Ben is saying that the US has no influence to restrain Netanyahu. Which I find hard to believe. Not enabling can also be seen as a way of restraining can't it? Not airlifting unlimited quantities of munitions would have restrained their indiscriminate bombing as they would have to more carefully select real military targets. Not sending aircraft carriers to the region would have restrained their adventurism on the northern front. Not promising $14 billion in additional arms would have also had a restraining effect. All these steps taken by the US have given Netanyahu carte blanche to prosecute this assault on Gaza in the most violent and brutal way he can. With tragic results for thousands of Palestinian civilians.
Yes that's an absolutely absurd take and it's one that you commonly see from people that just don't want to reckon with biden's complicity here. And I understand it, it's an election year and everything but it's just silly. Obviously the US veto power and unconditional aid embolden netanyahu. There is a huge international consensus in favor of a very specific solution to this, and the US and Israel are basically alone in the world in opposing it. Every member of the security council on the one hand, and 170 other nation states or so... And Israel the US and a few dependency islands like palau and Micronesia on the other
US has lost it’s way,not just in this situation!
Of all the debates around this conflict, it’s rarely asked, “what in the world were you thinking until October 6, 2023?”
