@Adam Neely I HAVE TO TALK TO YOU! I spoke to Yogev about this when his “gravity centers” video came out (we did a Zoom). I wrote my Master’s thesis in 1999 about something I called “Ampersand Rhythms” and what you’re doing in this video is bumping RIGHT up against my own rhythmic shenanigans in some super awesome ways - I feel like you’d really enjoy hearing a perspective (and some music) that is just a fraction of a degree different! I know it’s kind of absurd to say “hey let’s chat” to an internet superstar such as yourself, but when there are rad new rhythmic techniques to be shared, it’s worth a shot - plus, Yogev was interested enough to respond 😅 Let me know and I’ll be happy to give more details.
Not his fault the Balkans produced a rich tradition of folk music with loads of awesome rhythmic patterns (and documented it better than other families of musical traditions with awesome rhythmic features like those found across West Africa, for one example among many)
@@TAP7aI’m glad you mentioned west African music because a lot of these rhythmic devices are very common here, for as novel as they feel to the average listener of western music. I honestly think it’s so cool that they’re picking up steam elsewhere in the world, whether they got inspired by the balkans or by the west Africans
The Sungazer process: 1) Listen to the song 2) Watch Adam's video to find out how you're "supposed" to listen to it More seriously, I'm so happy to see you guys working with Yogev! I wish your shows could come out as far as New Zealand :(
Dancer here, specialising in House Dance, but I also love to experiment and dance to non-4/4 music like Dave Brubeck's and Sungazer's stuff. Gonna bring this to the next session and blow some minds haha
If you really want to push yourself, check out Victoria mentioned here. Been obsessed with just about everything both Josh De La Victoria and Matt Gartska touch
I just discovered Yogev Gabay after getting into Meshuggah and wanting someone to explain their rhythms in a more mortal-friendly way, and Yogev has been an absolute GODSEND. Cannot recommend his channel enough, if you are even remotely interested in wonderfully wacky rhythmic hijinx then he's a must-watch.
There’s a Swedish dance called the short-3rd-beat Polska. It’s counted in 3/4, but the last beat is (roughly, but with some variation) 66% as long as the first two. And those two long beats are (usually) divided evenly in two, and the short last beat is (often) divided into 3. It’s so wonky. I love that pulse melting and nested tuplet shit exists in folk music.
@@JrgenHelland00 I was taught that if you don’t count it in 3, you’re feeling it wrong, so I think this means Swedish folk musicians are, in fact, nerds lol.
The amount of musical talent on this tour is outrageous. Jared is never not insanely impressive. The new Shubh tracks are absolutely killer, so that NYC show will be amazing. Also, thanks for introducing me to Portraits!
pulse morphing is my favorite thing i've heard tigran do bc he does it so effortlessly. Yogevs breakdown of the last section of Vardavar broke my mind at the time. (edit: this was in David Bruce's video the Rhythms of Tigran Hamasyan.) a good exercise to learn to feel this is to try and fit a familiar-feeling 4 subdivisions in place of some triplets. check out the track dovetail nicely by the bad plus and peep the drums
It looks pretty damned busy. I live in Oslo. I wonder why the tour starts with Oslo. Norway's usually not the first country on anyone's itinerary. I'm on the fence about buying a ticket.
To me Sungazzer is morphing into a most incredible, important group. If you had been doing this in the 70’s - 90’s you would have been a mega force. I love your version of Jazz Fusion because you incorporate beautiful melodies into syncopated funk and serious rock and eloquent jazz. You are amongst the best if not the best n sophisticated music - with a groove! I love your music and all good things to you and the band. 🎉
Josh is absolutely the man. Can't get enough of his playing, and it has led me to your music as well! Looking forward to seeing you guys in Atlanta next year!
I feel so honored that our tiny little Netherlands gets 3 shows. Last year was amazing, I'm sure next year will be no different. Gonna drum up all my friends.
That is an absolutely insane tour schedule. Given all you've shown us of the unglamorous life of touring with a new city nearly every day, you must absolutely love getting to play to an audience to go for a tour this lengthy! Best of luck and enjoy! Looking forward to catching you at the Chicago show.
got super happy when i saw sungazer is out on tour, got devastated when i saw that you played in my hometown 5 days ago and i missed it.... gad damnit :(
Yogev is popping up everywhere now day and I'm so here for it. He did the Freak guitar camp with Mattias Ia Eklund this summer and was crowned the "crown prince of konnakol". Great to see that he gets the rounds and is working together with so many of my/our favorite artists and bands. Can't wait for the Gothenburg show
Great video! I thought you were going to mention Rudresh Mahanthappa and Vijay Iyer in the references to people playing with these pulse-shifting and morphing ideas for a while, Rudresh's Black Water album has a lot of that. But, in Brazil, Hermeto Pascoal has been doing that for a pretty long while, at least since the 80s, with things like 10 notes over a 7/8 samba, with six triplets and four dotted eights (sort of) stretching to cover the bar, for example.
God, this style of jazz has been my favorite new discovery of 2024, saw a video that referenced "System" by Brotherly, I've been hooked trying to find more! Definitely giving you guys a follow, looking forward to the album!!!
Yogev absolutely rules…!! His visual descriptions of rhythm was a big influence on my analysis of Rush's LIMELIGHT. Btw love Cool 7… first listen I thought it was a wonky 5 then when I listened without trying to analyze I recognized the 7 effortlessly. Crazy!
Ahh! You mentioned 6 on the bottom of a time signature! The partner I went to your show with didn’t believe me at first when I mentioned having some 2/3 or 5/6 pieces in my classical training. And I explained them more or less like you did there, as a way to have triplets be written “regularised”! But in the back of my head I kind of doubted my memory because I don’t have my books anymore. Yay, validation! And I have the term “irrational time signature” finally - I knew it wasn’t “odd” bc that’s just for uncommon regular ones.
Honestly really stoked to see you guys when you come to PHX. Been watching you for years, and you have influenced and inspired much of my writing in my band.
