Old piano adventure; the saloon sound
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 чер 2010
- I bought this old Schiller upright piano from a neighbor just for fun... it needs tuning badly, but I thought it was unique the way it sounded... kind of like an old saloon piano! :-) Rick
Only 1907 kids will relate
They seem to be dead
1907 kids... Mostly in coffins now.
Shut up, fortnite kid
they are probably watching in their coffins
What sticks is that even in an excellent condition, this piano is worth next to nothing. Mirror pianos are recycled pianos that were refurbished during WW2. Its a beautiful piano, and if they didn’t convert it it would’ve been appraised for a higher price. Sad, right?
Now all we need is one huge bar fight.

*bar goers stares at everyone*
*poker player leaves revealing a hand of five aces*
Perfect

I always come back to this video when I want to hear a solid saloon piano and an absolutely talented pianist
Thank you! Glad you enjoy the music video! I like it too. :-)
My piano a Conway Boston with a Simplex player sits in the corner of my dining room waiting for me to restore it. I had it tuned about 7 years ago and its holding it well...could use a touch up.
But it sounds just like this with a bit less sustain. (I suspect this ones is malfunctioning a bit)
I have been struggling with the idea of deep restoration because I didn't want to loose that old saloon sound as he puts it.
Me too, I must have viewed this one a hundred times over many years. Thanks Rick

Perfect for Boogie-woogie. My grandfather was a London Piano Plinth Fitter, adjusting the iron casting around which pianos like this were built in a cottage industry:
The piano was trundled from hiuse to house for various parts to be fitted, and the tuner (often a blind man) at the other end rolled out the finished product.
Every pub had one in its saloon bar, giving Cockney music its distinctive sound, and many people aspired to have one in their drawing-room too.
The cottage industry - and that sound - ended abruptly in London after 1911. German manufacturers built pianos on production lines which assured their quality and stability of tuning. My Grandpa's career as a craftsman was over, and he joined the Royal Navy - but a decade later he met my Grandmother over a piano, and the rest is family history.
Thank you for the kind words, Lindsay! I appreciate it! 🙂
It was nice to hear about your grandfather.
Rick
The best known piano tuner in my home city was a blind man named Corky. He also bought old uprights like this and converted them into player pianos. Our old Shakey's Pizza had one and several othe places around town. Your post reminded me of him.
@@johnchandler1687 Glad to be of service. Sadly, our Saloons (a nicer room than the public bar in the same premises, carpeted, with cushioned seats and ladies could be and men were not allowed in their work clothes nor allowed to smoke) are all gone. No longer is the popularity of an English pub instantly discernable from the density of strata of smoke lingering in its public bar (or the stickiness of its bare boards). And no longer is the foid confined to a pork pie with English mustard, or a grease-proof paper packet of crisps with salt in a twist of blue paper.
Pubs are strangely much better but less social.

I use to be a saloon player back in the 1880’s. It was a difficult job playing songs during bar fights, arguing and gun shots. But i made it happen. Wasn’t going to let the piano down.
And I was a Harpsichord player for King George III in the 1780s, he told me to play Yankee Doodle on repeat, don't know why. One day I played it and he seemed to not like it that much anymore. Damn youngin's and their new tunes.. it was a perfectly ok song, why'd he get mad?

dude $75??!! Deal of the century! good job
Arthur Literally century!
75 FUCKING DOLLARS HOLY SHIT!
You guys didn't understand, it's not the deal of the century because since it's a rotten piano you have to retune it and it's not even sure if its structure holds or its strings. In other words, you pay $75 for a piano to buy a new one.
The Art of the Deal
@lone beast Not at all because no one will buy an old piano since you are a pianist/or play piano frequently. There are plenty of pianos like this one for the same price (and betters) on the piano market, and people don't buy them because they know the truth behind the price in general. I can't disagree with the fact that this old piano sounds really cool, but i wouldn't buy it for practicing or else, and i'm sure 0 people who know what is like to have a piano will buy it.
Always come back to this masterpiece

I love it when people love and respect old things. There's probably nothing like these old pianos today.
Yep, there are new pianos that will one day be old pianos.
Ray Ray Most of todays pianos will always be considered crap because they are, theyre made cheaply now. Luckily there are still lots of old quality pianos around like this one :)
Gucci: Are you a pianist?
Ray Ray Not a pianist persay, but learned piano for quite a while & love to play & listen..
Gucci A lot of stuff is made for pure profits unfortunately nowadays. Back in the day, there was a lot of great items that were made very well vs now. Cars, dishwashers, etc....all comes down to profits and making a high quality product is more expensive and long lasting items don’t make as much money.
Personally, there’s surely some high quality pianos out there but I wouldn’t know. Not the majority though.
