    Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

    Never done a warm up before painting and honestly that's such a good idea. Thank you, I've been watching a lot of your videos I'm new to painting with oil paints I mainly work with acrylics. It's so cool to see how you change and grow through your videos and it gives me hope that I'll some day get refined in my painting skills.

    I hate apples. Then I bite into one and remember that, I like apples.
    Just when I think your videos are good you make them even better!
    For me, the first 3 paintings I would probably take 20 minutes. I am still learning to mix and it still takes me some time to get to it right. I would assume that I would have mixed well enough by the third try to bring the time back down to 10 minutes and focus on the apple more rather than the mixing. So in a sense this helps also with mixing because you can see the change in the color over time getting closer to the actual apple. Well if you are not a master with color mixing like myself.

    Chris - congrats on getting your own Rosemary Co brush set! As an oil painting newbie, I appreciate how simple you made it. Per your suggestion, I started buying their brushes earlier this year and told them you had sent me. I have really enjoyed their brushes and am picking up one of your sets as a holiday gift. Loved your intro to oil painting course and hoping to jump into your drawing course soon.

    This is a great idea! Ive only done a few paintings as Im new to oil painting, or any painting. I seem to feel like I need to put aside a lot of time to get stuck into it, but this is an excellent way to practice when there isnt always a lot of time. I had been watching different youtube videos and reading about oils painting for about a year before I started about 2'ish months ago. Your videos have been very helpful, thank you!

    This is one of those exercises I've always wanted to do... I love relaxed "just paint it" exercises. Sometimes I just get so bummed down with not knowing what to paint or feeling as though I need to figure out some amazing painting when honestly I'm happy Just doing simpler things until I'm ready for something more. I honestly don't even know when I will go in that direction but instead of umming and ahhing about what to do... the more proactive thing to do is simply keep practicing... simple or not... I love your brush work here.. really well thought out colours, great application and a wonderful exercise I'd be happy to try... I have tried to make myself do like 6 portraits over several days/weeks but exercises like this seem to never work out for me. Doing 6...9... whatever it is.. apples sounds much more achievable. Are they basically life size?

    Hi Chris, I've watched a few of your videos but not all. I am wondering if you've done a video where you talk about what to do when the areas you've used too much medium doesn't dry and you can't seem to work over it. For example, I would do the thin to thick tip you mentioned. Once I get to the part where I'm using my linseed oil, and if I mess up my values in one area, I don't know how to make it dry faster so I can paint over it. I waited a day but doesn't seem to make a difference. I've tried to go over it with a color that I mixed with paint thinner (thinking it will help dry the area) but it just makes the entire area so thin! Can you help?

      A cheap desk lamp would work fine. You could also set solid color pieces of paper below your subject to play around with potential different colored bounce light of paper to subject. This could be place on you desk/table as you paint. Maybe take s couple photos with phone if you want digital references.

    I have a question.
    Why do u always paint a dark-ish layer/base before starting to paint?
    Does it make it any different from a plain white canvas?

    • @kikithebunny5182
      @kikithebunny5182 2 роки тому +1

      Its called toning your canvas, a white canvas can easily make you see your values too dark when they are actually dark ennough, this is where a toned canvas comes into play by helping you see values better and not misjudge them

    Just remember, people....if it were possible for everyone to paint, everyone would be good. This is a load of crap. Either you can paint or you can't. There is a small amount of theory that is required. Everything after that is dependent on your perception and small motor coordination. And if you don't have it, you never will...no matter how many exercises you engage in. Some people have talent. Most of you don't. Reality sucks. Enjoy your attempts.
