    Hello Martine!
    Thanks for this informative video.
You recently made a video about making an oboe reed. I noticed that you use the European scraping. Now I have a question regarding European and American scraping.
Is there a playful difference between the two scrapings? I know there are two more. Have you already gained experience with it or have you only played the European Schabung for more than 20 years?
And how many hours a day do you practice?
Sorry, but there are a few questions. Thank you for your hard work and the great videos you make. Greetings Tanja

Hi Tanja, thanks for you comment.
I have always played on the so called European scrape based on the German method with some tweaks of my own. There are many ways to do it.
The US method is quite different but at the end there is not so much playable difference, I can pretty much sound the way I sound because I will make the Reed suit me. I prefer the European for many reasons myself partly because i know it better but also comparing for me personally it's better.
When I don't have orchestra rehearsal/concerts i would practice for about 2-3 hours.

There needs to be a follow up video on making your reeds last longer please. I am having some success rotating between a few reeds, so that they rest and dry out between uses....

Hello! Would you consider making a video about the oboe key adjustments? Just the easy adjustments you can make by yourself when there is a leak of air that is making our notes hard to play. Thank you!

Thanks for you comment, I definitely would consider it if there is enough interest in it.

"Do oboe players go crazy" I could go with a long list here, starting with some common relatives :D :D :D

Q: Is it true oboe players go crazy?
A: No. You have to be crazy to begin with.

Maybe the right question is Why they go crazy... Probably because they play a note (A note;P) so many times...and never hear the right response from the others :D
And, speaking of tuning, if I remember correct, the oboe gives us the La, not only because of his thembre, but also something about some neutral aspects of its overtones...But these are just old school memories, so who knows......:)
btw Cheers, Marine, keep it up! 👏👌🤘

Can you play oboe with no teeth, or with dentures

    • @BeyondOboe
      @BeyondOboe  6 місяців тому

If I had to guess I would imagine that it would be better with dentures. Without teeth probably would be more difficult to support the reed. I don't have any experience in those scenarios and can't be sure.

Another question: Does exist the perfect (and eternal) reed? 😅

Legends say it does but somehow noone seems to have found it yet. The quest continues!

In 1976 I made a great reed. it had purple thread and I played the mozart oboe quartet on it. Once I made a great english horn reed, scraped in rehearsal. Also with purple thread. maybe that is the secret?????? find your color for thread? Mostly I play on crap and do my best to make it work. but two good reeds in 40 some years is not a good average. And the sad truth is they don't last long anyway so even if you have a perfect reed it won't be with you that long. So get used to it. Then there are those strange oboists who love to make reeds.
