They don’t call working in the Bering sea one of the deadliest professions for no reason. If your not willing to give your all to complete the job, you only tend to bring down the total output of the crew and there’s no reason for you to even be near Alaska. Just my opinion 😤

They weren't going have him out on deck.
I've seen the injured guy run the kitchen and pull watch while the others sleep in the past.
It really makes a difference to the crew to come in to a hot meal on the table as soon as they are off deck instead of having to start cooking when all they want is sleep.

@@robertjohns7932 People who don’t struggle with chronic pain don’t seem to understand. I had a near fatal car accident in 1993 and bad work injuries in 2009. My whole life I was told to man up…I did. I was medically retired in 2013, and after a six year battle, I won my ssdi. I’ve had 21 surgeries since 1993. I’m being told I will need more, but because I look fine on the outside, I always get ridiculed and struggle to get doctors to believe me. Not looking for any sympathy, just agreeing with you. It pisses me off when someone try’s to guilt trip another person into “push through the pain.” I had a L2 compression fracture at 18 in 1993. I had two fusions at L1/L2 and hardware installed. In 1995 the hardware was removed because it was tearing through my skin. I started having issues in 2004. I was told I was too young for more fusions and to take pain pills as long as I could.
In 2009 I was injured on the job. Tore tendons in my left ankle and smacked the back of my head on a concrete floor. I was refused treatment for a year by work comp because the doctor kept saying nothing was wrong. I’ve now had five surgeries on the tendons (2010, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018) and I’m needing another surgery. Unfortunately the tendons are so deteriorated, I don’t know what can be repaired.
The head injury was never treated or accepted by work comp. I now get constant migraines. I had bilateral carpal tunnel surgeries in 2016 because supposedly that’s what was causing the tingling and pins/needles in my fingers. Turns out it was my neck causing the issues, but because it wasn’t looked at after bouncing my head off the floor, no one listened to my complaints of feeling like I was holding onto an electric fence for 6 years. The surgeon butchered my hands and now I have permanent nerve damage in both of them.
My neck has bulging discs and pinched nerve roots from C2-C6. I had a herniated and ruptured disc at C6/C7 that was removed, a cage installed, vertebrae fused, and a plate installed in 2021. I was just informed that I’m going to need the rest of my neck fused. My back from L1-L3 are bulging discs and L3-S1 are degenerative discs, so I will need fusions there too. I was told earlier this year that my right hip needs to be replaced too.
All because doctors told me to man up and deal with the pain by taking pills. My whole life I was raised to ignore the pain. I can’t do anything about that now, but I try to talk to people who I know are suffering to explain they only have one body, one life, one chance. Don’t screw it up because of ego and pride.

I felt I had to make that choice cause it was redundant to be at work not at full potential and risky I could have damaged it permanently more so than I have. I had worked my entire life, it was the only thing I knew and I knew jack all about disability or any other Gov. agency or how they would keep me and my family afloat. So I went back to work and 3 years later that hip replacement was trashed. I then spent 4 1/2 years on crutches mainly because when the hip went out I was between insurance plans. I finally got a second hip replacement, listened to the doctors this time and filed for my disability. It was something I never expected to have to do in my life but ill tell you im damn glad of all those years working and paying taxes because it majorly affects the amount you receive. @@cal-king injuries like this take longer than just 4 weeks to heal. It may be estimated to take that long, but majority always has it lasting longer than specified. If not given the time to heal fully, it could leave him with lasting effects that could possibly stick with him for the rest of his life. For a lot of people, their job is just not worth receiving lasting complications to their health.
And whos to say that they would have even allowed him to rest that long? And it wouldn't have even been the captain, the crew would have made his life more hell that it already had been.
From what I've seen, the crews of the ships don't always have the same thought process and morals that the Captain's do. While John may be a good man who tries to keep his crew's health in mind, his crew very well would make Philip's time onboard be hell. Especially Freddy. They would have only seen him as a liability, and done their best to get him to either snap and start a fight, or break and leave.
Phill may have seen this and decided, combined with the injury, that it just wasn't worth it. His health and wellbeing are more important than the job. And who's to say that it's be the last time he'd be on a boat? Just because John won't hire him doesn't mean another ship won't. Maybe he might pick another job instead of fishing or crabbing.

I would have said sure I’ll say I’ll drive the boat with my good arm and since you (captain) have no injuries you can take my place. I worked through injuries before and one injury I had to my shoulder didn’t heal properly so I have pain, don’t have full movement and if I over work it I get a flare up so I can’t use it for 1 week. I broke a bone in the top of my foot I didn’t go to hospital so it healed wrong and if I use my foot in a way that a lot of pressure is on the top of my foot I will have a flare up and be in a TON of pain and I also get flare ups if my foot hangs over the bed not supported and when this happens it takes 2 weeks to go away it hurts more then breaking a bone. When I went to the doctor for it finally they did X-rays and told me that it broke at some point and healed wrong. The doctor said he couldn’t believe that I didn’t go to the hospital when I broke it because the break was so bad judging how it healed that they would have wanted to do surgery. It’s not worth working injured

Fishing is insanely tough. It's not that you HAVE to work through the pain of an injury, and going home can definitely be the right thing to do! But if you have wear and tear on your body that's a liability at sea and a negative consideration in hiring :(. If you get replaced and everyone's doing the job well you don't necessarily have a spot, that's always how it is. They usually stay friends and know other boats or often come back after some time if they do want to stick around. You can stay on the boat and rest and cook or clean one-armed and things like that. Respect the man said it was his last season anyway. I could not hack it at all.

agreed. I fish and that contract is your word you will stay. I tore up my palm with a knife that needed 14 stitches. I couldn't bend it which made it useless. Hurt like a bitch! Captain knew I was effed up. Told him I want to stay and just do anything I can do with one hand but I needed him to understand I was very limited but wanted to stay. Also told him I needed a day off as it was really messed up. I wrapped my hand in a few plastic bags with tape, chopped bait, sorted the best I could, made coffee for the crew, took care of their wet clothes etc. From that I got mad respect which built a tight bond of respect. That is everything on a boat.

Working through the pain when you're young puts you in a wheel chair when you're old. I work a physically demanding job, suffered injuries, worked through them and then got wise. I wrecked my back before I was 30. Now I tell all the newbies if they get injured just get a doctor's note and stay home. Making a few extra bucks this year and ending up on the disabled list at 40. It's just not worth it in the long run.

I have known Eddies family for over 40 years. What I can say of the three generations I know is that they are tough, strong and proud men. Men of honor. It hurt Eddie to his core that the doc told him to go home. He doesn't owe the boat anything, he has no ownership or legacy except that of hard and honest work. Wyatt on the other hand, is a Hillstrand by blood but not by attitude. He wanted the money but was not willing to do the work. I am not saying he faked an injury, just that his grandfather would have disowned him. As for Jonathan's words, he was crushed that his own family would not stay on the boat to do whatever he could to help out - there are a hundred things that can be done on a boat without stressing that shoulder. Wyatt does not have the heart of a fisherman.

    • @10MinutestoRouletteFortune

Very true, he could have done simple jobs, the crew would have been OK with it, he would have gotten respect and he would be sticking to his oath of the contract as that is man's word he will stick it out. He could have sorted the crab, chopped bait, made coffee, cooked etc all while in the sling. You are right, he just doesn't have the heart of a fisherman and sadly, feels like, and will be treated like, an outcast because of it by his family. I'm in Alaska and have fished.
