- Let's build an offroad service truck!
This FSJ Jeep J10 started life as a fun truck ready for the farm... But we want more! Swapping this onto a Cummins powered 1 ton Dodge opens up a world of capabilities! Today I'm planning, ordering, cutting the frame in half and planning some more. This is a great start to building trucks in the new shop!
I hope you enjoy it.

Dirt Reynolds would love your vote, and as always, we appreciate your support! 🙏🤠 www.onxmaps.com/offroad/app/build-challenge
I vote j10. It looks rad
Half j10 bed half flat bed, seen that on newer welding rig truck. Could be cool and different
I would so go with the original bed, hate the flat bed idea.
J 10
J10 Bed
It looks good with the Jeep bed. It makes it unique. Everyone does flatbeds.
Yes, and NO bro smoke stacks!
@@MrMrsregor Stacks are for High Schoolers.🤣
I love flatbeds, but this thing looks awesome with the factory bed. I don't think anything else is gonna beat this look.
Kroil works way way better the wd40. I promise you'll be pissed off you waited this long to use it.
Leeeve the J 10 bed pls. I have waited over a year to watch you modify that FSJ, ur helping me recover from old age. Godspeed
Definitely J10 bed. You can modify it if you need to. FWIW, your Lexus build was actually my favorite of any build I have ever watched. I loved how much capability you brought out, with so little actual difficulty or complication. Simplicity is genius.
Thank you bro 🙏. I'm glad you saw what I did in that old 80 series! They are such capable trucks
I had the same thought. I get it wasn’t the most flashy, but I loved all the detail work
J10 all the way..... anyone can do a flat bed.... You can do a cool J10.....
Can an old box bed be thrown in the mix? Tons of storage for tools, recovery gear, and some have welders/ air compressors with them.
J10 bed for sure but add some rub rails/ reinforced fenders so if you do slid into a tree maybe it survives
Honestly that j10 bed is so iconic, i think within the modern world we live in now. There is plenty of parts to modify it to create the usability you are aiming for.
J-10 bed all the way.
J10 hands down is such a better look for this iconic truck and how few of them you see. J10 bed all day 100%!!!
J10 bed for the win.
100 precent!
J10 bed! I love builds that add capability without completely changing the vibe of the original vehicle. Your orange 80 series was a perfect example of that- I was shocked by how much suspension and tire capability you were able to engineer while keeping the general vibe of the vehicle honest!
J-10 BED!!!
j10 all the way. it's nice you're making your kid's first off roader. what a good dad. tall swampers>
J-10 bed for sure. If you just build a flat bed, it will look like every other old farm truck. Make something unique, Jeep bed.
IMO if you really wanted to go over the top I would think about turning it into a crew cab. It may be a bit much on the time/budget for the competition but they look sooooo sick as a crew cab and you have more room for activities. I’m the fan of a flatbed or utility type bed but I could go either way. The shop is looking great too by the way!
J10 bed for sure!
Love the J10 bed. Glad you gave it one more go.
I'll also add that I appreciated your real life FJ-80 build, and felt it was the perfect build for an all around truck.
Years ago I asked you for advice on welding. I'm now employed as a welder in a engineering shop. Thank you for your support! Your words have motivation and reach!
What do you weld if you don't mind me asking
@@imacaryay7628 C02 welding, mostly fixing masts & carrages for forklits
@@imacaryay7628 Probably metal I assume, but I'm not a welder
@@deletethatstuff 🙃
J-10 bed!! I love the oem+ look that it brings. Those who don’t know about these trucks may even think it’s factory
J10 all the way. You can always “evolve” later with a flat bed 👍
I'm starting to think this way as well. I could always try the j10 bed first and go from there. 🤘
I did like the stubby wrecker idea, would suit that cab. Kinda like Rorys Old Blue!
I love seeing the baby truck help taking parts 😂🥹
And yes, use the J10 bed
I think the jeep bed makes it actually more unique. Go with the J10 bed. Can’t wait to see what this evolves into.
I vote j10 bed but come up with a quick change system so you can do a flat bed later and go back and forth. Best of both.
Looks like things have changed and people want the J-10 bed, and I’m all for it! You gotta do the Jeep bed!
Nooooo! The J10 bed looks is so good! Gotta keep it.
Tbh from a everyday use standpoint, the flat bed is the best choice. But for some reason I still vote for the jeep bed, just looks sick!
J10 Bed all the way. Going to be an awesome build Nate!
Dude! J-10 bed for the win! Can't beat the cool factor!
J10 bed would be I would go....look sweet
Definitely the J10 bed.
Stick with the J10 bed. Keep classic!
Dirt Reynolds needs the J10 bed. It looks cool and flat beds are a dime a dozen. Loving this build so far!!
Jeep truck bed!!!!
The Intro is Classic!! J10 for sure!! HAPPY BeLAted Birthday!!
I voted flatbed last time, but the dually tuck with that 14 bolt axle on the j10 bed is insane. I vote j10 bed now
100% Jeep Bed. Do that for a while for coolness and you can always build a flat bed in the future. Because based upon your previous vis (using the camping trailer as my example, you will get hung up in the details of the features on the beds design, vs. Just getting this to an operational vehicle. This will allow. You to get it on the road and design (in your head) what you would want on your flat bed. Plus you. An do the flat bed on the side as a parallel project while using this truck.
Keep the J10 Bed, that looks SO COOL with the J10 Bed
ya, I missed something. What happened to your Tacoma. The quick glance in this video showed it has right front damage. Glad to see you are okay. Jealous of the shop though... Disregard my question.
J10 bed, slider-nerf bars that tie into fabricated flares into a rear bumper. Tree/rock proof with similar body lines of the truck. I think it would be sweet and still be custom.
J10 bed absolutely! You asked and I commented before the video even ended. Sorry about Girth Brooks :( hope everything works out with little hassle there!
JEEP BED!!! Looks so much better after you have set it on top. Using Moab Motorsports Blue is a great modified functional bed!!
Go legit ham on this one. Do a custom bed that integrate the J10 bedsides, slice them horizontally and build internal hinges so you can fold the top half down as work tables/bed access when you're doing trail repairs or cooking lunch.
Sorry to hear about the Taco. Keep moving forward! Love ya Brother.
Thank homie, I appreciate it 🙏
Hmmm. How about a custom Canadian style flatbed with removable J10 side sheet metal?
I loved the Lexus that you and Dave put a ton of work and details into!
J10 bed should be the way to go !
Sad to see Girth in such sad shape - But that J10 bed would look amazing on Dirt! Keep in classy fellow Pierce neighbor
Loving this build. Would be cool to see the jeep bed used to make a welder style flat bed, Use the bottom of the jeep bed to match the cab.
I appreciate the opportunity to weigh in and vote for the J-10 bed but just choose the bed that makes you want to turn around and look at it as you walk away.
I would love to see the jeep bed with service boxes under the bed sides. It would be the best of both worlds.
Dude. J10 bed all day long and custom bed flares for the dually coverage.
I like factory bed!
Hybrid j10/flat bed look at the pipe line welder rigs they section the bedsides and flat bed above best of both world.
No to the flatbed.
J10 bed for sure! I used to have a 69 J20, loved that truck. Wish I had it back.
I must have missed it, what happened to the Tacoma? 2:18 shows front right damage.
Didn’t miss anything he hasn’t posted about it yet or maybe isn’t going to not sure
He posted it on his Facebook page. Hit a large elk.
oh dang ya I don’t use Facebook that would explain it lol ya there is some big elk here in the pasific northwest
If I hear back from insurance soon I will have bonus video about this 😎
Yay can’t wait to
What the heck happened to the tacoma?? I havent seen a video talking about a wreck. What did i miss??
It's gonna be awesome no matter which bed you go with but I personally LOVE the jeep bed on it. It's not mine though and you need to build it the way YOU want it!
J10 Bed looks better, flatbed is more practical. Either way it will be cool!
J10 bed definitely
Looks crazy good!
J10 bed, keep body together as much as possible!
J10 bed, please.
J10 bed but modify it like a weld truck does. J10 flatbed hybrid!
Im so pumped for this! Still think you need to do something Tremors related with her.
Ooooo tremors! Back to Perfection
Dude, I would love to work in a tremors vibe somehow. My dad took my brother and I to see tremors when it first came out. We saw it on a military base in Greece (we were stationed there), and we were WAY too young to understand what was going on! I remember being scared to let my feet touch the floor in the movie theater 😆. Good old fashioned 80s memories...
If he did that, would have to change the name to something Bacon. I vote Tremors build too.
@@DirtLifestyleyoure going to break an axle pulling crap like that valentine.
@@DirtLifestyle You could take the logo that's on the door of the tremors truck and hide it somewhere either on the dash or the flatbed or something, so it pays homage, but isn't a clone maybe?
Dirt Reynolds will look the best with the J10 bed- That’s my vote 👊👊
J-10 bed!!!
I love the look of the J-10 bed. But it would be a shame to see it destroyed out on the trails.
OG Bed +1 Flatbed is the easy way👍👍👍
J bed. Your Lexus was my favorite from last comp
J-10 Bed!
I love the look of the jeep truck! I think leaving the jeep truck bed on and utilizing it is going to look so cool and unique.
J10 💯!
Keep the J10 bed, if it gets trashed you can flatbed it later
Whinch is ugly. Get a modern winch.
J10 bed... but you lost me at keeping the duels.
Dirt Reynolds deserves to have the J10 bed! It'll make a more unique rig because most don't want to package things around OEM equipment. Excited to see how many times you go back and forth haha.
What's the system this is gonna be something very unique
J10 Bed!!
But if you do go flatbed, maybe incorporate the J10 bed into it, like build a fuel tank out of the front with storage compartments, and flat bed from there back.
Cool truck, J10 bed definitely
I make a j ten crew cab j ten crew cab that's different
Flat bed would be the easy button. This is not an easy button channel and the inspiration required to not do the easy things is why I love this channel.
What would Nate do? He already has the right dually axle. Why not just bring the awesome as per usual?... and inspire me!
Have you considered an air to water intercooler? When I did my cummins swap I briefly considered doing this, as it would've meant I could mount the intercooler anywhere and take up less front end space. I ended up just extending the front bodywork to fit the stock cummins air to air intercooler, which was a ton of work, but means I can use aftermarket cummins intercoolers/rads if I wanted. Looking back on it though I wonder if I made a mistake 🤣. In the long run air to water may have made the entire swap much simpler without sacrificing power and reliability.
Seems like air to water would be great for your use case since it sounds like the alternative is no intercooler at all (stock intercooler could add ~45% density ratio). Personally though I'm just biased and I want to see somebody try it 😅.
Do the jt 10 bed but bob it. Why is this not “the option”
I'm the VP of the Salem Jeepers in Salem OR. We are hosting the 2024 Salem Jeep fest this year at the fairgrounds. It will be on August 3. Let me know if you are interested.
Definitely should do the j10 bed!
Keep the j10 bed, maybe do something custom where you use the factory bed but make it a flatbed somehow by cutting the bed. I’ve seen similar in the past!
I have a ‘70 J2000 Gladiator. Started watching your channel because of the J10 way back when. I could never find someone else with a similar truck doing the work I was interested in. I’m so happy seeing this truck revived. Can I snag that old custom rear bumper for the J10???
I'm having the same fight on my channel, doing a 1950 chevy with a cummins and I can't decide if I shorten and try to find a stock bed or flatbed it and gooseneck/tow etc
I loved that Land Cruiser and the build philosophy behind it, voted for it nearly every day.
After owning FSJ's for 20 years, I would love to see you keep the bed. But the ditch the stack. I would route the exhaust out the side through the rotted part of the bed (which is a very common rust spot). I am not sure if that C&C axle will work with a pickup frame. The C&C frames are a lot narrower, though I am sure you have measured all that. Loving the build!
I say keep the J10 bed it looks rad!
for the record, your build last year was my favorite.
Didnt like the Power Wagon. Seemed very unfinished to me. Colt’s S10 was sweet. But the Toyota Rocklander was awesome. I was sad to see it go
Omg keep the bed!!!! Looks perfect. I would like nothing more then to see an old clunky used looking complete j10 hauling a trailer with a rig and tools down the highway
J10 bed all day. I like your idea of the narrow cab and chassis rear and with factory J10 bed and fenders. Makes me think of the wheel stance on the truck “quagmire” from top truck challenge back in the day!
2:18
What the fuck happened to the Taco?!
Keep the original bed!!!
Point of clarification -- is "Dirt" Reynolds written in stone, or should it be "Durt Reynolds"?
Personally, I'd go with Durt Reynolds.
Cuz it's goofy.
Love your videos, btw.
J10 bed all the way. Custom Classics are the bees knees and all the kids are doing it
A sheet of plywood set to goal approach angle would have simplified the winch height exercise....imo
J10 Bed. Suck it up, use the Jeep look with some heavy duty rock sliders in more than one place.
Umm, hold up! 2:18 into the video...... Is the Tacoma wrecked on the trailer in the background?? WTH?! Everyone okay? Dude, hope all is okay. Glad to see you back in the shop building stuff. And the shop looks awesome by the way! Edit- My bad. 16:33 we get the explanation. Glad your good Nate.
never put the Chevy stepside bed on the J10, try the original bed or a honcho jeep stepside. This combination looks much better. Greetings from Germany.....
It’s a service truck, needs a flatbed with a bed mount welder and torch, loaded up with tool boxes. The J10 bed is the easy option for sure but you’re calling it a service truck, deserves a service type bed IMO.
Sorry about the taco 😢
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
So...I'm confused??? Are you using the Bed or Not?..I think ya Should..looks better 2 Me..I'm mean..a Good Flat bed is nice..as Well..but could also maximize the use of the Bed Box...
