Great Documentary. Does anyone remember BASS .. British Association of Sound Systems ? These guys helped us play Carnival in `86 at the little castle on Basing Street .. not there anymore. We wre called Metro Inc and 2 out of 3 of us were white. We got abuse and respect in equal measure ! Happy Days
26:12 I totally agree. It is a total waste of time playing heavy bass if it not a quality sound. Went to a dance last weekend in The Netherlands - a top sound was playing. Most of the time it was just noise. Did not enjoy it. In contrast, the last time I was in Jamaica, walking back from my grandmother's funeral, the sound Bodyguard were stringing up for a bush dance. Trust me, the QUALITY of the sound was just out of this world.

Years ago they used to know how to play, but now regardless of the acoustics of the venue etc, they just drop bass as if dropping just bass is the thing to do. You need to know when to drop weight. Shiloh in my opinion have forgotten how to do this. You can't just go around dropping weight for the sake of it. It might impress some French stoner in the Netherlands for a weekend, but for those of us who LOVE sounds systems, weight is applied IF and WHEN required - not all the time.
I remember going to listen to jah tubbys in the early 80s, we used to follow them all over, I remember some sessions at hackney downs and brook road stoke newington, I miss them days!!

Of course, after I got out of hospital from a motorbike crash that left me with brain injury. I started going to iration Steppas dances in leeds. I would help put the speakers away in the morning. Got to know his crew and they took me to dances all over UK and I could have gone abroad if I had a passport. He looked out for me when I was unwell. I will never forget how a group of people who I was a stranger to, treated me like family and helped me with recovering. 💚💛❤️

Can anyone here confirm (i heard in a different docco about Channel one) and he was saying that they prefer mono sound, is this still the case if a song is recorded in stereo or does it have to be mono to be played on a mono system? I understand why its maybe better, less cancelations form bas and mids ect, but i thought stereo imaging/big soundstage was the goal
Exactly right with the random room thing; I've also noticed many older reggae tracks used 4 or 8 track recording, and they'd use the left hand track for something like a main vocal, and the effects on that vocal on the right track. If you play those mixes in stereo it can be jarring to hear a clean sound out the left and the affected sound out the right. But those songs were intended to be played in mono, so they sound better on mono systems

(Talking about this one, just simple but effective tune on bass machine emulator [tho yes: can play proper bass as well]; which is still one of my favourites: m.ua-cam.com/video/yZLFr4AZ7-o/v-deo.html ). But according to data espoused by King Shiloh [grettings, btw: as used to attend those sessions at the Rec] Sound, in this video: probably expecting artists to share PRE-release; as in "Here's a 'Special', man (just to play ONE time in the session, and Never again)". Well that might be good from the Sound System's view, but other than sounds too good from perspective of the ARTIST: artists wanting their top tunes to be played time & time again, by as many people as possible (rather than just being forgotten about).

Has nothing to do with the quality of the sound but has anything to do with roomacoustics. Soundsystem outside or inside is a huge difference.

Mono stack is often still preferred cause it's easier to deploy into a random room
