- In this week’s podcast we bring together two brothers - Charles Powell and Jonathan Powell.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
Charles Powell, Lord Powell, advised Margaret Thatcher on foreign policy from 1983 to the end of her premiership.
Seven years after he'd left Number 10 his younger brother Jonathan Powell moved in, as Chief of Staff to Tony Blair.
Both men still travel the world, Charles Powell for business and Jonathan Powell mediating on conflicts.
Gary sat down with them in the aftermath of the leaked memos home from the British Ambassador in Washington.

One of the best political interviews I've seen for a while.
I love the chemistry between these three gentlemen. The interview was really pleasurable to watch, and interesting to boot!
Britain is really broken. The voices in Europe wanting you to Etsy have diminished
Excellent, substantive interview. Just what I'm looking for!
I don’t think that the UK ambassador to the US is shameful at all. The man has spoken to the truth and in fact what the world has been saying behind closed doors anyways. He just happened to get caught. I think he should be applauded for saying it as it is.
Andreas Venizelou I’m pretty sure they meant that it was shamefull that there were leaka. Not that the leaks contained critizism of Trump.
Two huge titans in the face of fanatical pygmies in the form of Farage and Widdecombe et al
Another great interview from Gary and the Channel 4 team. Thanks. Interesting perspective on rancorous times.
Great video
Basically: Trump 2 is coming.
This is what’s wrong with modern day politics, wealthy politicians funded and advised by wealthy corporations and people.
Well, we've all seen how a broader consultation worked out! , and now it's time to get on with Brexit.
political nervous breakdown , very true !!
@swave158 Well actually war was merely a way of monetising that discontent and processing it by exchanging the deaths of other people's kids for cash and geopolitical ventures - it's much harder to create the conditions for war when the mendacious good guy / bad guy narratives spun by people like this for "the plebs" can be deconstructed real-time by hearing from the other side.
I've met both brothers and they are complete gents
These 2 chaps should be listened to.
It just goes to show that the government isn't run by the poster child, but the brainy geniuses behind the scenes. Don't bully geeks, kids, they'll be in charge and you'll never know it!
The younger one seems down to earth but the older one insists on being called POLE (his version of Powell) He's so far up his own ars€ even his brother laughs at him.
"Pretentious, moi?".
🤣😂🤣
12:20 It doesn't have too, if you take this setback as an opportunity for reform, go a single transferable vote system for you MPs for an example, like Australia has (if you swing that right you may even be able to get them as a partner in trying to strengthen the commonwealth). Then You may come out of this stronger then well, not ever before but stronger than you have been since the loss of the empire.
Doesn't the guy on the right feel a bit like Sir Humphrey... in a good way I mean.
Edit they really are Humphrey and Bernard.
Please remember the writers of Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister had two inside moles who leaked information about the civil service to them - the moles were the late Lady Falkender and the still alive Bernard Donoughue (Baron Donoughue). So they knew what was real, and Sir Humphrey exists to this day in 2019, just in a much more blander form.
Then
"fortunate oiks"
It’s just politics these days
Did you notice that these two are Ex-civil servants who are part of the Establishment who both revealed a deep distain for populism and Nigel Farage? That reveals alot: they are not supportive of the Brexit democratic execution of Brexit. The only answer which impressed me was Charles Powell saying that the U.K. politicians and Parliament are obsessed with "Brexit, Brexit, Brexit...
obseessed with one subject."
How to
-advise-
prime
Ministers
There is NOT how to advise ! The diplomats to be as frank, terse and unvarnished as they can in reporting and informing the government ! nothing else !

9:40 Well Is't that ironic, you plan to come crawling back to the feet of the dragon throne less than 200 years after essentially demolishing their thousand year empire. Turns out they were right after all doesn't it, you were only the last in the line of barbarian conquerors who for a short time inconvenienced the middle kingdom before ending up as a client state.
Switch off. Boring farts
Thank you for your incredibly insightful comment.
Advising Blair. Switched off after that.
@@JudeLind You're a sensitive boy aren't you Jude?
Well said. unless people give the impression that their opinions complement my own, I'm not interested.
@@JudeLind It's nothing to be ashamed of, you're just a sensitive boy.
@@fterimage Embarrassing.
Always worth hearing people out. Atleast in interviews, speeches I usually just skip because it's usually just rhetoric anyway.
