hey dude, idk if you know this or not, but you don't need to use the eraser tool to erase parts of the layer mask, you can use the brush tool and just use the black color to erase. If you want to recover something use the white color by swapping the colors with " X ". its easier than changing every time to ether eraser tool or brush tool.
