US Higher Education Is Broken
Is a 4-year private degree in the U.S. worth it for everyone? Probably not. The major is much more important than the school. Often, the price of the education is right at the edge of it's lifetime value. It's not worth it for everyone, and there are alternatives.
Some stats from the video that are interesting:

    This hit me on so many levels. I have had those same thoughts. So many people spend their entire lives just going along without seeing the big picture. They live such small lives and are completely satisfied with it. They don't seek more because they are comfortable and secure in their lives. The talk about things that don't matter at all to them They are fans of teams who could care less about them. They wear jerseys of people who have chosen to grind and become a key player and most people will simply buy the team merchandise of a team they down own, buy season tickets to games and pay for the overpriced parking, participate in tailgates, and afterwards leave the game of player who have no idea who they are and wouldn't miss they or have their backs if they needed it. I could write so much more. All my life people ha e told me that I'm so quiet. Truth is I have no interest in what they want to talk about. I read vs watch news or Netflix.

    I have a high IQ. I make money. I have debt, I am not rich. I make bad financial decisions because I can’t view money as a real thing. I do not consider myself successful not because of my financial position, but because everything that I cannot consider any impactful path of action that does not require me to contradict a moral or ethical stance, some negative environmental impact or exploitation of some scarce resource or people, some ethical compromise. I see the consequences of every action, or the ways the action will lead to failure. I am paralyzed by both fear of failure and the fear of the impact of my actions. I don’t know how to step forward.

    I have seen companies shift from compensation based on outcome to plans based on subjective factors. Best I have heard it is: shifted focus from quantitative to qualitative factors. In the past your compensation was based on your production/output and is now based on how the manager “feels” or “thinks” you are doing. This is how companies have been able to single out the people who might not “care” as much when in reality they are just the employees who are not good at or proficient at politicking. It’s all an arms race between the companies command and control structure and your mental health. Mr. Gilbert’s video should be required watching. It should also be the prologue to a whole class in college. Thank you Sir for sharing your insights.

    I believe that smart people never had it easy, and the blanket statement that they did is stupid. It is a stupid people's take on the situation call intelligent people lazy just because they seemingly don't put their mind to use "for the common good". As an intelligent people, I don't like to spend energy in futile corporate causes (I work just enough to live reasonably and to fulfill my food for thought, but I don't enter stupid hunger games style of competitions just to put money in someone else's pocket. By the way, I was not good at school because I was bad at memorizing stuff. For me, things had to make sense, or I would not be able to learn. Got fleeced by my school's psychologist when he tested me and had a result of 130 IQ. He thought I was lazy, when I was struggling.

    I worked for a small town government. Blue collar first responder. Total of 12 years. During the 8th year sickness struck my family and I had to file FMLA paperwork. I had never seen anything so openly blatantly corrupt before in my adult life. Before studying FMLA law, I knew the instructions I was given were extremely wrong. Fmla is a blessing when it is utilized correctly. I had a 16-year-old daughter who would have sudden onsets of debilitating migraines with partial blindness. And the occasional panic attack in public. I needed to be able to go to her and give her aid whenever the unfortunate struck. HR demanded that I take all of my FMLA time at once. Something like 12 weeks. She said that you cannot come back to work for 12 weeks. I didn't need 12 weeks solid. I needed to be able to take a day off when trouble arose. It was a blatant effort to force all employees that utilized FMLA to consume all of their time off at once. So I played their game and during that time I was off. There were annual bonuses and holiday season with holiday pay. Family law states that employers are not required to give their employees, bonuses and extra pay during their time off UNLESS, other employees taking time off for other reasons received those monetary payouts. Like 2 guys that took off The entire month of December for whitetail deer hunting season with rifle. After studying the law. I understood it completely. It even listed an example that was a description of what had happened to me. Every 2 weeks I had to go fill out timesheets and while I was there I printed off, my timesheets and also printed off the timesheets of other employees that were taking the same weeks off as me, but we're receiving bonuses and holiday pay despite their absence. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THE LAW IS AGAINST. I reached out to the federal labor board who assigned me an agent that represented my state reported my complaint and assured me that it would be corrected and I would receive my pay. All I had to do was write a statement of why I had to take FMLA and give proof of my pay so they would know how much the check should be. This representative of the state had come to my county mayor's office and met with them and the county attorney to discuss the matter. He then emailed me a blank form where I was to copy and paste my statement and then DocuSign at the bottom. Oh, how my naive mind was so surprised when I received the last email from the agent. His statement simply said your county government does not pay employees that are taking FMLA bonuses or holiday pay. And that was it. It was over complete corruption, a complete bait and switch. MOTIVATION, If I had won my case then the county would have to retro pay all employees before me that had been ripped off.

    I feel so seen! The best insight I took from this video is that smart people can see the end. That ability means I often chop and change and don't stick with a path for very long because I can already see it becoming unfulfilling and there are few long term gains to be had. However this perhaps makes me look like someone who has little staying power. No, it's more that I don't want to prolong my suffering for minimal gains/pay-off. 😅 But other people can't understand why I don't want to be "settled". It's hard to find a career that offers enough challenge and variety AND feels ethical and aligned with my values, because as you said, the corporate world is just more of the same, working towards a mediocre pension someday!

    I honestly do just well enough at my job. My main goal is to get my paycheck deposited into my account every two weeks. That's it. What happens in between I couldn't care any less about. If something gets done or doesn't.... I do not care. If I can take a short cut to get something done but to do it incorrectly I do not care. I've seen this company screw up so many things it's unreal. And I've seen new people come in with real solutions that should be looked into and implemented basically be told "Shut your mouth boy".... So I'm just loving doing just enough and caring not one bit. If they don't care, why should I? I'll take their money! 😂

    This is so true. I have struggled my whole career with teams and individuals not wanting optimize solutions. I was so frustrated and the stress made me physically unwell. In the last few years I learned that empathy is key. Understanding people and what motivates them allows you to approach the problem differently and has really helped me. Instead getting mad and thinking they are idiots, step back, see who they are, how they got there and where they want to go. Every person is a different puzzle to solve, so it doesn't get boring. • @davedsilva
    @davedsilva 16 годин тому

    Recruiter, here. The problem with the degree is that it tells us you have bad investment decision making skills if you took a loan, thus should not be allowed into any business which values its investments. We prefer to take a clean high school kid and train them. What we are looking for is if you mirror technical job description keywords in the summary at the top of your resume. Most do not and instead say dumb things like they are a fast learner which is basically claiming they are pretty. We shall decide that, lol. The result is new grads are made to wait a few years to understand what a bad decision they made taking a student loan learning fluff. Hopefully after feeling the pain they won't try that in the business. That's one of the new interview questions for any job that has responsibility.
