I tried to play this song back in the day and failed miserably. So much respect for Theolonius Monk and Chester making a go of it and pulling it off perfectly. Chester drops two sticks and you’d never know if you weren’t looking closely. What a good row of it.
Chester Thompson is one of the finest drummers that most people have never heard about. His drumming is brilliant and he is just as much at home with jazz as he is rock and roll. One of the true drumming greats! This is just sublime jazz here!
Scott Murphy "that most people have never heard about" ! Well he's playing with Zappa since 1973, Genesis since 1977 and with Phil Collins since 1982. Sometimes people have to look harder to see... But i'm ok with you, he his brilliant, as always.
Scott Murphy Cant agree more. Chester is a master. Listen to his work on the Genesis album Seconds Out from 1976/7 and be prepared to find a dark corner to hide in for a few weeks. Phil chose wisely. His playing on the Duke and Abacab tour are beyond comprehension. From the later period his riffs on Driving the Last Spike are mind bending. He is one of the best.
I've been a student of Chester since hearing his work in the mid 1970's. He is one of the finest percussionists in the last 40 years. Personally, I believe he is the best, and I don't want to hear any grief about it.
Chester's genius is that he takes what is normally straight ahead jazz and added swing and groove to it - giving it a root which a lot of straight improvisational jazz does not do - and when I tune out as a listener. He makes this interesting by giving the piece some structure and a root.
This is some bodacious put together jazz....its clean, fresh....outtasite. Dont know whos better w instruments, hell they all FANTASTIC DANG. Even the bass. This music SWINGS. This is not my type of music.....was.n ot my type of....will be MY new type of music. Woohoo
He actually has a completely different style to Phil, which is why they complimented each other so well in Genesis. Each of them can play stuff the other can't. Chester is really solid, but he can't groove like Phil. Mike Rutherford said he can only play Follow You, Follow Me properly when Phil is drumming because Chester never quite nailed the feel.
@@inglepropnoosegarm7801 Feel... Groove better? I think not. Chester has so much more of what a drummer actually is. Phil is great for someone with no drum studies other than his own.. But his techniques and range is not what Chesters is. That is just fact. Nothing to do about who we prefer. But some things are quantifiable. Follow you follow me... a easy little pop song in 4/4. Mike is also not someone who is the arbiter of groove He is just okay. Even chester talks about it!!
@@charlesyounger7159 Yes, and that isn't this. Phil can't do most of this... well. Chester is the one who inspired Phils brand x playing along with cobham. It is easy hear.
Give it up for the amazing Chester Thompson!! Let us know in the comments where in the world you're watching from.
does anybody want to give this excellent pianist and bassist some respect? Ok, I will
I will. If we had more talent / music like this today I would be most grateful.
Thank you Chester for bringing this trio together. Good synergy amongst you three.
Thank you so much for watching! We're so lucky to have Chester here in Nashville.
Love Chester Thompson. What a great man! Fan from Arlington, Virginia.

Isn't he the best?! Thanks so much for listening!

+MrWarthog59 Don't forget the Bee Gees.
Chester is hands down my favorite drummer. It's his style and sound that made me pick up drumming. Guy is next level.
@@shouldbfishing5011 He plays on every track except the Cinema Show which Bill Bruford plays (who’s another one of the greats)

You won't get grief from us, genesis0932! Chester is the best!
No question the best. His style inspired me to pick up drumming. He seems like such a humble person also.
Awesome Chester show yet another side of his diversity!!! This man plays it all!
We need a Chester cam from this. Just amazing.
Phenomenal drumming by incomparable Chester Thompson!
Chester is the goat...!👍❤️🇬🇧💪
Love Chesters work Zappa and Collins. This is cool. That keys is fire.. Bass is fucking great too
I love it when great musicians take their music to another level. This is great! And that's also a killing bass solo!
Notice the stick drop at 01:37
So cool about it, some serious relaxed grip going on there.
Chester's drumming with Genesis was great.

Ingenious!
We couldn’t be bigger fans! Thank you for watching.

That kid can play bass!!...
Let's not forget Chester's fabulous run with Frank Zappa as well.
yeah, Chester thing!
This man is a drummer like no other. He outdrums Phil Collins!

Much as I love Phil Collins, he would never have been able to do this.
