Cats eyes can last 10+ years if on a quieter road with not much traffic driving over them, but they sometimes only last 5 years or so on a major road where they get drove over often because the rubber gets worn down so much that the eyes break out of them, the stick on reflectors however start breaking off after about 3 years, on dual carriageway, main roads ect they only last a few months but they do make plastic reflectors in cast iron bases that can last a few years on major roads aswell. In my opinion stimsonite stick-on reflectors last a bit longer than the 3m branded stick-on ones
They definitely started out in the UK, but have spread to a fair number of countries, evidently, not including Germany. The more you know! As for getting hold of one, that would be £20 on eBay, definitely pulled from an old road, and I imagine saved from being recycled for scrap.
Wikipedia says Germany does have them, just a different look. Australia/US/Canada use similar ideas, with a different patent/design. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat%27s_eye_(road) 99percentinvisible.org/article/decoding-cats-eyes-global-color-guide-reflective-road-markers/ Excellent video
tesla is having trouble with cars and their blind spots,, if the cars relayed their position to a cats eye in the road it would tackle the issue without fail... Cats eyes can be used to detect the position of cars that can not clearly be seen... it would bring us to level 5 autonomy fast.... the road sees the cars and the cars see the road......JOB DONE
what is the lifetime of a cat's eye road stud - original reflective type ? And that of the reflective colored plastic types mentioned ?

Are there different designs of the reflector in cat's eyes?
I believe the newer designs use a more standard retro-reflective strip, but don't quote me on that.
@@TMW_Photography makes me so sad when i just see the strips , i love the eyes at night after moving from the states to ireland
I've never seen one on the roads in germany, are they are UK thing?
Also ,how did you get your hands on one of those things? It looked rather "used"

Thank you for looking it up.
So interesting, just found out about this reading a 4 year oldUA-cam comment on a random video explaining road markings. I just love general knowledge
