Absolutely brilliant singer and actress. LOVE her chest voice! She makes Abigaille truly human and so vulnerable that I feel sorry for her. Thank you, Julia, for honoring your work so earnestly. You are a great source of inspiration!
A sadly under-recorded soprano, one of the greats. Thanks for posting this, absolutely superb and in my opinion even better than the recorded version on her first Verdi arias disc from the 1990s.
Julia Varady excels in every role that I've heard her in: Mozart, Wagner, Verdi, Strauss... She is one of the most secure soprano voices that I've ever heard. The baritone is quite good too and what a set!
She is really good, I agree that she is a very underappreciated artist. My favourite in this role will always be Ghena Dimitrova, but I can appreciate other renditions as well. Brava Varady. She shows great technique and expression.
¡Gracias! Es increíble que sea tan magnífica en Verdi y a la vez una soprano wagneriana sin par. Muy agradecido por el post de esta maravillosa cantante
Fantastic! She puts other singers of this part to shame. I find her Abigaille much better than Dimitrova, Souliotis, Guleghina et al and second only to La Callas in her pristine 1949 best. Julia sings with her whole being, the voice, face, body, acting, passion, all is there. An underrated, poorly recorded singer, her 1982 Berlin AIDA with Pavarotti and Barenboim is an absolute reference. Was she a difficult artist? I tried to see her AIDA at the London ROH in the 1990s and she cancelled, twice!
Is it always necessary to invoke Callas as the benchmark in this part?--kneejerk Callas worship, I would say. Her sole complete recording is unlistenable--the sound is so distorted many of the details are lost. As for Varady, I love her in the more lyrical Strauss and Mozart and the more lyrical-dramatic Verdi, but I think she is overparted here. However, she is such a superb artist she is able to husband her resources shrewdly in this cruelest of cruel parts.

The great singing actress of the 80s and mid 90s
Wonderful dramatic singer

She is great ! Is it Paris production?
This is a top notch performance. I do prefer a heavier voice eg. Dimitrova
