When our albinos spawned, years ago, it was easier to take out the fish instead of the eggs. And it was a crazy amount that hatched and survived. They are super cute little suckers! Congrats!
Yep, that is also a good way to do it. Mine spawned in a 75 gallon, so I removed them because I like to start fry in smaller containers so it is easier to keep food in front of them and I did not want to dedicate an entire 75 to the batch of fry. But removing the adults works well too if one has the tank space.

I get so many eggs and never knew what to do! Very informative video, thank you!! I've gotten maybe 15 babies (who grew to full size) out of thousands of eggs just by leaving them in my tank over the past few years. Next time they have eggs, I'm trying this!
My corydoras just laid eggs. The eggs are all over the glass and plants so I hope some survive. I do not have the means to incubate them, but if I see babies, I will buy baby food.
This was very useful, I have about 75 at 3 weeks old. I need to move to a bigger tank or separate clusters in multi 10,s that I have going on. What do you think ?
The part where you separated the bad from the good. I just wanna add to that. People say "fungus can't spread and infect other eggs" which as far as I know, it cant. BUT, as the fungus grows it clings onto other eggs and minimises movement and their ability to eat etc. So while the fungus doesn't appear to eat at other eggs/hatchlings, it definitely wraps around them and causes death.
Very cool video than that but just thought I’d mention that using Malachite green And loading them in a container in the same tank they were hatched in with an air stone work perfectly. All I would do is once or twice a day move the container around so the eggs would keep from Growing fungus.. With that combination I have had a hundred percent success every time they bread. And if you ever get an opportunity, try throwing in a piece of PVC pipe that’s cut in half… They like to lay eggs on that and make it very easy to remove them. And PS… The fungus will spread to the other eggs ..I learned that the hard way On the first batch!
Am I correct in saying that you do not need an airstone or heater? I screwed up I think as I didnt put my eggs in a seperate container, but instead put them in a breeder box in the tank that their parents and some other small fish are in. So I’ll be following this video step by step and hopefully I’ll have some survivors! Is there a certain water you recommend using when you change out their water so frequently?
Thank you so much I had no idea what they were when I saw them I had to Google them and finally figured out why my little albino girl was on the glass on the front of the tank she laid 3 clutches of eggs it blew my mind and had to go and get a round tank at Walmart which I rinsed out thoroughly don't have a bubbler to put in this tank for now hopefully there will hold out for a few days with just some plants in there I do have a very inexpensive heater unfortunately it does not allow you to control the temperature
My albino corys started spawning 3 days ago. They only had 10 eggs spread around random places. Is something wrong with them to cause them to only have 10 eggs?
Will they still live without moving them? My fish are laying eggs like crazy but I haven’t seen any fry in the tank yet we do have a couple ornaments that can hide it but I’m not sure if the will?
They eat things that are rotting to prevent pathogens from thriving. They filter poop that still has unprocessed proteins in it to reduce ammonia spike. Their bodies often nitrify what they eat down to nitrite or even nitrate so their poop hardly produces ammonia.
Some will, some won't. There are 9 distinct lineages of Corys. Those from the same lineage are likely to hybridize. As the lineages get more distant, the likelihood drops.
Hey I really liked the video and that is how I am going to do my next spawn of eggs. I haven’t had a successful hatch from my eggs yet and I am excited to try this! I just had another question, when you have the eggs in the container, do you have an air stone or anything moving the water around in the container or not?
How much do you feed them? I have baby albino corys (got them from the pet store) and they aren’t even an inch. Should I be feeding them 2-3 times a day? Is that over feeding?
I just lost all the fry from the last lot of eggs from my oldest bronze corydoras. It was a massive amount and she was huge. The next day after spawning she was dead. One of my housemates (none were brave enough to admit it as they saw how aggro I was) unplugged the heater and air pump to my tank where I hatch/raise my fry to use the outlet and did not plug it back in. We are in spring here, but the overnight cold is still a bit chilly ... all dead. Dan quick question how long do you grow them out for before you feel they are safe to be added to the adult population?
Oh, Melody, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your clutch and your female! To answer your question, it all depends on how much you feed them. When I grown the fry with constant livefood, they are big enough to go in with the breeders in 3-4 weeks. Double or triple that if they are fed commercial foods or are fed less frequently.
What if you just leave them on the glass? I’m not super interested in breeding them but if a few eggs hatch I would be ok with it. Will they still hatch? Mine laid like 50 today for the first time and my female bettas have no interest in them so I don’t think they’ll get eaten. I don’t really have anywhere to incubate them and I don’t really want like 50 Corys either!
great video what is the brown stuff along the bottom and do the cory cats eat it, I just hatched about 30 cory cats and learning how to raise and care for them your video has helped thanks
We got a 30 gallon tank and we have been in the booting up phase ( plants + substrate and let it sit for 2 weeks). We added good bacteria and have a sand substrate. So we want to get corydora's first. Introducing them to be the first fish in there ( I do have 1 assasin snail in there to deal with the snails that came with the plants). I reckon we might buy like 10? But if we leave those for a week or two before we introduce new fish (maybe neon tetra's) you reckon they can breed? And do we HAVE to take the fry out in order for them to survive at all? We have nice plant shelter (wood + a vern or smth on it). and more plants across the aqarium. Kinda want to know if they can just reproduce and have few fry (the fittest) survive without removing them from the tank
They do grow fast! That is one think I love about these corys...by the time they absorb their yolk sac and have become free swimming, they are pretty big and easy to raise. Makes it a cinch to grow them up quickly.
I know this is an old video but hopefully I'll get a reply. I'm new to the hobby and I have seen those floating plants you have in your 5 1/2 gallon and 30 gallon breeder tank that have the long roots but can't seem to figure out what they are. Hopefully you can help me out?
Start a siphon with an airline. Keep the airline near the card. Have the other end of the airline pass through fish net that is sitting on the rim of a bucket. The net will hold the eggs...
Hello Tina, Thanks for the question. The truth is, I have no idea. I've never tried it and I don't know anyone who has, so I'm afraid I can't answer your question. But thanks for asking anyway! Best, Dan
i've just had an albino and a bronze cory cross-breed in my tank. they laid numerous patches of eggs along the aquarium but they didn't go brown after the 24 hours that they're supposed to, and ended up just getting eaten. i was pretty gutted but after looking online i found that cross-breeding them isn't good for the hobby, but it didn't state if the spawns are ever successful
I keep mine in the mid-70's F. Whatever temps the parents spawn in will probably be just fine for the eggs (otherwise, they would not spawn at those temps).
Mine has breed 6 the other day I didn't even take out the eggs I has plenty off plants I am worried off overcrowding max my tank takes 30 is now 22 this year had 11 born how do i stop the breeding will i have to give some away or the mother RSVP
I breed bronze and albino cory’s here’s a little trick I do that most don’t lol I used aquarium glue to glue a suction cup to the outside bottom of a small square tub and stuck it to one end of their tank wedged in a corner of the tank that way the lay their eggs inside the tub and have a ledge to lay on then I Just remove the tub and the eggs will have been laid inside the tub so I don’t have to scrape them off and risk hurting the eggs :) may just be me lol 😂
Do you take the eggs out as soon as you notice them or do they need time in the aquarium to be fertilized or something? I found eggs in my aquarium and I want them to do well but I don't know if I should wait to remove them
Harry, Thanks for the query. I heat the entire fish room with a furnace, so I don't have to put individual heaters in my aquariums or my hatching containers. Here's a tour so you can get a feel for the room if you want: ua-cam.com/video/G6l-NG2_qCM/v-deo.html
What do you do with the little containers that the eggs are in? You said you incubate them? Hiw do you keep them warm? My females are laying in my aquarium right now, but I don't have an extra tank set up as of right now, help lol
Howdy Brittany, I guess the term "incubate" can be misleading. For fish, it does not mean to keep them warmer than the tank environment. It really just means to care for them until they hatch. I just set the egg container on a shelf in the fish room and, since I keep the room at aquarium temps, it keeps the eggs at the same temperature as the aquarium water, give or take a couple of degrees. The eggs sink to the bottom and tend to stick to each other in a mass. To change the water, I just slowly pour out all the water I can without pouring out the eggs. If you are concerned about the eggs spilling out, you can pour the water through a sieve or a clean net so they can't slip down the drain.
Great video Dan! I believe in another video you mentioned you also use black worms to cycle your tanks. I can’t find a video on how you culture black worms, do you have any advice or information on them?
Howdy Francesco, I culture them in a bare bottom aquarium with a sponge filter. I use a 20 long or a 30 breeder, but you can use whatever you have available. I keep them just like fish with water changes and floating plants. I feed them sinking fish food with a mix of protien and veggies...algea wafers work great. I also feed Repashy, sinking pellets, bananas, boiled pumpkin, and other random table scraps. I stick food that wants to float with a stainless steel fork so it stays down with the worms. If you put a course matalla matt on the bottom of 1/4 or so of the aquarium, the worms will congregate in the matt and you can remove the matt and rinse it in fresh water to collect them.
Dans Fish Thanks so much for the info! I’ve heard the worms need to be physically broken apart to get them to multiply. Do you stir up the substrate to help with that?
Yep, audigex, that is a baby cory. I got one that hatched out in the fungused egg container. That's why I don't just throw those eggs away...every now and then an egg that I think is bad hatches. Bonus hatch!!!
So they hatch in 72 hours the reason I ask is because I did a total water change with cold water bye accident and the next day my Cory started laying eggs all over the glass and then she and the male ate them. So I poured maybe a liter of cold water back in there and she laid eggs again literally the next day. so I did what you said, and I pulled them out and put them in a little plastic bowl sort of like yours
I’ve got glofish fry that just hatched what should I do to keep them alive what do they eat I’ve got moss balls. But don’t know what els to feed them pretty new to the hobby
Hello Leader...sorry for the HUGE delay in responding. Baby glofish fry (I'm assuming danios, tetras, or tiger barbs) all eat infusoria, rotifers, or paramecium at the start of their life. You can also try finely powdered foods, like 5-50 micron size Golden Pearls...some folks report good success that way. Personally, the little live foods have always worked best for me.
Hello James, Yes, I remove the eggs because the parents will eat any fry they can catch. I like both peroxide and methylene blue. I think they both work well. I use peroxide because it is cheep, you can buy it anywhere, and it does not stain everything it touches blue for the rest of eternity :)
Hydrogen peroxide is probably available in the selfcare or pharmacy section of your supermarket. YOu might be able to find it on Amazon.com or your country's version of it. If you can't find it or meth blue, you can still hatch the eggs. I would recommend some kind of flow-through system to keep the eggs clean. Something like this: www.amazon.com/Marina-Hang-On-Breeding-Box-Large/dp/B005QRDCP2/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=marineland+breeder+box&qid=1567808012&s=gateway&sr=8-2

Oh my god! I would legitimately move out 🙈
What if you just leave them on the glass? I’m not super interested in breeding them but if a few eggs hatch I would be ok with it. Will they still hatch? Mine laid like 50 today for the first time and my female bettas have no interest in them so I don’t think they’ll get eaten. I don’t really have anywhere to incubate them and I don’t really want like 50
Corys either!
great video what is the brown stuff along the bottom and do the cory cats eat it, I just hatched about 30 cory cats and learning how to raise and care for them your video has helped thanks
The brown on the bottom is just algea and mulm. The cats sift through it for particles of food. They would probably prefer fine sand given the choice.
Hey, how old is the parents fish so that they can lay eggs??
It has more to do with size than age. At about 1.5" or so, they will begin to breed reliability
The shrimp wont eat te fry? Soneone said snails and shrimp will eat the eggs and fry?
How many drops of peroxide per litre exactly ?
I used this method worked great. I have too many now lol 😂
Great video, thanks for sharing your experience
You got it, Suzie!
hi, how often do you have to change the water in a day?
Kinda want to know if they can just reproduce and have few fry (the fittest) survive without removing them from the tank
nice i got peppered corydora fry.get vid. they grow fast when fed right
They do grow fast! That is one think I love about these corys...by the time they absorb their yolk sac and have become free swimming, they are pretty big and easy to raise. Makes it a cinch to grow them up quickly.
out of curiosity, why do you need to change the water so often a day?
Because I keep a LOT of fish in my aquariums, so I have to keep their tanks clean.
Do u use tap or tank water for water changes?
I know this is an old video but hopefully I'll get a reply. I'm new to the hobby and I have seen those floating plants you have in your 5 1/2 gallon and 30 gallon breeder tank that have the long roots but can't seem to figure out what they are. Hopefully you can help me out?
Try water lettus, i am new too... Haha
do you just keep the eggs in those jars? no heater or filter ?? I'm a newbie at breeding corys
Start a siphon with an airline. Keep the airline near the card. Have the other end of the airline pass through fish net that is sitting on the rim of a bucket. The net will hold the eggs...
That would work.
do you think that a panda cory and albino cory would be able to have a successful spawn being different type of cory?
Hello Tina,
Thanks for the question. The truth is, I have no idea. I've never tried it and I don't know anyone who has, so I'm afraid I can't answer your question. But thanks for asking anyway!
Best,
Dan
i've just had an albino and a bronze cory cross-breed in my tank. they laid numerous patches of eggs along the aquarium but they didn't go brown after the 24 hours that they're supposed to, and ended up just getting eaten. i was pretty gutted but after looking online i found that cross-breeding them isn't good for the hobby, but it didn't state if the spawns are ever successful
its not possible as they are from different lines. you can find the crossbreed sheet for corydoras online ;)
A lot of them do crossbreed but its looked Down on in the hobby for several reasons.
M Aquatics yeh I read the same online, they’ve laid numerous batches of eggs since and I’ve just let them get eaten
What temperature should water be for those eggs???
I keep mine in the mid-70's F. Whatever temps the parents spawn in will probably be just fine for the eggs (otherwise, they would not spawn at those temps).
Thanks. I got like 200 5 day old albino in my hang on breeder.
Awesome! I hope you raise a nice batch!
Great video Dan. Mine just spawned for the first time 😁
Congrats! I hope you raise up a big batch...they are so much fun to watch grow.
Underrated project =(
I just love the albino corydoras, I know they are one of the more common corys on the market, but they just pop with they’re bright color🙂
I'm so glad you brought up the cherry shrimp. I have a cherry tank with mystery snails and cory. I was curious if the shrimp would eat the fry
Shimp, IME, are great "nurses" for eggs and fry.
@@DansFish snails ended up being the hungry ones. I removed the snails and will definitely try again!!
@@turo_no_bull good to know! I am usually a mystery snail person but recently got corys and they’re spawning. Time to get shrimp!
Collecting eggs manually, to change water 100% several times a day - at what price do you sell the fish? Can you get some income from it ???
I don't really make money breeding fish...just a fun part of the hobby for me. But people DO make money doing it...it definitely can be done for $$$
Mine has breed 6 the other day I didn't even take out the eggs I has plenty off plants I am worried off overcrowding max my tank takes 30 is now 22 this year had 11 born how do i stop the breeding will i have to give some away or the mother RSVP
Just the video i needed
Glad to hear it!
Do you take the eggs out as soon as you notice them or do they need time in the aquarium to be fertilized or something? I found eggs in my aquarium and I want them to do well but I don't know if I should wait to remove them
I take them out as soon as they are done spawning. By then, they are generally hardened up and can handle the handling.
Great info as always -- thanks!
I loved this video!
I like your plastic container hatching method but how do you maintain the heat in such a small qty of water?
Harry,
Thanks for the query. I heat the entire fish room with a furnace, so I don't have to put individual heaters in my aquariums or my hatching containers. Here's a tour so you can get a feel for the room if you want: ua-cam.com/video/G6l-NG2_qCM/v-deo.html
Dans Fish - very interesting Dan - many thanks - I will try it
:)
What do you do with the little containers that the eggs are in? You said you incubate them? Hiw do you keep them warm? My females are laying in my aquarium right now, but I don't have an extra tank set up as of right now, help lol
Also how do you change the water without spilling the eggs out?
Howdy Brittany,
I guess the term "incubate" can be misleading.
What is the function hydrogen peroxide?
eggs dont need warm water??
How do you tell if your Cory’s are male or female?
Great video Dan! I believe in another video you mentioned you also use black worms to cycle your tanks. I can’t find a video on how you culture black worms, do you have any advice or information on them?
Howdy Francesco,
I culture them in a bare bottom aquarium with a sponge filter.
9:25 am I seeing a fry zipping around the outside of the "fungused eggs" pot? Or is that a reflection from something else in the fish room?
Yep, audigex, that is a baby cory. I got one that hatched out in the fungused egg container. That's why I don't just throw those eggs away...every now and then an egg that I think is bad hatches. Bonus hatch!!!
So cute 🥺
:)
Dan what are " scuds "?
I’ve never needed to change the water out 100% out everyday
But again
I hatch the fry in my shrimp tanks lol
I’ve got glofish fry that just hatched what should I do to keep them alive what do they eat I’ve got moss balls. But don’t know what els to feed them pretty new to the hobby
Hello Leader...sorry for the HUGE delay in responding. Baby glofish fry (I'm assuming danios, tetras, or tiger barbs) all eat infusoria, rotifers, or paramecium at the start of their life. You can also try finely powdered foods, like 5-50 micron size Golden Pearls...some folks report good success that way. Personally, the little live foods have always worked best for me.
Really good content Sir!!!
I guess you remove the eggs because the parents might eat the fry?
Also is peroxide better to use than Methylene blue?
Hello James, Yes, I remove the eggs because the parents will eat any fry they can catch. I like both peroxide and methylene blue. I think they both work well. I use peroxide because it is cheep, you can buy it anywhere, and it does not stain everything it touches blue for the rest of eternity :)
@@DansFish Thank you so much. How much peroxide would you suggest in a 20 gallon hatch out tank?
Hey Dan, not sure where/if I can get the peroxide and/or methylene blue (I live in AUS) do I need it for them to survive or will some still hatch???
Hydrogen peroxide is probably available in the selfcare or pharmacy section of your supermarket. YOu might be able to find it on Amazon.com or your country's version of it. If you can't find it or meth blue, you can still hatch the eggs. I would recommend some kind of flow-through system to keep the eggs clean. Something like this: www.amazon.com/Marina-Hang-On-Breeding-Box-Large/dp/B005QRDCP2/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=marineland+breeder+box&qid=1567808012&s=gateway&sr=8-2
