  • CAMBERWICK GREEN is a small, picturesque village in Trumptonshire. Each week the villagers undergo such domestic crises as a shortage of flour; a swarm of bees; a water shortage; and rumours of an unwanted electrical sub-station being built in the village. At the end of each episode the narrator bids farewell to the puppet character who was seen at the beginning, and the latter disappears back into the musical box.
The series was written and produced by Gordon Murray in 1966. Music was by Freddie Phillips, and narration and song vocals were provided by Brian Cant.
The Driving Along tune was used whenever there was a journey between locations, occassionally as an instrumental, but usually with appropriate lyrics. This is the army truck version.

Fifty years later, the villages of Trumpton, Chigley and Camberwick Green are now part of the same town. There has been so much infill development and the giant Trumpton Business Park on the green belt, that when I drive through, I can't tell where the three former villages begin and end. A lot of empty shops in the centre too. Just charity shops, bookmakers, one Weatherspoon's, a Costa and a few greasy spoon cafes. So sad what has happened to English towns and villages.

Civilians in modern-day Britain increasingly appreciate this too.
If I was asked to sing a song where each line of the chorus rhymed with "truck" - and it was for children - I would have enormous difficulty.
It must be a skill you acquire if you are called Cant.

Luck, duck, buck, muck, cluck. And I have a Viz reader's sense of humour, and I thought of all these non rude words on the spot.

If you remember, there was more than one version of the driving song. At least two other characters (Mickey Murphy the baker and Farmer Bell. I’m sure there were others, but those are the only two that come to mind) had their own versions. You could be mixing it up with Farmer Bells driving song. 🎶Driving along in a farmer’s truck, in an I can Do Anything farmer’s truck. A pig or a hen, a calf or the men, a bale or a sack all go into the back. You can even spread muck from a farmer’s truck, an I can Do Anything farmer’s truck🎶

If I'd been one of the "soldier boys" I'd have been sick over the soldier boy opposite. (I never could sit sideways on in a vehicle without needing to vomit.)
