As a West Coast OC we always taught footwork matches the deeper routes. It is easier to hit the underneath routes on the hitch of your drop. Or as Bill Walsh used to coach it, the 2nd hitch of the drop.

I think it is best to read short to deep because you are less likely to not see a defender closing in for coverage for a pick. Imo
