GARNET - Montana’s Best Ghost Town
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 сер 2024
- Like most mining boom towns, Garnet, (named after the semi-precious stones found in the area), saw its fair share of comings and goings. With the post office closing in 1942, and nearly all of the residents leaving, Garnet was added to the list of ghost towns in Montana. Fortunately the Bureau of Land Management stepped in, preserving the last remaining structures ensuring that Garnet remained Montana’s best preserved ghost town.

Garnet ghost town is certainly one of the best ghost towns we’ve come across. You are left to your own accord to roam around freely. Most of the buildings are left open, some even being furnished, giving you an insight into what life would have been like in the late 1800s early 1900s. Join us as we explore this fascinating, best preserved ghost town in Montana.
Remember to check your notification bell, subscribe if you haven’t already and give us a huge Thumbs Up - It really helps the channel and is free to do. Thank you, we really appreciate your support.
We post new content every Tuesday 7am PST and hope to see you on all our adventures.

I think the short ceilings and small doors and windows were more about keeping the places warm in the winter than the size of the occupants. Awesome video. Love you guys!
Good point. Thanks. Glad you enjoyed our explore.
this was actually a town full of little people. those cabins were like mansions to them. true story
@@jeffs869 🤣
I was hoping you'd do Garnet. Awesome place. As always great video editing. Y'all are amazing. See ya soon.😊
Thanks Richard. See you soon.
Garnet is one of my personal favorite ghost towns. Set in deep forest, imagine how hard it was to get around in deep winter snows. Just love the old photos, they tie the past to what we see now. You two work so well together, makes for a great time for us viewers.
Thank you for the compliments. We do our best to entertain. Still have lots to learn and improve on.
Glad you enjoyed our explore. And yes those winters would be a nightmare!
Absolutely love that they're taking care of the town. Gives you a chance to imagine what life was really like back then. Could almost hear the honky tonk piano .
We love how they’ve done this as well. The immersive experience is what makes these places extra special.
This setting is so majestic. Gramma Candy
It certainly is Beautiful.
That was so interesting. I absolutely love this type of video. Thank you, Andrea for all of your research. It's always so appreciated. It amazes me that people can wander around freely. I hope that everyone who visits is as respectful as both of you are. Thankfully, the town is being preserved. EXCELLENT video
🏚🏚👏🏻🌞🌲
Yes Rhonda. There’s people living there year round to maintain and keep an eye on the place.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Love this history of Garnet! So much to unpack in this video! Defo a great explore! All the light-hearted giggles from yous two are always a joy to see, too!
Joey. Where have you been. We’ve missed you.
Thanks for your support and wonderful comment.
Hope everything is going ok your end. ❤️
@@PinInTheAtlas Putting pins in my atlas, obvs! 😁 I haven't missed a video, yet...at least, I don't think I have. ❤
I've heard Montana is a beautiful place all year round. Another great location. Thanks for sharing 😊
Montana is absolutely stunning Gary. We have lots more to explore in that state can’t wait to get back there!
@@PinInTheAtlasI can't wait to see what you find

Thank you so much Ralph. We truly do appreciate that as we do put a lot of work into each video. That does sound like yucky weather, we chase the sunshine as much as possible.
Your photography improves with each video. I love this channel. It satisfies my wish to be there
Thank you Virginia. We still have a lot to learn and lots to improve on.
Got busy this morning so I will be having a beer with my pin
🍻
Thanks for the Levity. The World could use more of that. Was close to Garnet, last year, when I was in Missoula. Definitely a Pin, Indeed.
Another great explorer.
Thank you
You served us a video with some terrific awesomeness! Top notch explore! Thank you.
You’re welcome Kerry.
Awesome explore! You two are th best.................
Thanks Bill glad you enjoyed it.
What a unique ghost town, in such a beautiful area too. But I bet the winters were horrible, in Montana? Yep! Thanks for the wonderful tour.
Yep. Lots of snow!!!
Glad you enjoyed it Lorna
What a beautiful place, and a lot to explore. This is the nicest ghost town I’ve seen , through videos, thanks to you! Great job.
You’re welcome Becky. Yes lots there. We didn’t put everything into the video. If we had it would have been several hours long. There’s hiking trails there too but we ran out of time. One for you to “pin”
Great place. It's on my list.
I really enjoyed that town. Thanks! So cool😊
Thank you Colleen. Much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed our explore.
A lovely, well-maintained, ghost town - delightful. AND, wait for it - - - a 3-holer to boot! Wonderful! 😂 Steven, sorry to see your knees acting up. Pray you're doing better now. Also, trust y'all have gotten out of the cold and snow (southern NM or AZ?). Thanks for sharing. You 2 make the missus and I wish we could spread our wings more. So happy to share in all your interesting, informative adventures. Bon Voyage!
Thanks David. You and Virginia are always with us on our explores.
Yes we’re south. No snow.
It s a gem as far as ghost towns go 😊 As always Steve has to look impressive 😂😊. Your right Andrea,, at night is the best time. You can actually hear sometimes noise as if life is still going on.
Would absolutely love to be able to do a night time visit at locations like this, just to see👀.
@@PinInTheAtlas it wouldn’t hurt. You d be surprised 😯
@tinadelwiche416 just if we could get it on video. We haven’t seemed to have much luck with that part as of yet! We will keep trying though.
@@PinInTheAtlas 👍👀
My dad, while he was in the Air Force, was stationed in Great Falls, MT. for three and a half years. Western MT. is full of mining ghost towns that were fun to discover and explore as a family. This was back in the 70's for us, so not sure how much is left. The vandalism and neglect can take a toll.
Unfortunately most have gone now. Can never understand people who want to destroy! Crazy in the head if you ask us!
@@PinInTheAtlas I appreciate your exploration and documentation of these historical sites. BTW, we were stationed in Colorado Springs afterwards....Colorado has amazing mining and ghost town history. Some of the best I've seen....
@@blw957 we do have quite a lot pinned in CO especially in the springs area. The weather is a biggy as lots of the roads don’t open until June apparently. Steve does struggle with high altitude and then there’s the $. Other explorers have told us it’s quite pricey. But it’s definitely on the list.
@@PinInTheAtlas I look forward to exploring them with you. BTW, I love ❤️ your channel!
@@blw957 thank you so much we really appreciate the support!
Soooo interesting, thanks for the details 🤩⭐️😎
Well done again you blokes and along with some excellent history of the place that you have put together makes for a complete explanation of what took place all those years ago so keep 'em coming Cheers
Thank you both. Happy you enjoyed it. Yep every Tuesday for sure. See you on our next adventure.
Great video! So much information ❤
Thanks you Jen! Miss you guys!!!!!!!!❤️
A nice bit of summer for these cold winter months! Fun explore and video! It's easy see Andrea prefers a man in a kilt and not the college preppy look! I have a hard time imagining the school having a nurse of any kind though. I can remember my grade school with over a thousand students having a nurse, but she also helped run the bookstore and whatever else they needed help with. I had classes in an old 1870s school house and the coat room had an area where problem students were put. Another teacher would come in for a minute to witness a board to bottom exercise and then the student got to sit on a chair for a while and ponder his poor behavior. The tall Victorian ceilings made a really nice echo when the board contacted the butt ... and even though we could not see the paddling ... we heard the results very clearly!
When we were naughty at school we had to stand in the corner facing the wall or outside in the corridor. And wowbetide you if you moved. Off to the headmaster for the slipper!
@@PinInTheAtlas The board paddle was still in fashion during my school years! Some were decorated and quite fancy. They hung inside the teacher's locker and were quite visible when they would get into their locker. I avoided having any contact with one, but I'm sure I was one of the few to be threatened with it ... for being "too quiet"!
@normstephens8354 Steven would have had the paddle at least once everyday
@@PinInTheAtlas I can believe that! You look like the type to be attracted to bad boys! :-) I can only remember one girl getting the board in all those years. I don't remember what Gail did now ... only that she did!
Nice work & video 👍
Thank you.
Hello from Scott and Becky. We love your video. Listen to the section of the boots. At 26:33 you have a friend. A laughing child. 🤗
Enjoy your travels.
@@BeckyFlorea-v7z glad you enjoyed our video Scott and Becky. It’s amazing what the mics pick up.
Hope you join us on all our adventures.
Very nice place. With that missing window. I would say the up keep is a little shoddy. People just do not appreciate how special a place like that is.
It certainly is a wonderful spot Ken. They’re people who live there that maintain the place. Yes agreed it is special.
Interesting old town set in beautiful scenery. Log construction with chinking is certainly robust and stands the ravages of time well.
They do say that this is the most well preserved ghost town in America. They do have people living on site to help maintain it.
The stage coaches didn't have the springs to cushion you from the rough road, either. I learned that back in elementary school.
A bumpy ride! Ouch
I have an idea. Why not you two be the Mayor and start the town over again. Now that would be cool. But I am like everyone else I really enjoyed the tour and all of the information that was provided by you two. Thanks a lot really appreciate that
Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed our explore. See you on our next adventure.
2nd f;oor doorway in Colorado was for going in and out because the snow got that deep. Gramma candy
Hi Andrea & Steve,
Interesting explore of an old mine boom town. I can only imagine the hardships endured spending a harsh winter there. Were you able to locate the mine workings? Thanks for taking us along.
We didn’t see the mine workings but there’s a hike you can do (we didn’t have time) maybe that takes you to them.
Glad you enjoyed the video.
Thanks for the tour! Wow, that's a bargain for $3?!?!. There was a weird add I couldn't skip in the middle of the video... It said "skip add" but I tried everything and I just ended up watching some goofball talk to me... 😂
It absolutely was a bargain and there was so much there to check out. Really we will have to investigate that further as you know sometimes UA-cam does some strange things that we have no control over!
😂
That was really cool. I noticed that most of the stoves were in poor shape. The bar wasn't the proper place for ladies. Unless they were saloon girls. You would have think there would have been a cemetery not to far away from town. Especially; for being a mining town. Did you know that the first National Park was sign by Lincoln. True story.
We thought there would have been a cemetery too. They used to take them down the hill to the nearest town apparently.
This is awesome . I checked maps , about 5 hour drive . I will try to get there. Thanks
Go in from the north as the road is better. We camped at the bottom of the hill
Well hello nice to see a 👻 town that you are able to roam around in and at about over 7000 ft leval and green grass and trees .Where there areas that you could see where the mining had taken place ? Well the good thing of being able to walk in the buildings to see how they were built and how people lived and yes the creepyyyyyyy floors .And yes i have been to BODIE CAL. P.S. For about a year I've had some thing to mail to you it seems UA-cam might have eliminated that 🤔⛏️🇺🇸and i do not do paypal at all.
Glad you enjoyed our explore Case. It is an impressive place. Lots to see there. We spent about 6 hours filming and there were hikes we just didn’t have time to do.

I visited Garnet in 1963 before the BLM took over. Saw more collapsed buildings back then. In the 1990's, I had a duplicate set of my photos made and donated them to the BLM museum. Did you happen to see them? One shows my 1956 Chevy Suburban parked "downtown".
Oh wow! That would have been amazing. Sadly no we didn’t see them, we popped into the museum only briefly to ask about why there isn’t a cemetery.
How tall did you say you are Andrea? How old is he. That guy that's always with you.
Lots of people back in the day weren't very tall 5'6was tall back then
Steve, how tall is Steve compared to your 5 foot 3 and half inches, (and that half inch is very important).
I’m 5 foot 3 and a half and Steve is 5 foot 10 and a half!
👍👍👍👍👍
So if the government pays you to move there where do you live at and is there any electrical?
Not sure what you mean Irene. People who work for the park service live there in their rigs. Not sure if they live in any of the cabins. A couple of cabins can be rented. Maybe generators for electric
Cool ghosttown; not as 'clinical' or restored like some other historic places. I don't really like those 'well manicured' places.
Yes. They have left most everything as it was and are maintaining it. You can even book a stay in one of the miners cabins
when talking about things you are looking at please show them.
We do our best Sera to film as much B role as possible. As you can imagine we film the scene several times from different angles. Sometimes they just don’t come out on camera. Either too dark, reflections or a host of other things.
You should skip to the lew
the music is a little too loud. It muffles your narative.
Levels sounded good to me 😊

Also when your in a place and you say, oh Wow look at this. and then you walk away and we don’t get to see what your oh wowing about.
Thanks for being a long time subscriber. We do subscriber shout outs in the beginning of our videos, guess you must have missed those.
