- A Kilkenny man is taking no chances and has erected his headstone at the grave where he will be buried.
75 year old Patrick Morrissey from Kilkenny has made the unusual decision to erect his own gravestone while he is still alive. Cathal O’Shannon travelled to meet the man who has his grave ready for the inevitable day.
Patrick Morrissey explains that he does not believe his sons would bother marking his grave with stone, even if he left them the money to do so.
A proud member of the Sinn Féin party from 1914 - 1921, many of his comrades from the time are now dead, so he cannot rely on them for a headstone either. So he decided to do it himself.
You’re getting old now Paddy I says, and the best thing you can do is to put up a memory stone to yourself before you get too old.
He saved for the headstone over a two-year period and a man in Carlow carved it for him. Patrick Morrissey is not at all worried that erecting the gravestone might be tempting fate and be responsible for his early demise. His philosophy on life is
Live as long as I can, die when I can’t help it.

He died 30/12/1979 aged 82 for anyone interested.
It's comforting to know that he got to use it after all.
Great video to watch, I was two months old when he died, RIP.
Thank you for the update.
I am very happy for the update
What is name of graveyard he is buried in??
I was just going to ask, thanks
a neighbor recently gifted my mom a plot he no longer wanted. she cried. she was so happy to “have a place to be put”
These old rural interviews are great. My head may be full of shit, but seeing stuff like this makes me think of the line in Leone's "Once upon a time in the west": "I'm too used to a quite, simple, country life".
Such quality content on this channel!!
I agree I love it 👍
100% one of THE great rabbit holes
Such a lovely man
A man in our old graveyard did this too ... He made his own .
Had to make sure it looked good i suppose
Where abouts?
Always thinking ahead of time, so you'll be ready when the time comes. Like a will.
I just love this youtube channel

My father has done exactly the same and he is still alive.
Live as long as I can and die when I cant help it.
Love that saying. What a great old fella
These people had a real wisdom about them. I heard an old lady outside a doctor's practise the other day saying to two younger women about how she was feeling "Ah, shur there's no cure for me now only the grave", she said. It just kind of struck me as being very profound.
I heard of this guy (my mother came from nearby). He died in 1979
thanks for the update
Looks to be Kilkenny
Grave at cathal Shannon is thomastown ?
@@madireland The grave is in Inistioge Co. Kilkenny. The fellow in the video was Patrick Morrissey and he resided in Ballyduff, a townsland between Thomastown and Inistioge. His wife died in 1977, while Patrick himself died two years later aged 82. It’s not that unusual to erect ones own headstone while still alive (my grandfather was in an unmarked grave for 80 years and finally got one as my father and aunt, both of advanced years chose to be interred there).
@@luvhart Next time I’m down there I’m going to visit his grave .. thanks for the update.
@@Discover-Ireland You really should...apart from the Grave, Inistioge is a very picturesque village (the movie Circle of Friends was filmed there).
Another great find CR. In parts of rural China some people still make their own coffins.
HPL: So do some in parts of Canada. My parents knew a young couple who lost a baby; they were financially bereft, as well as devastated for the loss of the little one who’d blessed their lives with so much joy. Members of the church what together the funeral and memorial service for them. My parents’ part was that they made and upholstered the coffin with naught but the finest materials, and the priest found them a plot that was a gift, so that they could at least do that one last beautiful act of respect and gratitude for the short time they’d all walked the earth together.
When I'm back home next im going to go to this man's grave.
He may still be alive because he did not trust the younger generation to do anything good so he may still be around complaining about the young ones.
A lovely programme
He must’ve really disliked his sons!
I absolutely love this channel. What a fantastic archive. Keep them coming
Fascinating. Thanks for posting. Great channel
he's no fan of the "young generation"
As Mark Twain said ‘every generation thinks they are smarter than the one before them, and wiser than the one after them’
Amazing...👌🏻
It's sad to think his children wouldn't give him a proper burial. I plan on burying my parents on my own land under 2 separate oak trees.
It's kind and thoughtful of you. Don't you you think however they may prefer to be buried next to eachother rather than seperate trees?
@@oldboy977 its what my mom and dad have wished for so it'll be okay. I'd like to be buried besides them under my own tree one day
If you want a job done right, do it yourself
Ha Ha that is very funny
He's probably turning in grave at the modern SF
I know my grandfather would.
@J T makes sense. Was being pushed in a commie direction at the time
@nova Try the IRSP
godamn i like the old irish grabations
was just thinking this re the video of the grave digger ;:-))) cool !
Top man😎
This is the most Irish thing I've ever seen. I can't explain why, but we've a weird affiliation with the subject of death - this shows it here.
Follow me if you like Irish cemeteries and graveyards
You had me by Man Errect-
Good man yourselfx
he has the young one's weighed up, not a one of them worth a shilling.
A man ahead of his time, A man who would not trust the younger generation because he thought that they were very lazy and did not care, A man who would not put trust in others, he might have been proven wrong but he could not take that chance. I hope this fine hardworking man is now at peace and having a heck of a great time walking around Heaven every day, meeting people who he has total trust in and Resting In Peace
My grandparents did this too. When they still had the money, they did it so their children wouldn’t have to.
In Death We Live. ☘🇮🇪
My neighbour put up a headstone for himself at 44 someone asks him what he was going to write on it he said his name followed by coming soon 😂😂😂
Love from a half Irish and dare I say English bloke bred and born in Australia 🇦🇺
Nice sons he had.
Did the engraver mean Inistioge instead of Inistigoe?
Making your own gravestone or coffin could be a great meditation or practice in stoicism.
I'm going to do a video on this story. Stay tuned 🍀
So are his parents interred in the grave before him....god rest them
My gravestone will read. “I’m coming home with you.”
What a fine man. He did not have much faith in his offspring though!
0:42 That's prett sad.
comrades uhoh
bye . .
Erected by himself
But it's Inistioge, not Inistigoe! Whoops. I was there in 2019, and thought it one of the prettiest towns in Ireland.
Old headstones crumble and are forgotten..
Not if they’re made of granite.
@@johnfury6481 even then they do.
thats the most irish thing anyones ever done...
I hope his kids never saw this lol
Can’t trust the young generation that is in the Sinn Féin party now.
They are all commies at this point.
His Sinn fein is fianna fail/gael today
@@russianbot1420
I have no love lost for modern SF. Saying they're commies is just fucking thick.
The woke party. They don't believe in Ireland or her traditions
@@ropaul8006 They are just typical globalist puppets.
Kinda sad. This urge probably stems from severe poverty. There would be some inherited memory of relatives dying in mass graves during famines. That's whats driving him.
I wonder if you’re referring to the planned genocide that was administered to the Irish population in the mid 1800 s , and then taught in schools throughout the land , thanks to a complicit clergy, as a massive shortage of food through drought.
@@oooofmadonne5131 it's strange that the dude assumes this "old video" is THE Famine like c'mon dude it's the 1970's not the 1800's
was that gay byrne?
No the late great Cathall O, Shannon.
Pity he couldn't spell the word 'Féin' on the gravestone....!!!
It is spelt right
@@andrewdavy9921 Féin. Not 'fein'. There is a fada.
I wouldn’t be grousing about someone who was actually there doing the fighting, lad.
@@johnfury6481 I wasn't. It is a simple matter of correct spelling with the correct accents.
I don't understand . Who was patrick who was born in 1914-21? A bit confusing . Oh he was a member of the party at that time I think 👍
Well done. The penny dropped 😜
@@irishmade8136 I'm a bit slow on the uptake 😂
No he died aged 7
@@mustertherohirrim7315 Dident we all.
Seek help.
For the soul there is neither birth nor death nor having once been does it ever cease to be.... A marking stone only marks the bones of one who is no longer there so it's a waste of time and money
