I can picture people gathered around this instrument in an old Victorian living room, the logs in the fireplace crackling with Mom &Dad sitting in the overstuffed chairs and the red velvet curtains behind them, us kinds on the large area rug. The gas lights flickering and the snow swirling outside the picture window.

Beautiful chimes such as this from heaven from five to to ten seconds then our lady spoke greetings “hi mark” with such a beautiful tender voice. Chimes like these remember of that moment between sleep and awake.2006-2007?
That was absolutely beautiful !! When I was a little kid, my great aunt had a large music box like this, and several tune sheets, but not this song that I can remember. Also, I had forgotten how wonderful the sustain is through the wooden box, it sounds sooo great!
@MusicBoxBoy I just love music, both creating it, playing it, and listening to it. To me, these antique music boxes provide a perfectly accurate revisitation of the sounds of the late 1800's and very early 1900's. There are very few things which can provide such an experience, putting you 'right there' yet again to enjoy it as it was (and still is). Oh, and let's not forget the artistic value of the machine itself, considering also just how much work went into building them, a much slower pace
@@helmetedautistic8647 yeah, there's also the carnival calliope, which is a self playing pipe organ, and they are a real treat to watch and listen to. And most modern pipe organs have a midi function too, mind you, a computer is usually required to be hooked up, but some older models use the music paper that player piano's and calliopes used back in the old days as well, so despite it's popularity as a digital format, midi has been around for quite some time as a self playing music format.
Certainly this makes me feel nostalgic. However, when I see and listen to this, the smile of the proud craftsman when I finish making this and let someone listen to it comes to my mind, and I also smile.

It's NOT obsolete, as music boxes still exist and are sold today. So there is a market for the product. The only difference is that what is sold now pales in comparison. It's cheap five note junk. So yeah, the point stands. This is superior technology in terms of the craft of creating music boxes.
Imagine the first time this was ever seen by the public imagine how magical that moment must have been! But also knowing how the people from back then reacted to new things they probably thought it was witchcraft or something
one can only stand in awe of the people who built these things and the skill that went into the making of the machine

The tech behind this is no different than music boxes, which go back to the late 1700s. Now look up wire recorders and really have your mind blown.

Musical boxes are magical, but also a bit sad. It's like "canned" emotions. Crystal clear and vibrant, but strangely lifeless.
I could not agree more. I think it shows you that music does not really come from the musical instrument, but somewhere else.
