- In honor of her birthday, here's a short tribute with a couple of clips of Darlene on the MMC.
Song: Uncle Dan (from "Corky and White Shadow) - Darlene Gillespie
More of these little tribute videos will be made for some of the other mouseketeers to be posted around their birthdays (specifically the 9 who were on the show for its entire run, and maybe Cheryl and Dennis). - Розваги
Darlene was the most gifted. She is my all time favorite Mouseketeer and always will be. Tommy's right up there too for me. 💖💖💖
Correct. She was the full package. As compared to Annette who was just a dancer but very good at sucking up to Walt.
I believe the most all around talented Mousketeer..If i had to pick one that best represented the group..It would be her
Female Sammy glick. Had no female friends. Too cutthroat and jealous
Darlene was my favorite mousketeer also.
I thought so when I was six!
She’s so pretty
She was always my favorite, those braids, but most of all, that Voice! Man can she sing. And Alto too, my favorite with women singers.
My favorite mousketeer
I think she was better like Anette! :)
ferego111 yeah. She was 100% better and prettier than Annette
She was talented and gorgeous.
She was the most multi-talented. So sad that so much of her adulthood life went pretty seriously south.
I remember signing this song at my uncle's funraul in 1960. He was such a great man. Darlene Gillespie was one of my favorite mouseketeers.
From my current observations, Darlene did a number of performances that were absolutely brilliant and apparently were way before her time, since she NEVER received the recognition that she deserved.
@@charamcnuggers9534 She had talent. Too bad she was such a prima donna; that's what ultimately brought her down. She was a bee-atch.
@@charamcnuggers9534 She was a bitch. Treated the other kids horribly. I mean she was such a bitch that even Jimmy Dodd begged Uncle Walt to NOT let Darlene go on the Mouseketeer World Tour. That's pretty bad.
@@charamcnuggers9534 There's quite a lot going on you haven't mentioned. Darlene was easily the best performer. She could sing, act, dance, do comedy and impersonations. Annette could dance and look cute but that was about it.
But Darlene and especially her father were ambitious. Her father kept on demanding more money for Darlene. This annoyed Walt. Annette on the other hand toe'd the line and blew smoke up Walt's ass.
Although Darlene was the best, Annette got a lot fan mail and became Walt's favourite while the continual demands for more money from Darlene's father irritated him. Thus, Annette got the role in the mini series and Darlene was sidelined.
@@PreservationEnthusiast 🥺🥺🥺💔💔💔
@@mysticalmargaret6105 Darlene >>>>>>> Annette
She always seemed to be enjoying it the most
Happy 80th to Mouskateer Darlene and to Lennon sister Peggy, such immense talented girls.
God, how this now old man loved that girl!
Always my favorite. So talented!
she was my favorite mousketeer.
She is Pretty!
Nice tribute!
She was my absolute favorite mouseketeer Darlene gillespie
Such simpler times.
She had that sparkle that lit up the TV screen.
She was the most talented of the Mousketeers and Disney realized that early on. She was given a serial - "Corky and White Shadow" - and she recorded many albums under the "Disneyland Record" label. Unfortunately, she just never caught on with viewers - and Annette eventually stole her thunder. Show business is a tough business.
I think part of the problem with her recording career, is that she was forced to do cover songs, while Annette was given NEW material, like first name initial and Tall Paul
@@shoknifeman2mikado135 I think Annette was given those songs because she was - well - ANNETTE. Whoever was handling Annette saw a teen idol in the making. Meanwhile, Darlene was viewed more as a singer stuck in the 50s - and stuck in the Disney 50s.
So wholesome family oriented
Loved her in Corky and White Shadow.
My sister is doing great people she living in Los Vegas remember when you watch the old shows, they worked the kids 7 days a week! 5 days at the Studio and Two days at the park when it first opened!
Born in Montreal Quebec, she is half French Canadian
She had the greatest voice. She should have stayed in the music business!
Yes, it was apparent in the first season that Darlene was the standout. She had that camera presence and seemed to draw attention, whether deliberately upstaging the others or not. It was that big tooth smile that was part of it. But she and her father sabotaged her career by being too aggressive Disney management. This is the reason why Walt Disney started grooming Annette Funicello. When Annette was offered her own serial, the intent was to pair her up with Darlene, with Darlene playing Jet Maypen, her country girl friend. The documentation on this states that Darlene objected to a supporting role to Annette, so the part was given to Judy Nugent, who could barely act.
It is interesting that several other Mouseketeers went on with show business careers, but she did not. Roberta Shore, who played the snobby rich girl in the ANNETTE serial went on to a featured role on the TV Western, THE VIRGINIAN. This was a major role, and it is a curious thing that Darlene was not considered for it, or that Darlene did not ask for it. It might have been interesting to see Darlene play a negative character who comes around and overcomes her jealousy and befriends Annette after the necklace that she accused Annette of stealing is found in the piano. On the other hand, Darlene had a "country style" personality, which may have influenced the casting decision. Disney only kept Darlene Gillespie on after the Mickey Mouse Clue ended due to the term of her contract and had her doing records. Once her contract term had ended, Disney did not renew it, nor had any further plans for her.
Doreen Tracey was all that and more-what a babe! Clearly my favorite of the bunch.
My daughter is named Darlene and I always loved Darlene on the Mickey Mouse Club.
Darlene Gillespie should have been a bigger star than Annette funicello. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
@@harperstacey9604 Darlene was much more talented. Unfortunately Annette toadied up to Walt and blew smoke up his arse and swarmed her way to bigger roles.
Great talent.
I got Darlene to do video message for my grandma when I met her in 2015
I loved Corky and White Shadow. Can someone put it on youtube?
Darlene was extremely talented compared to many of the other kids.
First Crush.
My parents named me after her.!
I knew her. Her sister Pat is my godmother. And her father was my sponser at confirmation.
Darlene was my first girlfriend. When I was five. At least I thought she was.
Uncle Dan eh? When he plays away on its own Squeezebox
my Mom named me after her..
I always thought Darlene was WAAAAY hotter and talented than Annette.
What was with Disney's obsession with guns? The kids had them. Isn't that a violation of the Youth Firearms Safety Act?
Imo Darlene should have been just as (if not more) successful than Annette.
I wanted to *be* Darlene Gillespie when I was a sissy-boy kid watching the show! lol ;D
Darlene Gillespie should have led a successful life but Annette funicello eclipsed her.
Darlene was certainly the prettiest. I could never understand why hairy Annette got all the attention.
Darlene and her father were ambitious and asked Walt for more money. Annette toadied up to Walt and blew smoke up his ass. Annette toe'd the line. Yes Mr Disney, No Mr Disney. She smarmed her way to better roles.
Darlene certainly was very talented. I don't like to compare, but Annette had an amazing way of making an emotional connection with viewers through the TV. That's gold!
