I built swimming pools for many years and have thousands of hours on a backhoe. If, on the first pass, you start shallow and let the bucket go gradually deeper as you pull it towards you, you will have a nice, clean, sharp 90° angle between the grass (top of ground) and the sidewall of the ditch, instead of raising the bucket and making the ground break upwards wherever it chooses. I’m not better than anyone else. I’m just chiming in bc I miss running a backhoe. I’m retired now and thinking of buying one just to play with. Lol
Like a surgeon. I love watching your vids but this one hits me in the feels. It reminded me of watching my father he was a operator for mountain bell for 25 years.
Buy them a ice tea or something they deserve alot of credit your service is deeply appreciated thanks take care good looking backhoe like the style way to go ! Joe
That was the best video of a backhoe digging a ditch that I have ever seen! On the serious side, glad you'll be able to "get connected" / hardwired onto the internet, and good trenching work. No big deal having some extra dirt to push in, like you say.... easier to pack.
You should have borrowed our Ditch Bitch Chris. It's powered by a 350 Chebby and trenches at 3.5 mph while making a 4' deep 8" wide trench. You just have to watch out for those black roots with all those tiny different color wires in them. LOL
Love your videos. My son lives in Concord, NC and works in the IT department at Carolina Cat. I know he would like to see a Cat instead of a Volvo, but that's another story. Thanks and hope you get cable soon.
I agree!! We have satellite internet and they don’t give us enough data to watch your great videos!! Satellite internet sucks, but thats all we can get!
Do you have any trouble switching controls from your John deer to your excavation equipment. I’ve been watching the controls and it seems to me they are backwards from each other, or is it just me.
I'd put a conduit or sleeve on each side of that trench if it makes any sense at all for a future water, gas, etc line, even if just to serve maybe an entrance to your property. I see 24" trenches for exactly the purpose of two lines.
How long of a ditch did you have to dig? When I first saw the thumbnail for this, I thought it was the video you uploaded of digging the power line to the trailer several years ago. thought you might have started slipping in your old age. Everything going well with the house? Will you be in it by Thanksgiving?
When you reach out with the bucket and pull it back to create a flat bottom to the trench. Does the backhoe automatically move it back such that the trench is flat or is that all manually controlled by you?
On this machine it is manual. He did upload a video a while back where he demoed a computerized trenching system to control that - it's still manual, but you have a screen in front of you telling you if you're high or low.
As the The President Of The Amateur Crooked Backhoe Trenching Association I must say on behalf of the membership that sadly you clearly do NOT comply with our Charter ..... !!! Seriously, did you mark that out with guides or use a laser that we can’t see or something? Do you use a part of the ho, like the boom or dipper to gauge your distance from the tarmac? Any advice gratefully received especially as I need to trench my house pad very soon! More power to you and thanks for all the great videos. PS more backhoe maintenance and technical shit like how to do tricky stuff please? Have a 580e with one reasonable brake, 2 wheel drive, leaking everywhere and a 15* slope and 100 acres that requires constant thought and vigilance so as to stop killing your self. Haven’t had so much fun in decades!!!
cognitor900 You made me laugh. And your situation sounds like mine: same 580e machine, funky brakes, 2wd, slope, just fewer acres. Hope I'm not the first to die. But so much fun!
That looks great. Top notch job! Is that a line just for your house? Just wondering where it will tie in and why the cable company is not digging the ditch for it? Thanks!
If you come dig a ditch for me will it get internet installed at my place? I'm beyond worn out trying to get a square answer out of any of the high speed providers on what it would take. I basically called and said "I'll pay for the whole install, just need to know who to write the check to" and they still don't seem to want to help out. The thought of running my house off an air card is hard to stomach after years of super high speed cable in the 'burbs.
Trenchers are a pain in the ass! Up here I NW PA we have rock, clay, hard pan you name it. I can dig a ditch twice as fast with my excavator. I'm in the same boat you are with that ditch. My kubota 40 excavator with thumb has 14 inch pin in thumb, so narrowest bucket I have is 18 inch. Kinda overkill for waterline and electric.
Too bad you weren't doing this in Hawaii in May. Could've gave Pele a fast track to the sea without taking out a single house. (Would have needed more excavators working as a team to dig the ditches fast enough)
I had a bucket you could borrow, Charlie's coming up my way to pick up a generator he could have took it back "12" it fits a 310 G I think the G and he E had the same linkage.
Just tried my tractor back hoe atatchment...I am awful! The attachment works.fine but the operator is not so good at this point. Is there a video where he says the stick movements he is making out loud? Maybe that would help me.
Tony Hawkinson, that's because all of the utilities are up by the road. He's on private land with no ROWs or easements. He's lived out there long enough that locates have probably been done in the past.
There is nothing better than generic command controller sticks position Case change his new sticks command position it was easier if they would continued with the universal position
You could watermark your video's with your logo so that acts as a bit of a deterrent. Easy enough to do depending on what video editing software you are using.

Chris....it aint overkill at all.....dude you work hard and I admire you wanting to do it so it is done right....like everything else you do bro!!!!!!
Talk about a straight line, Great job Christopher!!!
Like a surgeon. I love watching your vids but this one hits me in the feels. It reminded me of watching my father he was a operator for mountain bell for 25 years.

Chris, make sure you put in 1 or 2 spare conduits for future use, it may save trenching in the future.
I just love your Video's Chris.
That's some interesting looking soil you've got there. Thanks for the video.
Its a pleasure to see a good machine operator, nice job
You are very smooth with that, always like your vids👍
came up on suggestions 5years later! looks like a sweet machine to operate! Amazing growth aince then.
Looks good. Hope to see the house again.

haha yeah they will get them every time!
CumminsDslPwr, I can't believe your cheating on me☻ How long have you been seeing this "Chris" fellow? ☻☻
Sorry Jeff but he sent me a Pushy Six hat and I am just trying to get even with him......LMAO !
Good video bud, I just bought my backhoe looking forward to getting good w it.
Love your videos. My son lives in Concord, NC and works in the IT department at Carolina Cat. I know he would like to see a Cat instead of a Volvo, but that's another story. Thanks and hope you get cable soon.
cool deal, i have a friend who works there
Hahah this guy is hilarious 👌👍🤘 Killing it with that backhoe too!! 🤩🤩🤩
Jason would be impressed your ditch is straight and clean, its not easy digging a trench with a backhoe when your used to running an excavator.
Are you lifting your outrigger or lifting off with the hose? Is that backhoe 4wd? Minr is, it makes pushing off difficult.
You don't have a 2 wheel drive option??
Think you could teach some of the digger drivers in UK how to trench in straight line. Seems to b so easy for you Chris.
Your the man😏👌
A JD with CAT controls, good job!
There JD controls. He never switched it.
Operators delight! Nothing in your way and straight ditch! No hardpan! What else can you ask for!
I agree!! We have satellite internet and they don’t give us enough data to watch your great videos!! Satellite internet sucks, but thats all we can get!
It would be nice to see an update on the house. You own the backhoe and it does the job.
Smooth operator with those old controls! Nice job!
Feel your pain with the internet. I'm in the same boat.
Do you have any trouble switching controls from your John deer to your excavation equipment. I’ve been watching the controls and it seems to me they are backwards from each other, or is it just me.
Theres standard control and joystick control I'm used to joystick and im wondering the same thing
Did you say ....." longer videos" may be coming our way? That'll be great.
i could watch hours of this.
I'd put a conduit or sleeve on each side of that trench if it makes any sense at all for a future water, gas, etc line, even if just to serve maybe an entrance to your property. I see 24" trenches for exactly the purpose of two lines.
Ever see “Caddyshack”? .... “well, the world needs ditch digger too” lmao!!
I love those old school deere and case tractors with the sticks instead of joy controls thats how i learned as a kid
Serious question, why don't you use the extendahoe to stretch out farther so you have to move less?
Skillful job: Is there a Part 2?

Does the backhoe automatically move it back such that the trench is flat or is that all manually controlled by you?
He is making the bucket flat. It just looks like it is automatic because he is so fluid with the motions.
On this machine it is manual. He did upload a video a while back where he demoed a computerized trenching system to control that - it's still manual, but you have a screen in front of you telling you if you're high or low.
Watch his right foot!

i didnt use anything. usually its crooked as hell, guess i impressed myself too this time
cognitor900 You made me laugh.

Thanks!
the cable company wanted 8k to dig it, I said ill do it
letsdig18 wow what a rip-off.
I love it when I can say ill do it, the look on there there face is priceless
letsdig18 I do subcontract work burying conduit for a cable company in PA, the price people are willing to pay to have internet is unbelievable
Only question I have is why don't you separate your top soil and clay?
Are you going to put one or two conduits in the ditch?
What type of camera do you use?
All the equipment I use these days has joysticks. I would love to run that machine.
If you come dig a ditch for me will it get internet installed at my place? I'm beyond worn out trying to get a square answer out of any of the high speed providers on what it would take. Did you get the grade right do the data flows?
How is the house goin? Love your videos.
Looks pretty good
Great video
Clean trench buddy! Greetings from California!
@letsdig18 like the backhoe. might have to get one soon.
nice video dude more please !!

Looks good it will be nice to have a landline I have tried the satellite internet it sucks
how is your new house going you should do a update on your new house being built
How come your not using a mini excavator?
Unless your doing irrigation i hate a damn trencher which is odd xause its the first piece of equipmenti learned to run
Just tried my tractor back hoe atatchment...I am awful! The attachment works.fine but the operator is not so good at this point. Is there a video where he says the stick movements he is making out loud? Maybe that would help me.
So nice when you can just dig without blasting through rock ledge.
It is what it is! I hear ya..
you use what you got.
Overkill is ALWAYS better than underkill.
I don’t see a single flag for locates. Just poke and hope?
Tony Hawkinson, that's because all of the utilities are up by the road. He's on private land with no ROWs or easements. He's lived out there long enough that locates have probably been done in the past.
@letsdig18 i had to watch heavy metal learning to figure out how to do trenching on a flat surface and a hill
At least you don’t have to do it by hand
👏👏👍🇬🇧
As long it get the job done
Pain in the ASS ,, sounds like my ex...
Ahhh the old 2 stick better than armrest controls but thats my opinion
did the city or county come out and F with you about permits, safety warning signs and barricades lol
There is nothing better than generic command controller sticks position Case change his new sticks command position it was easier if they would continued with the universal position
nice
Did you know that their are pirates on you tube that are stealing clips of your videos and putting them on there channels
it wouldnt surprise me
Ive seen them to the bastards
You could watermark your video's with your logo so that acts as a bit of a deterrent. Easy enough to do depending on what video editing software you are using.
Shit never used a Laser and had to adjust for pin wear, Loi
put in fiber if u can
That Video title so much clickbait :P
Trenchers are a pain in the ass.. I can't stand trenchers..
nice cut
Spoil pills aren't 2 feet

I teach a heavy equipment operators course at the local trade school. I'll be happy to show you some tips and train you in operating heavy equipment.
