Is this the Lichfield and Hatherton canal system ?
Wow I envy the people of Britain being able to visit and cruise on the canals. We have lots of waterways and streams here in western Pennsylvania but none that match the peaceful beauty or history of Britain's narrow canals. Hooray for all the volunteers who are working to preserve these treasures!
Look around we actually have canals all over the eastern US
We have some canals in Eastern Ontario, but...not enough of them ?
Much of Pennsylvania is too mountainous for canals to be profitable. Not that they didn't build them, but there were too many locks, which meant too many lock-keepers and infrastructure.
To actually cross the state, one had to take a boat which could be disassembled into halves, put on an inclined railway system, and hauled over a mountain! Railways soon put the Western Pennsylvania canals out of business. IIRC, a couple in the east were flatter and hauled coal to New York City area, so they survived for many years.
Buy land and build your own canal 😃
You colonist have the Erie canal and the susquehanna river.
The answers as to why it's being done is brilliant. Having a quiet place to get away from the hectic world and just walk with nature is something so many people don't have quick access to now adays. We live next to a waterway canal here in Canada. And going for along along the canal is a daily thing we do as its so relaxing for the body and mind.
Yes! Absolutely 😊
Yes !
Yes! And with water brings habitat and food for wildlife.
One of my favorite attributes of this channel is the way you follow up exactly what you said you'd follow up. I know it seems simple, but that is not always so with some presenters. Appropriate and nicely done.
😀
Amazing job by the volunteers, the Trust, and the paid contractors working on this project. They need to be proud of their persistence :) Thanks, David, for continuing to report on the work, and thanks also to ABNB for sponsoring you. Their support of this channel is appreciated, even from Seattle :)
Thank you
I was so impressed by the LHCRT in your 2019 video I became a member although I live two hundred miles away in Scotland. Thanks for the update!
Great to hear!
Thanks Les! ❤
Same!
Crumbs. What an undertaking. The mind boggles. l hope l am still around to see it finished. l am 80 so it's in the balance!
The bridge done 1997, they'll never get under the a road for 30years, rip
Restoration of any canal is always to be applauded.
The engineering challenge on this one sends me chivers.
Huge respect to all those involved trying to achieve this aim.
The Wey and Arun canal is also stuttering with cost and engineering challenges.
Thank you.
omg, the scale is staggering. What is quite remarkable is that many of the volanteers will never see the end result, best wishes to them. I am going to visit family in wolverhampton and will try to get along to see.
Inspiring that the value of the canals is being recognized and the system is growing again
Loved seeing this follow-up! Considering we had Covid and severe economic downturns impact all our lives in harsh ways for nearly 2+ years, it looks like they are doing as well as can be expected! You Brits are such an inspiration for the funding and volunteer energy you jointly muster for projects such as this. I doubt a canal would get that kind of support here in the US! Well done you all! ❤
Thank you.
Good with a comprehensive update. I've been watching their channel from time to time since your previous video, particularly during the pandemic. Very impressive project!
Thanks David for another great Litchfield canal restoration video.. the canal has come along way due to the hard work of everyone involved, so many complicated issues, going underneath two major roads and railroad.. let alone building several new locks.. what a project! Watching progress from Missouri USA.. Cheers David and the CRT , volunteers..
Thanks, David for the update on this mammoth Job . Good to see such amazing progress over what can only be described as difficult years .Hats off to all who made this possible. 👍
My pleasure!
Thank you from us!
Making a beautiful countryside even more beautiful. What a wonderful project. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
I LOVE that there are people THIS passionate to work like this to restore history. I love this. Good for them!
I hope the folk that decided to reduce the gov funding of the CRT are watching this.
David, I take my hat off to you for doing your bit to help the folk, who have not given that bad news a second thought, the oppertunity visualise what the money is spent on and to better understand the importance of the funding CRT receive.
People will miss em when they're gone.
But most of all I would like to say well done and a huge thank you to each and every volunteer. Salt of the earth folk no mistake.
❤❤❤
Thanks David, another professionally presented and informative video, presenting the waterways in a positive and interesting way…
I love your updates. I loved going on Canal boats. You see things you can't see anyplace else and it's peaceful.
Thank you
I imagine that the vegetation growing in the dug areas might also be somewhat beneficial in preventing erosion, in addition to the benefits to wildlife.
David, thank you for the update. I remember your earlier video on this daunting project. Congratulations to the hard-working volunteers and the organizers!
Thank you.
Such a very interesting video, great work That's being Done on that stretch of old canal.😊
17.08 minutes....................very interesting and if only it was as quick and easy to actually do as it was to describe so eloquently ( even allowing for travel, filming and editing time! ). There are massive hurdles to overcome, best of British to them all.
If someone announces that a canal is going to be cut (or an existing one widened) to connect the north and south networks for ALL boats, narrowboats and widebeams, I’ll be there with a pick and shovel!
Fascinating, and helps me better understand the progress on my local canal. Considering what I hear about it, it's evidently in a better state than appearances imply! :)
My sympathies to Christine Bull on the loss of opportunities for bonfires! ;)
What an unbelievable project. Fortitude at its best.
A monumental project indeed… very impressive. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent video, David! Patience will see progress. 😎❤️❤️🥰
I hope so!
@@CruisingTheCut ❤️
Brilliant effort , an absolutely massive project but definitely a case of where there’s a will there’s a way 😄😄😄 great vlog as always David, thank you!
I'm really pleased to see an update, and that you're going to keep us all informed as to future progress.
David thank you for the update on the canal restoration. Learning so much from your videos about the canals. Happy Cruising.
Water and greenery connect people, so a new canal will contribute to this.
A nice connection for narrow boaters.
Wanted to thank you for taking the time to produce these videos... Where I live we don't have anything like the narrow boat. Was in Wales (for the first time) a couple of weeks ago and managed to visit the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and immediately thought of you. Even got brave enough to walk part way out on the aqueduct, truly amazing!!! Keep 'em coming.
Of all the canal places to visit, that's the perfect one!
Really well scripted and easy to follow - many thanks. Well done to all involved.
Hard to believe it's been nearly four years since your first video about this project, David. Thanks for bringing us up to date and good luck to all involved in this very worthwhile undertaking!
Thank you!
Brilliant overview David…..it’s so nice to see the canals being restored …gives you a glow
Thanks David, very interesting (if frustrating! - if only there was a canal fairy...).
A lot has been done in 4 years - much more than I would have thought - but there's still so much to do. I wonder what a realistic finish date would be? Given the work still outstanding, especially all the locks and bridges, it must be decades, rather than years - especially regarding the railway and major road bridges. We know from your other restoration videos that each of these projects can take years, just to get the planning and fund-raising sorted out, never mind the actual construction. It's a sobering thought that many of the voluteers involved are unlikely to see the project completed. Under those circumstances, it's wonderful to see their dedication and determination. Where would we be without people like this?
Thank you. If we can get more funding like the grants we've had for Darnford Moors, it could be within ten years. 🤞
There is a canal fairy - he is called David Suchet.
And several other faeries like me buy a monthly lottery ticket. xxx
Is that ten year time frame due to a lack of laborers, equipment? Or funding ? I would love you look into this freeing funding to try and help get this project finish so the new canal can be done it to use sooner than later as I’m looking at buying my first narrowboat and retiring to it from my sailboat. Thanks!
Thanks for that update - the timelapse car trip ties the whole together very well and the double-jointed digger is a thing of wonder - am reminded of the way the DLR route was driven under Platforms 3 and 4 of Lewisham station without closure of the working railway \m/
Thanks 👍
Thank you David for the good overview of the canal restoration progress. The average person probably assumes canal restorations are just a simple matter of removing soil from the canals and you are good to go. As your video has shown, it is much more complicated than that. With all the overtopping of the canals by more modern infrastructures, even restoration planning needs to be revised at times when unforseen problems are discovered. Given the restoration is primarily privately funded and supported by volunteer efforts plus, given the wonderful canal environment, this is a tremendous asset and testimony to the British people! I am envious and wish we had the same thing in the US.
Thank you!
As someone who lives in Lichfield, Peter at 9:30 is right. There is a depressing lack of nice paths/walks in and around Lichfield, so having at least somewhere nice to walk will be a massive improvement! Something that has always been very annoying as both Whittington and Burntwood have no lack of lovely walks and they are only a few miles away on either side.
Thanks for the update. Wishing all the best to the volunteers involved with this project. Hope they find continued success in the future. Be well and stay safe.
I hope so too!
Thank you!
This was fascinating. Thank you. Can't wait for updates. Good luck to all involved, and Thank You.
Appreciate the update! Good to see they are still making headway👍👍
Thank you.
Thanks David. Great work being done. It will be interesting to see how they tunnel through the embankment with trains passing over it. Such a shame they couldn't put in a long enough bridge to allow the canal to pass under it next to the road. I hope the cost of this will not be extortionate.
I hope so too
Great video, thanks for the update. A truly inspirational team of volunteers!
Thank you!
Glad there are volunteers taking on such big projects 🙂
They've done very good considering the challenges of the last 31/2 years.
Thank you!
Thank you for the update ... seeing the change over time is always interesting.
Very Interesting update....dealing with a ton of serious concerns and engineering difficulties...and still slowly prevailing.... hats off to all the volunteers, as they deserve some recognition.....all that I have seen accomplished by them through your videos is amazing.....thanks Mr David for continuing to document the progress....it's really not just shoveling a small trench is it ?!?!
Thank you!
Thank you David for such an informative and well produced update. 👍😀
So nice of you 😀
Here in New England, it is Litchfield, CT USA. No canals. A pretty famous road race that happens every year. It brings in runners from around the world. Home of the Possum Queen Foundation, that raises money for folks that have financial issues from medical problems they have experienced.
Thanks for the update David... it does look like it's coming along... slow at times, but still always forward... great episode! Cheers from Tennessee, USA
Thanks 👍
Wow! How neat to see how it's constructed. The patterned brickwork on the upper border is beautiful and what a nice surprise it will be to have that along part of the canal. LOL, love the Trust Pyromaniac lady ❤
What amazing dedication by all those involved.
Appreciate the updates, I really enjoy the restoration videos.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for that Dave, so informative, interesting and very well articulated, you could do it for a living!. My wifes family comes from that area and we have been through Lichfield several times on our visits back to England over the last 20 years, getting on a tad now,[80 next birthday], so we will never come back again but thanks to you and others we can keep up with whats happening in that area, cheers mate, keep doing your thing.
Will do!
Wow, given the whole "you know what" worldwide issue that happened... there's been a LOT of fantastic work been done! Congrats to all involved, no matter how small! Cheers David for a fantastic video update!
Thank you!
Thank you for the update. It's great to see the passion people have bettering the things they love.
Thanks m8, updates good. You and the Litchfield are doin well. Pleased as!
Ah many thanks Greg, always appreciate you viewing as you know 👍👍
Super mini documentary. So interesting and brilliant to see something so positive for people and nature. Good luck to all involved and may the money keep coming!
Thank you.
I am running out of superlatives on your vlogs! Extremely informative!
Glad you like them!
Brilliant- a very useful documentary update on an important, interesting and challenging project. You Sir are a star thank you.👍
Many thanks!
Thank you very much going back for an update. We're quite keen to see how it progresses - still hoping tobe able to cruise it once in our life time :))
What a great project this is. Our local Canal is such a great resource. I hope the communities on the local housing estates to this canal appreciate what is being dug on their doorstep. It’ll definitely enhance the area.
Thank you.
Canals are a bit recreational stress reliever, great for the wildlife. They tick a lot of boxes even before you get on a boat.
Hi David thanks for that excellent well presented update. Hope to cruise there one day😊
Another interesting catch up. Patience required. (& look how your hair has shrunk in four years!!) Thanks. C&Lx
Cheers
the new canal with narrowboats will become a national treasure .
It will!
Thank the gods for all the volunteers, wishing them every success
Thank you!
Fantastic project. I wish them all the best and all the success for what they are doing. Wonderful people doing what they do. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Thank you.
What a massive undertaking. British volunteers amaze me.
Thank you!
So many of my pondering's answered in just over 17 minutes.
Thanks David.
What a brilliant project. Thanks very much to all involved!
Thank you for this wonderful update. I'd been curious what had happened with this restoration and their own videos were getting farther apart as Covid ravaged the world. Your American Cousins are envious of your canal system and the special ambiance they bring to your country.
Also, happy to see you and your wife out on the canals again. No one presents this information like you do.
Thank you 🙏
Well done David 👏🏼👌
Great update David. You excel at this. Enjoyed it immensely. 😊👍
Many thanks!
I think the owners of houses that will end up alongside the canal couldn't be happier.
Excellent progress, keep it up all of you involved, I'm full of admiration, we need more green corridors for humans and wildlife to thrive!
Thank you! Wonderful work by volunteers!!
Agreed
The overgrowth looks really nice and these unflooded canals seem like excellent walking paths in the mean time.
Bravo, David! You’re the Canal Man! I’m amazed how many NB vlogs there are….perhaps this exposure may provide leverage for additional funding, over time. I hope there are effective Canal lobbyists to advocate for the benefits of well managed canals to communities and for wildlife. It also provides more housing options for many who may not be able to afford home ownership, except for a Narrowboat. Keep up the good work!
Much appreciated
Thank you David very interesting video , it will look great when it's finish.
😀Dear David! Thank you sooo much for this masterpiece! `ve been waiting since 2019 for this video! Sooo good! Thanks, thanks, thanks!!! Please keep on watching this project for all of us!
Will do
Great work being done here - important work
Thank you!
Hi David great to see you again. Really interesting Vid. Be amazing when all the work to restore the canal is done. Slow progress but gradually taking form. Take care and all the best😊😊
Thanks 👍
Thanks for the updates, slowly but surely progess continues.
Yes it does!
thanks again David
👍
Thanks for the update David. Its nice to see progress is being made i really hope it will be done in my lifetime to cruise my boat through Litchfield. It does look more promising than the Derby canal restoration
Wow good luck! Nice to see, thanks
👍
Well done to all those involved
The plaques are nice.😊
Aren't they?!
Thanks for the update.
as always, great episode
Thanks for the update.
I hope you find time to film the building of the locks ... whenever they'll get to building them
Great video David - thanks for this. But yeesh! what an undertaking. Until recently I lived near the Tewitfield to Kendal stretch and your video really brought home to me the scale of the challenge here too. I must plan a trip down to Lichfield to have a look.
David any restoration does take a lot of work....especially when one is restoring something that had almost been lost and or more modern development around it!.....
To do it with mostly volunteers is a challenge in itself as well but it's good to see progress is being made!
Oh and BTW that "diggy thingy" is called an excavator!
Looking good
Great to see an update. Loving the 'rot not burn ' policy. Space permitting, perhaps there might even be an income stream from compost, some time down the road? Larger compost heaps are great for generating heat too .... just ask you local council's Parks Dept!
I'm not too sure there's any cut connected to the main canal network which sees only 'a few boats', except in the depths of winter. Even the isolated sections of the W&A and S&M frequently do better than 'a few' (OK ... licensed canoes, paddleboards etc., but it's still income)
Wonderful people doing great things! After a difficult day, I'm back full of vim and vigour😂 Thank you David👏👍
Cheers!
Admirable!
