The Fantaisie-impromptu is part of the triumphant recital Cyprien Katsaris gave on 17 October 1999 in the fabulous surroundings of the main auditorium of Carnegie Hall in New York on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Chopin’s death. Katsaris presents us with anything but a routine reading of Chopin’s work. His approach is highly personal: unexpected counter-tones in his turn of phrase, tempi that are often unusual, breaks and contrasts informing dynamics, articulation and pedal work. The New York audience was manifestly electrified, giving a standing ovation, repeatedly calling the pianist back for several minutes and finally wresting from him three encores.

How did 10% of people give thumbs down? He played Chopin how he is to be played...? And bringing out all of the inner melodies. He gets A+ across the board from me: playing, transcribing, teaching/masterclass, views on music and competition, etc. Katsaris is the most underappreciated classical pianist out there.

He plays great, no question. But it’s not a Chopin how it should be played. He plays it a lot too fast. Since Chopin added no specification of tempo to this piece, only “allegro agitato” it’s clear that he didn’t intend it to be that fast. Allegro is at around 120 bpm, and agitato means “busy” or “emotional”. He plays it at around 200 bpm. Of course when playing Chopin (or others from that time) you have some freedom, but not that much. He plays it so fast because that’s what every professional piano player tries when playing this piece: to be the fastest. They make a competition out of it and that’s clearly not what Chopin wanted.

TwelfthRoot2 yep! He plays with rubato and feeling, and just everything that Chopin wanted!

@@JohnDoe-zo2ww allegro can be waaay faster than 120bpm. Allegro agitato is even faster of course. And he's nowhere near 200 lol
Instead of complaining about speed, how about you notice all the thoughts he put into the interpretation : the "agitato" feeling in his phrasing, never played the same passage twice the same way, incredible and logical dynamics and pedaling.
The extra middle voice it the last part was a bit too much for me though, but it is interesting.
There's so many positive aspects in this performance we could discuss, but you only talk about the one problem that's not even a real problem xD

@@MattPark75 What a dumb comment. There is nothing romantic about this ''interpretation''. Fantaisie impromptu is my favorite piece and this was sh**t performance, I like to play it relatively fast too but this trash ''interpretation'' is basically speeding up on parts where it should be slower and more poetic. Just pure garbage performance of this piece tbh

@@lukas4132 if Fantasie Impromptu is your favorite piece, then you need to listen to more music dude . Listening to only one piece of music over and over doesn't make you an expert , it just means your brain can't take too much information , just like how you can't take this interpretation of music .

As a listener/ audience, It appears to be a tad bit fast, to an extent that rob's away the beauty and comprehension of this great song. I don't understand what his rush is. Piano songs/ interpretations sound best when the dynamics/ tempo sound appropriate to be enjoyed by the audience. A small mistake and you are making space for complaints. You are playing to please the crowd, not yourself. No matter how great a pianist may be, this is something that he/she needs to understand.
