@@RichGilbert You eventually stop caring when you realize that hard work is not rewarded, and only those who fail in the extreme ever get fired. When you know anything short of setting the Hindenburg ablaze won't get anyone fired, and hard work is not promoted, you will eventually work just hard enough not to get fired.
I consistently perform better than most, but that work ethic has not really helped me, I work harder for no additional reward. I can't stand signing off on work that is garbage. It is the same at most places, usually for a variety of reasons.

I worked in the post office and this is their whole issue they cant fire and thats why is the worst place to work
