    Omg, I saw this episode years ago! PC Tracey's frustration about people not wearing their seatbelts really got to me back then, and it still does now.

      Just before covid, my wife was unpacking our car late in the evening, and found herself confronted by a well-known young thug who proceed to punch her in an attempt to steal the car. I waded in with the business end of my walking stick (we're both in our 70s) and the lad took off. Police arrived 25 minutes later (from, we later discovered, half a mile away!) and attempted to arrest my son, who had REPORTED the incident. And who seemed interested only in my possibly 'excessive' use of my walking stick!
      Police - eventually - chased down the offender, who pleaded guilty to 20 thefts and a half dozen assaults THAT SAME DAY - two of the assaults very serious.
      He swaggered from the court - smirking - with a 3 month community service order. Which we were assured was nothing to do with his father's membership of a certain mutual organisation - a membership shared with local police and judiciary.
      I mean - what's the f***ing point any more?

    I don't understand why people just think it's the law to wear a seat belt. The belts are there to save lives. When I get in a car, and it doesn't matter which seat I'm in I put the belt on.
    Back in the 1960s before they were fitted, I was the rear passenger in a Humber car that skidded on a bend, the car spun and rolled several times. I ended up sat on the front passenger's lap, luckily the car was a tank and we escaped with just bumps and bruises.
    I bought a MG Magnette and while giving the interior a good clean found mountings in the door post and under the seat for belts. I bought a pair for the front seats. This was 1963/4

    £60 for not wearing a seatbelt? That's about $90 Canadian. In Ontario the penalty is a fine between $200 and $1,000 plus 2 points on your license. The more offences on your record, the higher the fine. I can pinpoint exactly when i started wearing a seatbelt. 27 July, 1972, roughly 3 in the afternoon. That was the day my mother took possession on her new Dodge Dart, our first car with seatbelts in the back and a seatbelt warning buzzer for the driver and right passenger. Ma's edict was "If I have to wear my seatbelt, everyone does." We wore our seatbelts.

    It's very frustrating that. Even if the police do stop people correctly, Nobody ever gets penalized for their crime. And not just simply getting away with a Fee. But with actual prison time even if it's only for a short Amount of time. But that may be because our prisons are full and our government don't seem to want to build more facilities or make use of unused buildings and turn them into the necessary detention centers and prisons and rehabilitation centres that we need.

    Here in California, we don't have tollbooths anymore. Instead, if you're going to be traveling frequently on the toll roads -- and we only have two or three of them -- you get what's called a --oh, crap, brain fart; starts with Trans, can't remember what the rest of it is. Anyway, it's a transponder, and when you pass under a transponder antenna, you hear a beep, and your toll is paid. You have to reload them as needed like a reloadable debit card, but it prevents accidents like the one here.

    • @tuumification
      @tuumification 9 місяців тому +2

      There are very few toll roads in the UK so asking everyone to buy a transponder is probably not reasonable. The M6 toll is not a heavily used road (at least when I have used it), there are plenty of other options for locals to use and if you are not in a rush then the M6 proper is free and is good enough most of the time.
      In the US there seem to be significantly antly more toll roads, especially around the DC area, so keeping traffic flowing smoothly is probably a biger consideration. They have automated toll booths in many countries but you still have to pass through a barrier across the toll booth.
      I like the transponder system and if we had more toll booths in the UK then it would be a more efficient system to use in my opinion. 🎉.

      What an antiquated system. I use the two road tunnels under the river Mersey which have tolls. I have an online account. You fill in online your number plate details (licence plate) which remains the same as long as the car exists. You pay as much credit as you want (minimum £10). As you pass the tunnel entrance pay booth a camera reads your plate and the correct amount is debited from your account. The arm flies up and lets you through.
