A song written by the great Hoyt Axton. The song differentiates between "the dealer", who mainly sells weed and other softer drugs, and "the pusher", a seller of harder and more dangerous drugs. It's only the pusher that's being condemned here.
"God damn the pusher man!" Now I know where that random phrase comes from! Been in my head for decades, but I don't think I've ever heard this song. Thank you!!
Steppenwolf was great. One of the songs of my childhood. Hoyt Axton was great, as well. Now I have to find his version. I learned something today. Happy New Year!
Hoyt Axton had his own version that's kind of freaky too. In case you don't know Hoyt ,also an actor , played the father in Gremlins who brings them home which starts all the craziness.
Back in the late 70's my friends and I were surfing near the Hunting Beach pier in So Cal and across Pacific Coast Highway there was a little club, no more than a glorified bar, called The Golden Bear. On the marquee it said Steppenwolf Tonight so we bought tickets...came back later and walked in...around the stage there were seat, like a stripper bar lol, with sings that said Reserved....we removed the signs and sat down...server came over and told us that the seats are reserved...my friend said "Yea we reserved them last week" server says Oh OK...we sat less than five feet from the band...even got a handshake from John Kay!
You should definitely hit "Monster." It hurts, in that it's one of those songs we damn well should have learned from by now And Yet Here We Are, but it's very good.
Try "Heroin" by Velvet Underground. Hoyt Axton was an interesting character. He had a decent movie career such as Gremilins, Black Stallion. Also, did some writing for Three Dog Night.
Monster, Don't Step on the Grass Sam, Magic Carpet Ride, Rock Me... lots of great songs they did in the end 60s. This one is used for the movie Easy Rider as was Born to Be Wild. Nina Simone did a soul version of it a few years later. But actually the song is not even by them but written in the early 60s.
Early teen memories of sitting in Gary C's bedroom listening to this and Hendrix, while admiring his closet door which was covered in Export A sleeves.
Gads! I was twelve & an ignoramous. Christians didn't much take to that particular song is the first thing I remember, it was all about 'Born To Be Wild' from the same album but eventually the whole 'G.D The Pusher' thing eventually blew into town. 1967 was basically the early dawn of recording better & better dynamics, it took George Martin of the Beatles fame to drag the entire recording industry into 'real' stereophonic reproduction. It was around before 67, but struggling to image a soundstage correctly. Thanx, it was a fair amount for a 12yo to take on but we had little choice then.
turned up here knee deep in post festive jigsaw angst, heard this and thought wow why doesn't this get played as regularly as smog on the tyne or fog on the vatter? excellent. as u say JP , sung with passion
🍺🥃🥂🍻🍬🍾🌟⚪🔘🔴🥂🍺🥃🍺Happy New Year Wanna start with a smile on your face 2025........see Hocus Focus by Focus. Midnight Special. The group Focus is fantastic. Jan Akkerman etc...
It was a good song, but my favourite "pusher song" is *Sugar Man* by the now late, great *Sixto Rodriguez* , which is full of sounds ahead of its time by years, and tells its story "from the inside" by the addict, with more love than loathing for the stuff that's killing him. Beautiful magic hollowing out someone's life. Two sides of the same sinking coin. (Sorry. Had to try for a "poetic sound", there, to go along with the lyrics - which you could put in a book and just publish that way, as is.) ua-cam.com/video/E90_aL870ao/v-deo.html
I absolutely love Steppenwolf but I'm kind of disappointed that this is one of the three songs of theirs that are ever played. Definitely not their best in my opinion. Love your channel JP!
It was in the film Easy Rider. Great track.

Monster should be the next song by them.
Haven't listened to this track in decades! Thanks for refreshing my memory!

Steppanwolf - talk about a blast from the past
Ooh! This is a song I had forgotten, sublime! That lead guitar tone, very like early John Lees from Barclay James Harvest! Lovely!

I suggest the version off of the Steppenwolf Live album.

Joy to the World is written by him as well, if I’m remembering correctly
Real music! This sounds so good! 😊

Think about a 12yo being exposed to the likes of Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane as well as Steppenwolf. Kerplunk! Mind blown at 12
Happy New Year
Don't miss the Muzak version of this, called "Gee Whiz The Pusher Man".
LOVE IT Thank you

A few guys in their early 20's.
