How did Holly not get a win for that whole scene after Hans shoots Takagi.
"What idiot put you in charge?"
"you did when you murdered my boss"
woody280486 “Now everyone’s looking to me. Personally, I pass on the job as I don’t enjoy being this close to you”
@@PBL187 I'm just gonna say it Holly McClane is always a win
woody280486 Well she also owned Dick Thornburg, twice
Holly is a bitch
Also for this exchange:
"Oh, that man looks totally PISSED"
Holly: "He's still alive!"
"What?"
"Only John can drive somebody that crazy"
"Did L.A. sunsets look like this back in the 80's?" 1:06
Yes... it's called 'Pollution'.
Remember Beverly Hills cop II? Its all red
Actually shots like that were made using a polorised lens cover which is literally called “Sunset lens” Tony Scott (Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop II) loved using them
Gotta love when the air is so thick with trash it slows down the wavelength of the light enough to redshift it.
Lol there’s also something to the color grading as well. The warm shift was prevalent in 80’s and early 90’s movies. I miss it, because it looks a lot better than greys and cold blues everything is graded in now.
They the smog is the reason they have such beautiful sunsets!
5:56 I think that “welcome to the party, pal” was meant for Al, as in “thanks for finally showing up, this is what I’m dealing with”
I think it is meant for Al
Absolutely
It DEFINITELY is meant for Sgt. Al Powell. I'm not sure how that wasn't obvious when he made the video, but it's such a great video that we'll point it out AND excuse it at the same time 😁
For sure
10:14 Urkel had it coming.
I love McClain trying to call the emergency hotline. "Does it sound like I'm ordering a PIZZA! " to the cop who tried to tell him this is an only "emergency hotline".
Hot cop, too.
RIP Alan Rickman, one of the greatest...
True
agreed
Agreement!
This movie basically the starting career for Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, props to both of the iconic hero and villain...
...and may Alan Rickman rest in peace.
When I saw Bruce Willis star in the new TWILIGHT ZONE episode "Shatterday" (based on a magnificent Harlan Ellison story), I knew he would have a great career in Hollywood, as he proved that his wise-cracking MOONLIGHTING character wouldn't be a stumbling block of typecasting. He could ACT -- even in dramatic roles. DIE HARD blew me away for being probably the smartest action film I had ever seen up till that point, with a terrific star-turn for Bruce.
Having said that, it would be a gas to see somebody do a Deep Fake and superimpose Frank Sinatra's face over that of Bruce Willis, since the main character in the novel DIE HARD was based on was the same character that Sinatra portrayed in THE DETECTIVE -- in fact, the studio was obligated contractually to offer Sinatra the part and, luckily, he turned it down, and the novel's Father-Daughter dynamic was changed to a Husband-Wife one. Imagine a Sinatra Deep-Fake over Bruce here, maybe substituting "Ring-a-ding-ding, motherfucker!" for "Yippee-ky-yay, motherfucker!" . . . stuff like that.
Hans Gruber wasn't being racist for pretending all Japanese look the same. He was purposefully drawing out Takagi by pretending to mistake him.
Agreement!
Well he was, but not because he was a bigot, because he had a plan.
@@johnmurcott1273 we can further nuance it by saying that he made a racist comment. He himself was not a racist but used the racial angle to achieve his goal.
@@jip5889 Touch grass, it doesn't matter.
@@SpaceMarine500 you don’t matter so shut it.
"Did LA in the 80s really have sunsets like this?"
Yes. Yes it did. I lived in LA in the 80s. The smog was real.
Side note:
The movie was largely filmed at Fox Plaza, and Fox billed themselves a rent for the duration of the shooting.
Thus saving a shitton of money on a location shoot.

Everything Great About Disney's Treasure Planet. That's a movie that didn't deserve to bomb. It even got an Oscar nomination for best animated film.
Anyone agree/disagree?
bladersmosh wasn't that before the BAF award was created?
yes
2001 was BAF award from what I can find, Treasure Planet was 2002. Looks like it would have barely made the cut!
bladersmosh Yes, do it.
Ryder Draconis Nostalgia Critic likes the Princess Bride. He doesn’t usually do films he likes, with some exceptions.
The reason the C4 exploded when John dropped it down the elevator shaft is because det-caps (the things he sticks into the block) are shock sensitive. The reason for putting the monitor on the chair on top of the C4 was to give it more impact force when it landed on top of the elevator.
Also, shrapnel.
CRTs did have huge capacitors that stayed charged for some time, though. Disassembling them is very dangerous if you don't know what your doing.
Netflix has an excellent series called "The Movies That Made Us" and _Diehard_ is one of the movies they cover. Excellent series, from the same people who did "The Toys That Made Us".
Oh, cool. Thanks for the heads up!
@@jasonblalock4429 No problem! I also recommend the short series "The Confession Killer" about Henry Lee Lucas, who was _supposedly_ the most prolific serial killer in American history...until someone started digging and looking deeper. Fascinating to follow!
thanks didnt knwo watching it now
My favorite part of this movie that’s less obvious is that “ode to joy” is played whenever we see the vault, but it’s in a minor key and just on a single cello until the vault opens and we get the glory of that full orchestra, one of those moments that makes you almost root for Gruber and co, very well done
i love that part as well, its important for the bad guys to have some parts go well.
The best part about that scene was the wind blowing through Hans' hair as if he was standing on a beach watching the waves come in
@@mg19cal earning 20%
@@Kruppt808 exactly 👍👍
Also, the tune of "Ode to Joy" is also the tune of "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee," which is a hymn very often sung at Christmas time...
The film is a masterclass in setup and payoff. Everything serves the story, nothing is wasted, and that makes it the best Christmas movie ever.
There's a part that you forgot to win, the scene where holly asks for a sofa and bathroom brakes. I think it kinda humanizes Hans a bit, he still is a human and wants to make it easier for the pregnant lady. Love your content BTW and Merry Christmas from Finland!
Its also a win for Holly showing that she's a badass in her own way.
Not just a badass -- she's a natural leader.
Helsinki, Sweden
"What idiot put you in charge?"
"You did... when you killed my boss."
Definitely a win.
@metalgearhead99 Yeah. Hans went along with Holly's requests for purely pragmatic reasons. The requests were entirely reasonable, and taking care of them could potentially prevent unnecessary problems later on. Since the plan was to herd them to the roof, keeping them relatively placated would be important.
A lot, and I mean a *lot*, of what makes the original Die Hard so good is that it was based on a much darker, grittier novel about a different character entirely in a very similar (yet not quite the same) situation. The book it was based on, "Nothing Lasts Forever" by Roderick Thorp, was actually a sequel to a much longer and more "literary" work called "The Detective," which itself was adapted into a film starring Frank Sinatra quite a long time before Die Hard was made. "Nothing Lasts Forever," by comparison, was short and rather pulpy... but interesting nonetheless, telling the story of the now-grizzled and aged Joe Leland (protagonist of "The Detective") as he, ending up in the wrong place at the wrong time with no shoes on much like John McClane would in the movie, became the one-man obstacle to Tony Gruber's terrorist mission to publicly expose Klaxon Oil's arms deals with a dictatorship in Chile and "redistribute" the contents of their vault to the people, a huge P.R. stunt for a group of radicals. Your mention of John McClane being the "antagonist" here is especially interesting because the book this movie was based on leaves the reader somewhat in uncertainty over who the true "good guy" of the conflict even was.
As an amusing detail, the "gun taped to the back" trick works without a hitch for John McClane in the movie but doesn't completely work out for Joe Leland in the book. Joe's daughter (replaced by John's wife in the movie) falls to her death along with Gruber and his hand does indeed catch on her wristwatch while he drags her down. Leland isn't able to reach her in time and she even takes a shot to the abdomen from Gruber before he even drags her to the window at all. It's a little nebulous as to whether Leland's daughter deserved to die or not, as Gruber claimed she knew what the Klaxon Oil company was up to, but she dies before Leland has a chance to confront her on the issue and get her side of the story.
Oh, but don't think Leland doesn't have his own special brand of marital problems, because OH BOY, Thorp gets into that can of worms in "The Detective."
The upshot is that though John McClane is written as being a cool action hero, much of conflict is based on a more down-to-earth story of a much older man who had a REAL struggle to stay on top of the game, and that translates into a very, very well-rounded action movie where all of the hero's victories feel earned through hard fighting and clever resourcefulness rather than just handed to him because the director thought it would look cool... like in the later Die Hard movies.
Didn't expect to see you here Lewis
And then this:
In "Die Hard", Willis plays a cop character who is much older in the original writing.
In "Sin City", Willis.... plays a cop character who is much older in the original writing.
Very well informed comment gets Christmas upvote.
In the book, there actually was a terrorist named Hans who was Karl’s brother. Tony Gruber was the main antagonist. There were also four women among the terrorists, it never left Joe Leland, the fight went on from 8:06 PM 12/24 - 11:33AM 12/25, and he might have actually died at the end.
@@SavageDawgJoshua jeez, now you've got me *KINDA* wanting to see @CinemaWins do "Sin City"...
I know the "Brutal..." would be non-stop, but that film is just SO gorgeous.
The color shadowing you talk about just after the one minute mark was typical Los Angeles smog in the 80s. It was so bad they had smog alerts to stay indoors and it used to be blamed for pealing paint on cars. Different times back then with less clean air
How about now in the Age of Covid? Take deep breaths my friend.
@@soundped I know! Even a couple months ago, I'm watching the few people that are walking around [this big city] outside wearing masks over their faces and I'm eye-rollingly commenting internally about how the air here is cleaner than in living memory and everyone's avoiding it more than before!
The “welcome to the party pal” line is in regards to him throwing the body onto the police car to get the officers attention and involved.
Hard to believe, but this was Alan Rickman's first motion picture. Up to that point, he was basically an unknown and struggling stage actor with only one moderately successful play on his resume, which was turned into a movie, but his role was recast and given to John Malkovich who was more famous and a reliable box office draw.
Darren Z at his age it was late

5:13 Fingers actually don't have muscles. All finger strength and movement come from tendons connected to the forearm muscles.
Human anatomy lessons win.
So you believe there is no muscles in the pads of your finger tips, along your phalanges? Ligaments attach muscle to bone and tendons attach bone to bone at a joint. Since tendons are A vascular (no direct blood supply) without muscles your skin would have no circulation at all. Read a proper Anatomy & Physiology text book.
@@beverlyanne5699 No, she's right. The muscles that control hand movement are in your palms and forearms. There are no muscles in the fingers.
@@13strong There's 6 muscles in each finger, and the index and pinky have 7.
My favorite thing about this movie is that there were only 35 pages of script written when they started filming. The rest of it was written during production.
LA sunsets were beautiful in the 80's due to the large amount of smog in the air. The incredible reds, pinks, oranges, purples in almost every sunset as your lungs were burning.
Hans Gruber is one of the greatest movie villains (maybe super-villains almost lol) in history.
My first Alan Rickman movie and followed him every since. Everybody loves Snape (I do too) but this will always be my favorite role. Thank you for doing this movie.😍😍
A little fun fact actually, the director of this movie wanted the whole thing to sound real so he had the guns loaded with loud blanks (I'm pretty sure). And during the scene with Bruce under the table and Alan on top trying to shoot him (Again I think, can't remember too well) the shots from Bruce's gun made him either 3/4s or 2/3s deaf in his left ear. Sucks but at least it was a good movie.
Edit: It was NOT Alan, it was one of the goons who made the remark, "Next time you have a chance to kill someone don't hesitate!"
The one on the table was Marco
lol your comment made me laugh. The poor guy, loses his hearing for the rest of his life - sucks for him but at least it was a good movie! 🤣
"How did you lose your hearing Daddy?"
WHAT?!
It was the smoking hot Italian guy, kind of funny how nasty he was to the half naked woman when ordinarily he would have jumped her himself.
Bunph Gaming it was terrorist Marco who was on the table and says to McClane “ Where you going pal? No more table, next time you have the chance to kill someone, don’t hesitate” John remarks” Thanks for the advice” a classic scene he later throws Marco out the window on to Sergeant Al Powells car. Bruce Willis did lose hearing in ear from the scene where shoots under table
Fun fact: Die Hard & Speed are in the same shared universe.

Still my favorite action movie of all times, from childhood to now. I love it more now because I get the deeper tones that were hiding in plain sight that I did not see as a kid. As a kid it was about the action and the one liners. As an adult, I see the pain and emotion. I hear so many people loving this just because it was a great action flick, but I love it because it is just an all around great movie on so many levels. And I agree with those who said it before me, greatest Christmas movie ever.

So did you watch it?
Had an extra special meaning as a native of SoCal living on the Central Coast. Loved to see the "Nakitomi Plaza" on trips to there. I like L.A., but its changing too much, actually all of Cal.
Watched this on Chirstmas Eve. One of the greatest action as well as Christmas movies of all time. An iconic, legendary, standout, and amazing film. A film filled with so many iconic sayings like "Yippee ki yay", references about other films, actors, and much more to even mention as well as say about this film. Like its not one of those Christmas movies about joy or happiness but a Christmas film, that is filled with action which is what makes it so unique. Its a film about emotion, being a hero, fighting, against all odds and etc. Like every single part of it was amazing, the story, the characters, the music, the action throughout the film; where no matter what, you were always on the edge of your seat as if you were the character, constantly experiencing his emotion, what was occurring, his humor, the action, it was like a roller coaster of emotions that is honestly better explained if you felt it as well as watched it since you were constantly cheering him on as well as worrying what was going to happen next, and him coming out as a hero, his legacy, alongside saving the day. Like every year, I always watch a Christmas movie with my twin brother, since he always recommends new Christmas films to watch together on Christmas and when he mentioned this, which is a film we've never watched before only until now, it really goes to show how amazing it was & probably his best pick & by far one if not, the greatest action film of all time as well as Christmas film of all time due to its uniqueness. Like I honestly can't believe how this film came out in 1988, and how advanced it was for its time, especially with how great it must've been in that era. It's honestly hard to find anything unique to this type of film like what a time it must've been in that era to be alive. Such an excellent cast, especially Willis who honestly never fails when it comes to these types of films especially when it was in his prime. Sad to see the condition he is in now, wishing him all the best as well as hearing about Gilyard passing away a couple of months back which honestly makes you look back to the film and see how amazing he was. Same with Willis when he was in his prime. Like the amount of people that still watch this film and mention about it, really goes to show how much of a legacy it has, and how its by far the greatest action movie of all time. Truly unforgettable, especially every scene which was just so iconic, amazing and so much to say about this film. Like its a neverending page of words. Like if you're picking out a perfect action film to watch that will always make you on the edge of your seat filled with emotion and always focused this is your film to watch. 5 stars.

Speaking of Rickman honing his chops on villainous roles, how about Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves? With a score so majestic Disney stole it for their home video line.
I always thought Hanz's speech about Takagi's life was a bit to show Takagi he knows all about him, getting him to reveal himself was a slight like "I'm in charge, you do what I say". He could have just grabbed Takagi and marched out but this speech was a way of controlling the situation. If not for John, Hanz had this heist set up perfectly. There's no way he didn't know Takagi by sight, and unless I missed it I don't think he was ever racist in the movie. Too suave and elegant for that.

One aspect that you failed to mention was Holly's knowledge about John. Two scenes, the one where she realizes that it is John that is driving the terrorists crazy, and the scene near the end before John shoot Hans, and the other thief. That dynamic also helped to make that a great movie.
Things great about Die Hard: EVERYTHING!!!
Also 4:54 I think you mean: “A moment of rage for 80’s gas prices.”
Best action movie ever. There is so much realism with John talking to himself to the bad guys making jokes to lighten up the murder and make themselves ignore the bad they've done.

It's sad how right you are.
Most of the complaints people have about the movie are straight nonsense, some of them make sense as there are a handful of flaws with the movie...but to make a petition to remove it from the franchise is just sad.
I've seen people say it's worse than Batman vs Superman, which is even more depressing.
Remember people, if a movie has one or two scenes you don't like IT'S THE WORST MOVIE EVER AND YOU SHOULD BE *SO* ANGRY
mrcheesemunch What film is it?
The Last Jedi. Wasn't a huge fan of it, but yeah Star Wars fans are crazy.
Not everybody has to like films that you like, dude. What you see as a 'nonsense' complaint might well be a genuine one to someone else.
+Matthew St. Cyr
*FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN THE MOVIE, SPOILERS AHEAD*
Well like I stated, most of the complaints I've seen are silly. I'm not talking a few people I'm talking many thousands.
It's not some fringe group there's millions of "true" Star Wars fans who hate the movie for reasons like:
"The Porgs ruined the movie"
Like a tiny bit of comic relief destroys the story, and as if comedy has never been part of the series before. HOW DID THEY GET THE GOGGLES ON, MY IMMERSION!
"Luke died omg why didn't he have a big epic fight!
I can see why people would be upset he died and stuff, but to say that it ruins the movie within the context of everything the movie is about, is just silly. It's very well explained by Luke himself that he was done and wouldn't be enough to win.
"It's too long!"
It was a long movie, still a shit complaint to say that ruined it.
"Snoke died too fast, this movie is fucking terrible"
Even though the same thing happened with The Emperor and he done even less as a villain(until his story was filled out in later movies, something that may also happen with Snoke)
"Admiral Akbar died wtf!"
Yes, the most important meme character died so this movie should be removed from the franchise, that's not an overreaction at all.
And again like I said, there are valid complaints about the movie.
Such as, that Leia scene. I thought it was a bit much. Though The Force works in mysterious ways and it would have been morbid to just kill her off like that.
Personally if I had the choice of writing that scene, Kylo would have just used The Force to throw her out the room before it exploded.
It was kind of dumb but hardly "ruined" the movie.
The whole Casino section and the dull romance between Rose and Finn.
That section was way too long and only served to show us that boy at the end and introduce DJ, should have been way shorter as it sort of derailed the tension for a while.
Still didn't ruin the whole movie.
And the kiss between Rose and Finn was so out of place, nothing they did was romantic. Overall it was just dumb. Plus how she saved him during his freaking epic sacrifice.
How they didn't tell Poe about the plan with the transport ships.
This was kinda dumb and the only point of it was to have a twist, though to be fair it did cement Holdo's authority and made her sacrifice more impactful.
It could have been done much better but Poe was being a bit of a fool in the movie so why would they tell him really.
+Rory Stockley Considering a large portion of people hate the movie for explainable parts of the story, they are nonsense complaints.
People expect things to come out and be exactly like they imagined or else it's terrible, which is utterly silly. Your headcanon isn't fact and in most cases probably shouldn't be.
There are people who think Luke should have swooped in and destroyed the whole First Order, as if that makes any sense what so ever.
As I've detailed in my comment before this, there are some legitimate complaints but _most_ of the ones I've seen are nonsense from pathetic "fans" who don't even seem to like Star Wars.
Which sums up a stupidly large amount of the fanbase.
No fanbase hates the object of their affection more than the Star Wars fanbase.
"We hate George Lucas!"
"We hate anything George Lucas made!"
"But keep George Lucas away from the franchise!"
"Get this director in...actually don't we all hate him!"
"We want more Star Wars!"
"We hate every new Star Wars thing!"
Nothing ever seems to be acceptable, apologies for not being respectful of their incredibly whiny and mostly dumb complaints.
My one and only complaint with this movie was, why did Hans have to clarify his order to "shoot the glass" in English? What, Karl is so pissed off that he's suddenly forgotten his native language and only understands English? It would usually be the other way around.

"Looking forward to the death threats." You know the internet well.
Fun Fact:
The music being played when Al Powell saves John & Holly McClane from
Karl Vreski is a rejected music cue
by James Horner for James Cameron's *"ALIENS"* (1986).
Everything great about The Commando (1985) PLEASEEEEEEE
you gotta try princess bride
Actually I'm lookimg forward to your The Last Jedi EGA, it always helps me find things I can say I liked about films I didnt really enjoy.
I'm sad to say I agree.
It was fantastic, just like Force Awakens. So sick of this negative trend that has perpetuated the internet.
It’s trash
Well no I saw the movie and didn't like it, hadn't been influenced by anyone at that point, its unfair to simply dismiss my opinion as a "trend" because you don't like it.
Jokie155, I loved the film too, but all they said was they didn't really enjoy it. Chill.
"Urkel had it coming." I legitimately spit out a bit of drink when you said that.
"An intolerance for bad guys," heh.
when John shoots from underneath the table the gun noise makes him deaf or severely impaired hearing wise in one ear permanently.
Yipee Kai Yay and happy new year!
Beethoven's Ode to Joy (in it's full orchestral version) is one of my all time favorite songs.
Jake Peralta agrees
The part when he says “welcome to the party pal!” was meant for the cop, telling him that there’s something crazy going on in the building, not a murder joke,it still gets me every time 😂
Ooh so kingsman 2 next week?
Max Harrison YEP
Learned about Frank Lloyd Wright in Art history. Falling water was one of my favorite pieces.
Wait $.075 for gas??? GET THE CANA HONEY WE'RE GOIN TO BE RICH
I like how no one notices the Glass Forshadowing. 2o+ minutes before Hans yells shoot the glass, and John has to barefoot run through broken glass, we have the police chief yell about broken glass and John reply back "who gives a shit about glass" Layers.
Very well done!
Another great thing about the use of the radios is that it allows John and Hans to get to know each other and build a personal dislike towards each other, not just because of what they're doing, but because of who they are.
John doesn't hate Hans just because he's killing innocent people. John hates Hans because he's callous and cruel in his methods.
Likewise, Hans hates McClane not just for interrupting his plans, but for doing it gleefully, taunting him from afar whenever he gets one up on him.
By the end, their conflict is less good guy vs bad guy, and more just wanting to finally put a bullet in the asshole that they've grown to hate over the course of the film.
"Powell got to murder somebody again"
LMAO
It's my alternative Christmas film! I am looking forward to reviewing this :) Great content!
"Alan Rickman is always a win"
You said it yourself.
ALWAYS
I think “welcome to the party” was for the cop.
BRUCE WILLIS breakout role and ALAN RICKMAN/ HANS GRUBER is one of the greatest movie villians of all-time.
Oh good, I'm glad you mentioned that there's no action until 18 minutes in because other wins:
-The use of QUIET in this movie. Other action movies could learn a thing or two. There's a moment when the discordant jingle bells score cuts suddenly because John thinks he might have heard something in the distance and it's golden.
-The creepy BING of the elevator throughout.
-Alexander Godunov was in ballet. He moves like a predator, it's amazing to watch.
-The bad guys are so smart, their plan is amazing.
-Bonnie Bedelia is actually older than Bruce Willis - how often does that happen?
-Beautiful use of the lens flares.
-Al Powell says "...and when to pray" right before the spotlight lights up behind him like a halo.
Late to this video, but another brilliant thing in this movie is the music. Another YTer (Howard Ho) who focuses on music did a deep dive into how Beethoven’s 9th (which the Ode to Joy is from) is interwoven throughout the movie, particularly when we are following the actions of Hans and his band of thieves. It’s another layer that helps make this movie so good.
5:05 half the villains in the film look like they belong in a 80s hair metal tribute band
McClane: who gives a ****** about glass!
**irony** *ding!*
I just now found this channel but I like it so much more than Cinema Sins
