Hooked a disc on a power pole when I was first learning. This was about on par with my dad's reaction. Visibly upset but not taking the frustrations out on a kid who's learning/ didn't do anything wrong in onyx case.
Exact same thing happened to me. I didn’t bother to put the hairpin cotter in and I left the baler about 300 ft behind me with hoses dragging behind the tractor. My grandpa talked about it until the day he died.
Thank you for how you handled the roller situation and Onyx , and that you didn't directly blame Onyx for it, understanding that it was just something that happened.
I could feel the silent tension as he seen the hitch and was told the pin was still in the tractor lol. "This makes no sense? Kid is lying. What would i do/say if I were him right now to cover this up?.... #^$&&@&!"- voice inside Zack's head... probably. Handled it well lol
@@jonkluver7912 yes I was thinking the same thing, Zack handled that way better than I would have, that's for sure. Plus the fact that he had a friend riding with him...
Others have said it Zach, but, well done for keeping your cool in that situation when time constrants are against you. My son is a similar age to Onyx. It took me a while to realise if you keep your cool, they'll stay engaged more and learn how to deal with a situation when your not there to help. Great videos, keep up the great work.
These things happen. I’ve had things happen before that left me scratching my head trying to figure out how in the world it could have happened. All we can do is repair and keep going and be thankful it wasn’t worse.
My father had me picking rocks with a wheelbarrow, then taking them to fill in ravines and the bottom of the pond. Drove my mother nuts, he wouldn't 'waste' the gasoline to park a wagon up there for me to fill up, instead I wasted time walking the rocks back and forth with the 'barrow. He had....issues.
Yeah we did that on dad's farm for the new barn addition, just mix em into the concrete. The bad news is they didn't work out very well as the foundation caved in after about 10 years.
When we chopped grass for the cows, I drove the trailer. The wagon jumped off the hitch and the pullbar went straight into the cab in the 4455 John Deere. If I hadn't ducked at the last second like I did, I would be dead today. I was 16 years old when they happened... I got my ears warm… You handled that situation really well with Onyx.👌
When i was a young fella about 13 I was towing a single axle wooden spray trailer home for lunch. Was half full. I looked back to see the trailer being dragged along by the pto pump hoses. The pin had jumped out. I was using a John Deere model.G. I stomped on the brakes which were great and the trailer prompty smashed into back of the tractor drawbar..it broke every cross joist in the trailer deck. My Dad just passed away on Sunday but he didnt rip me up. A short time later we rebuilt it together stronger with steel and a new deck. Fond memories and a valuable learning lesson.
We actually did pick em by hand when I was a kid on a farm in Southern Manitoba, you millenials have it so good. We were gaining on them little by little and then some genius came up with the deep tiller and we had a whole new crop of rocks.
I've had the same thing happen with a Lemken tiller. Hit a bump and it jacked the pin right out of the hitch. Luckily I was on the corner turning and was on the decelerator pedal when it happened and the safety chain caught it. I didn't have the clip in the bottom of the hitch pin then, now it doesn't run without it.
What a cliffhanger ending. Will Onyx get the roller to the end of the field? Will the Millennium Farmer get the field planted? Will it rain in 3 days ? Find out next time! Same bat time, same bat channel. That last reference was for the Gen X viewers lol.
liked how u reference to batman, i looked at the old shows when they had fast forward so the car looked to get faster then it did.... 1990... good old nice time...
The same thing happened to us last year. Luckily we used a safety chain and it did it's job and nothing broke. Still crazy how the pins can jump out and back into place.
This totally reminds me of when my younger cousin ran our International into a hedgerow of trees. He said he couldn’t turn it. He didn’t handle it as well as Onyx did lol. He thought he was in serious trouble. I got it out only to discover he somehow had locked the rear wheels with the foot pedal and didn’t realize it. Mistakes and mishaps happen, sometimes when it’s even not your fault. Happy to see how well Zach handled it. Tractor on!
I had a field cultivator come unhooked while I was traveling on county road. The hammer strap come unbolted ? Pin bounced out when I shifted.. JD8640 . It about tipped over backwards onto a car that was following toooo close. The hoses were the only thing that stopped it.. lol
Was one of my first jobs ever...Picking Rocks...I think I made 2$ bucks an hour if I remember correct. And I agree wish I would have had one of those back then LOL.
Thanks for an interesting video everyone. It was interesting and left you wondering what happened to the pin on the roller. Things happen. Appreciate the way the situation with the roller was handled. I agree with you Zach, I believe that pin came up far enough to let the roller come loose. You said the pin was gone. Explains the pin coming up. Sorry the hoses are broken and hose coupler on the tractor will need replacing. I really appreciate the way you handled things with Onyx. Am sure he does also. I had the pull type combine come loose and I caught holy you know what for a week. Things happen around farm machinery. Fix it and press on I always say. Crazy how those dogs get in the four by four. Amusing to watch. They love to ride. You all hang in there. Agree with your dad on keeping the planter going and double back to the roller situation later. You all take care and be safe. Hopefully you can get the roller going without too much expense and time fixing it. Once again, my compliments for handling the roller situation the way you did. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.
Excellent work I'd say to the actor that plays Zach in these videos. I marvel at how calm your dad always remains as well. I grew up farming and it's an understatement to say that my dad would have not remained calm with the roller situation.
Believe it or not we had the same thing happen on a CIH tractor. The pin jumped up, the implent in hooked and the pln fell back into the drawbar. Never could explain it.
Brother used to never bother putting the safty pin in our drop hitches until the mulcher came unhooked going down the road. Luckily it only deleted a mailbox
That exact thing has happened to me. retaining clip falls off, pin works its way up and out just enough for the trailer to fall off and then then pin "magically" drops back in. very irritating, I've gotten to the point I use a chunk of copper wire on the pin handle... but someone mentioned using a tarp strap for that. I have thought about welding a permanent clip onto the tractor side of the hitch that retains the pin handle.
Its the little things that get you every time. I saw an Oliver 6/18" moldboard dropped off the 3 point tool bar. 6 3/4" bolts sheered off. Those little gremlins run around laughing at you. I look back with fond memory of the 4 years I sat in the seat of a tractor.
Had that happen once pulling a disk where the pin bounced enough to drop the plow but landed back in the drawbar. Still haven’t figured that one out. 😂😅I chain the pin down now for the disk.
Did you forget to put an ending in? Poor Onxy, he magiced the roller off. Bit of a pain needing to replace some hoses, but it could've been so much worse with broken hitches, all the hoses pulled out, and the tractor inputs broken too.
Well Onyx, you'll have a story to tell years from now about that strange equipment fail. We all have them. Nothing that can't be fixed. I think a bit more security on the hitch pin is in order. May God bless you this season.
I have lost more of those safety pins in my time. All it takes is some tall weeds or a corn stalk to pull them out. Once had a set of discs come unhooked when i stopped on a hill to open a gate. The truck that was following was able to get out of the way in time. Started using welding rod as a safety pin after that.
That is very true, back when I was a kid we did pick those rocks by hand on and off the stoneboat. That is why I have a rock picker and rock bucket for the skid steer.
It's just one of those things that happens, as we all know how really good Onyx is at stopping immediately if a problem ever occurs and calling Dad. Gee's that wind is something else too!
This isn't he first time something's happened with Onyx at the controls. And his fault or not, I'm always impressed the way you handle it. Always blameless and solving the issue rather than getting mad and taking w/e random thing out on him and/or the things around him. Every time something happens I think back to similar situations I've been in and it just makes me respect you more and more based on the way you handle it. Thanks.
Had a brand new hitch pin break on the crusher, only used the pin on about 10 acres. Brother lost the pull-type chopper, had the pin pop up enough for the chopper to fall off and then reseat in the drawbar. Which was more impressive since the pto shaft acted as a secondary safety pin, not sure what happened to the actual safety pin.
My son had that happen driving a big square baler through town as he was cresting a hill! Thank God nobody was behind him, after the tow company pulled it out of an abandoned house we hooked it back up and he drove it home
The writers really outdid themselves on this episode...even ended with a cliffhanger! Could just feel all the emotions from the actor that plays farmer Johnson, too. Can't wait to tune in to the next one!
My grandfather dumped all of hid field rock at the entrance across the road from the main drive to the house. It's also the same place he would dump the limbs and brush gathered from the ground around the house, once a year (usually in the fall after harvest) he'd burn the brush. Awesome video Zach. Sucks about the roller disconnecting from the tractor. Hope everything can be repaired to working order. 🚜🚜🚜
Your ability to handle unexpected challenges like the roller falling off the tractor with composure and determination is truly admirable, Onyx! Your resilience in the face of adversity is an inspiration to us all. And I Am Floating Village Life
I’ve actually had that happen with that style pin. Lost a turbo max behind me in the field 2 years ago and everything was fine. I started wrapping a tarp strap around the pin to hold it down from potentially lifting.
I’ve had the same thing happen before, I think a Cornstalk took the keeper out of the bottom of the pin and then I hit a bump and it came unhooked taking all the hoses with it, but luckily, I never had trouble with the remotes
On the tractor (Case quadtrac) we use to pull the roller with the pin has a retainer stop for the handle that must be moved manually out of the way any time you want to pull the pin out. Not saying that it couldn’t happen but it has worked flawlessly for us.
I had a cattle trailer pop off the hitch when I was about Onyx’s age. The land roller situation worked out much better than a wrecked trailer in a gully and a dead cow.
Had that happen when I was running a disk luckily I just looked back when it happened. I ended up having to use a chain and to lift the tongue up and hook up
Well, I give you props for maintaining composure. I’ve royally messed up some equipment in my younger learning days. Admittedly preventable as I was young and being stupid. My old man knew that as well. So he never held back.
Same thing happened to me pulling a madako roller, safety pin vibrated out and John Deere's Hammer strap pin lock also failed causing roller to come unhooked and do the same thing. Hitch pin was still in the drawbar. Exact same scenario that happened to you. I got lucky with no hose issues.
The best shot was from the tractor as you turned it on The girls were in the back seat and dad was closing the window on the Polaris and Anna is Looking right at you(0:50)...I am waiting.....Tractor start!!!!!! Check the Glare!!!!!!!!! hahahahaha.
I’ve had that happen with those hitches before. The latch part of the pin pops up and the pin comes almost all the way out and goes back in place with just enough time for the hitch to slip out. It’s a perfect timing kind of situation where all the planets line up perfectly.
Had something similar😢happen when pulling a Sanford disc. If there’s a little to no tongue weight or even negative weight when in the field position the pintle hook can work on the pin and pop it out. Putting a bolt with lock nut on the bottom of the pin(vs a clip) will prevent it from happening again
We’ve had a similar thing happen pulling gravity wagons over a hill. The pin popped up when the load came off momentarily while cresting the hill. The pin dropped right back into the drawbar. What a mess we had.
My husband has had those stupid clips pop out before, so they devised a solution. They would always put a wire on the pin that would wrap around back around through the handle and the draw bar so it couldn't just pop out. Kept all the equipment from falling off. Sounds like other people have similar ideas. We look forward to seeing the rest of the video!
Same thing happened to me 3 weeks ago while finishing with high-speed Lemken disk. Good thing the safety-chain was on. Have enough issue as it is with the hydraulic couplers on the CHN. I'm gonna make my own hammer-strap pine-locker. Two tapped block welded on each side of the hammer-strap for grade 8, 3/4" bolts, to screw a 3/4" plate on top of the pine. And cut the pine flush under the bar for added measure. Some will say they don't like to hassle with bolt when hooking/unhooking (while they also loose their pine lol) Besides, who doesn't carry their Milwaukee impact with two batteries and a box set these days? Also, that could have happened on the road switching field etc. Those pine just raise up by themself with the tension and twisting, and strong enough to break the safety-clip.
Tractor bouncing. Roller hitch moving and bouncing. Pin not secured. Your luck is like mine. The stars aligned and POW!!!! There should be some kind of easy simple lock to keep pin engaged in the hitch tongue. "Some" Dads would've yelled at their kid. You didn't. Good Job Zack!!!!!!!

You know those rocks are just going to run right back out into the field.
Shows how much you know....rocks actually walk.
They actually jump thats why you never see them move
Had a roller bounce off our tractor too. Now we put tarp strap over the pin handle, in addition to the retaining pin in the bottom.
I'm surprised that these new tractors don't come with breakaway brackets for the quick connects. I remember installing those on my older tractors

I’ve had that happen with those hitches before. The latch part of the pin pops up and the pin comes almost all the way out and goes back in place with just enough time for the hitch to slip out. It’s a perfect timing kind of situation where all the planets line up perfectly.
That arrowhead was probably used in the giant ancient crossbows of the day!
Mammoth Killer there!
I love farming so much I'm so happy!
I tie pins in, use clips…. They still work their way out. I am ordering 6 male hose connectors. Might buy 8
Some will say they don't like to hassle with bolt when hooking/unhooking (while they also loose their pine lol)
Besides, who doesn't carry their Milwaukee impact with two batteries and a box set these days?
Also, that could have happened on the road switching field etc. Those pine just raise up by themself with the tension and twisting, and strong enough to break the safety-clip.
Tractor bouncing. Roller hitch moving and bouncing. Pin not secured. Your luck is like mine. The stars aligned and POW!!!! There should be some kind of easy simple lock to keep pin engaged in the hitch tongue. "Some" Dads would've yelled at their kid. You didn't. Good Job Zack!!!!!!!
I snagged a fence with a bailer when I was 10. Pulled about 25 yards down before I realized. My dad wasn't nearly as nice as you were with Onyx!!
I bet you remember putting that back up though. And i guess you didnt do it again.
Yea probably
