this song the more I listen to it. I have maybe a different view to most here and yet in some ways the same. I view it as the weight of expectations on our shoulders and how we want our loved ones to understand our perspective on it, whether they agree with it or not. That's the beauty I found in this song, that it relates to so many things. It's sp brilliantly written and sung. Amazing job on this. One that I will have on repeat for many, many days to come. Love to all of the people who connected with this song. I hope you all find what you're looking for in this indescribable world of ours!
Thank you for doing this. Country isn't typically my favorite type of music, but you really hit the nail on the head with this topic. I left a hyper fundamentalist Pentecostal church after 30 years inside, and that transition was rough, but it was the best decision I ever made.
this is that real country. not trying to pander to people by dropping as many instances of the word "truck" as possible, but an artist telling a story that means something to them over music that means something to them too
Not typically a big country fan especially when it comes to "hip-country" but i have been enjoying this song and the album a lot. The lyrics are very relatable. I'm from the South and I grew up in a deeply rooted Christian family on both my mom and dads side. 5ish years ago I made the decision to no longer believe. Coming from experience this rarely goes over well with your family members in the South. Thank you for putting this out there Rhett.
Rhett, As someone who has lost faith and returned to it, I just wanted to say that your music truly speaks to me, just as it does to thousands of other people. It took me years of being on my own to come to terms with what I thought was right for me, and that is to just wish happiness to all those regardless of their gender, sexuality, race, or religion. Thank you for this song, and sharing all your experiences with us, the fans. You are truly amazing! We can't wait for the rest of the album! Positive vibes to you always, my friend!
I don't usually make comments on videos, but damn it if this work of art doesn't deserve some appreciation then nothing does. Rhett, I know that you will likely never see this, but you, your amazing team and your hilarious partner have been creating an incredibly meaningful and important part of my life for years now, and now that you're branching out of your Mythical Tree to explore a different side of your creativity, I wish you nothing but the best. In all future endeavours, I'm sure that you will succeed, flourish, and thrive and that the history that you craft for yourself and your family will be a truly renowned affair. In all honesty, thank you. And Good Luck.
Walk Hard vibes, and I’m here for that, and for Rhett. Thanks for bringing back old school country with great slide guitar. You don’t hear that much these days.
"But there goes my pride... with it's *_refrain_* that i be seen as justified" Took me a second to realize that there was a second use for the word *_refrain_* and I love the way Rhett incorporated that.
Rhett, There is not many songs in this world that I can say touched my heart. This freaking punched my heart man. I keep coming back to this song. It feels like catharsis, melancholy, and loss in a single package. It's like thinking about any conversation about losing faith and every person that you are afraid to disappoint with that truth. It's just...everything.
What's the old saying? "Country Music is just three chords and the truth"? When you make music that's right for you, it's going to be right for other people.
you worded how i feel about this song perfectly.
What is he singing about? Seriously I wanna understand haha.

@@zenchilladas he talks about in the podcast. Basically it's a break up song about faith. It's a great listen if you have the time!
I really dont like this type of music but it's okay as long as I can listen to Rhett 🥰🥰
Ikr? It's unusual to hear music about deep emotions NOT relating to lust/relationships or greed for money
I believe Lingua Ignota’s SINNER GET READY goes heavily into her trauma and hurt on behalf of the church if you want to check it out
eleventyseven is a great band that does that. Might I reccomend the songs Fear the Fire, Birthrite, Letterman Jacket, and Curtians.
So much hurt, so many kids had to go to church on Sundays with their parents. So SAD
The church has not hurt Rhett McLaughlin.
Still so happy for him ❤️ that stuff can be so difficult
1:55 that transition is magical.
I’ve been listening to this on repeat. As someone who has been shunned by family for religious differences, it speaks to me. Thank you for sharing your truth, Rhett!

"I not asking you to agree. I'm just asking you to believe ME" hits so so hard as someone who also left the church 😭
As someone who is currently stuck in the Mormon church, I appreciate this song so much. I can’t wait until the day I can leave and voice these exact feelings to my parents but for now I have this album that heals my heart a little more each time I listen to it. And for that I truly an grateful thank you so much Rhett❤
I have been through this exact struggle with mormonism, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and a place you can live free of judgement.
I’m not a fan of country, but find when I’m singing and making up my own songs, I sound like Patsy Cline. Something comes out of nowhere.
i’m not a big fan of country music, but this song has stolen my heart.
@@WillKrause21 wholeheartedly agree. i think Rhett may have mentioned that he chose country music intentionally for this reason at some point as well
I'm sorry for what you went through.
He’s a thoughtful guy
he thinks about a lot of things
Beautiful song... Straight in 😭

So proud, is that normal? I just see this as such a step forward for Rhetts career, his journey in life and music. What a privilege it is to witness.
What a mythical journey
It's just Rhett feeding his ego.
couldn't agree more
@@BOOGiNS what is this even supposed to mean?
Rhett is talented, and in a position where he is able to follow his passion for music. Whats so wrong about keeping your ego well fed?
Text isnt a very good conduit for emotions, so I don't want to blindly assume your intentions behind this statement. Are you bitter about something?
Rhett is out here with more real country music than most stuff on the radio
I grew up watching some religious DVDs with Rhett and link, and when later in life I was struggling with my faith they released their deconstruction videos and it gave me such peace of mind. This song is so relatable and really helps people going through their deconstruction process. I will always be thankful for that podcast video
Omg the “you say my heart was never true, but that may say more about you” really makes me think of when you talked about in your podcast how people will say that people who left Christianity must have never been true Christian’s at all. THIS SONG IS SOOOOO GOOD!!!!!
I've listened to this far too many times and it's still not enough.
Found it at work, third time on repeat
It's been on repeat since last night
There's just something about it that grabs you. I'll probably never get tired of it.
@@evilmonkey2184 I like that--it's preferable to having an answer that couldn't be questioned.

Despite not being into country as a genre, I've had this song on repeat all morning. Between the lyrics, the actual vibes, and being able to relate to the words? It's wonderful and I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

well thats what real country music is. country music is poetry set to melody the same way hip hop is poetry set to rhythm. if the words have meaning the song will be good always.
100% what I'm thinking too!!! ❤
"when I say I didn't leave cause I was hurt"
Exactly. I'm not "church hurt." I just don't believe it's true anymore. A world of difference in one simple lyric. This album is healing so much for me.
It's clever, I'll give them that. If you paint people who realize you teach BS as simply blinded by emotions or butthurt, you can dismiss them calling you out
the church is a human institution. Everything humans touch is corrupted. But a lot of what the church stands for is worthy: LOVE
This song deeply resonates. I left nondenominationalism for Catholicism. Both are Christian I know, but there is a world of difference between them.
one keyword from his deconstruction for me was: ecumenical… When I first became a believer, i remember that spark of feeling that universal, unconditional love for someone, for the world, for all of reality… it was almost childlike, and so special.
Religious trauma is REAL.

For the first time in my life, a country song has actually brought me to tears. Growing up in a southern/christian home....this hits hard. Well-fuckin-done
"Just-A-Fied" A real country man can make 3 words out of one.

Have loved this song for two years
As someone whos deconstructed and left religion, music that represents deconstruction is almost non existent.

“They went out from us because they were never of us” is what I used to say as a Christian and now those words echo in my head long after I left.
One tiny verse used to invalidate so many people's experiences.
Still an active and devout Christian here and I can definitely say that verse is taken out of context and misconstrued in a harmful way much too often. People get emotional when someone they care about, or especially those they truly hate, separate from God so they take verses like that and use them as a weapon against them.

@d lee no offense but as someone who also left the cult it most definitely is
@@ExtremeWeatherGroup it's really, really not.

This is a such a refreshing piece of country. It’s such a beautiful blend of modern and classic that creates a totally new category today

This is amazing, some of the best music any youtuber has released, ever.
Thank you for doing this. Country isn't typically my favorite type of music, but you really hit the nail on the head with this topic. I left a hyper fundamentalist Pentecostal church after 30 years inside, and that transition was rough, but it was the best decision I ever made.
I feel you. I came from a pentecostal church too as a pastor's kid. It's tough af to get out of that religion
I've never understood religion but I am very spiritual
Getting some real Lord Huron vibes, I look forward to listening to more of your music!
this is that real country. not trying to pander to people by dropping as many instances of the word "truck" as possible, but an artist telling a story that means something to them over music that means something to them too
Really love this and can't wait to see what other works is to come!
Rhett,
As someone who has lost faith and returned to it, I just wanted to say that your music truly speaks to me, just as it does to thousands of other people.
"But there goes my pride... with it's *_refrain_* that i be seen as justified"
Took me a second to realize that there was a second use for the word *_refrain_* and I love the way Rhett incorporated that.
Rhett,
There is not many songs in this world that I can say touched my heart. This freaking punched my heart man. I just heard this song yesterday for the first time, I’m already singing every lyric to the top of my lungs. Every time I listen to it, I can feel myself beginning to tear up. Thank you for making this piece of art!
This is beautiful Rhett aka James! Super talented. 🤠❤
I don’t normally listen to country music but rhett this is absolutely amazing
it helps that it's an older style of western.
@@holdmybeer Exactly i dont like the newer country
Its so good
I'm hooked & I can't stop listening to it over and over and over
I keep catching myself using these lyrics in my discussions about Jesus with believers
