Do you check the blind spot when coming off the roundabout??
Not really but probably no harm on the bigger roundabouts with multiple lanes
Dane, I can't believe I pass in my test today! I watched all your videos, thanks do much for help me! Pass in my first tentative! I already drive for 15 years, but in the other side the car!!!
That's great news, congratulations on a fantastic day for you, safe journeys 😁👍🎉🎉

@@DaneTygheletsdrive just a quick question the signs video and questions video are they the ones that they ask in the test?

Leah the above link is a collection of my videos on theory, signs and hand signals, you could be asked any of them but if you have a good knowledge of these videos then you should be fine, best of luck.
"Signal after you have passed the exit before the one you wish to take" - Still have to think about this phrase, a real tongue twister.
But makes sense when you think about it.
😁😁 Yeah true, I know what you mean!
Thank you
That picture of the Roundabout with three Lanes. Would almost be like one you'd see near or at a Motorway?
Many thanks for your help mate
My pleasure
Great videos 👍.
A question @5:16 if with exit there a bus lane then what would be the position?
if left then while going back to drive lane do I need to signal to right ?
Thank you so much you’re very helpful
That's why they call me the Great Dane
Thank you. Very informative.
You're welcome
Thanks Dane for such a wonderful pictorial explanation. Still I have a question about one particular roundabout which I'm posting here in a hope that you will resolve the answer. In Cork, at Wilton roundabout while driving through R641 to take R849 3rd exit . In R641 we have to keep our car in far right most lane (3rd one) and approach the roundabout. There are 2 lanes in R849 3rd exit (Google map isn't showing 2 lanes). Now my query is, which lane should I join while I exit R849? Either the left lane or right lane? Thanks.
I can't answer that because I am not familiar with the junction
So when we count roundabout exits, we start counting from the first one after the one we are exiting from right?
Great video
Thank you
Hi Dane, Thanks for making wonderful video. It really improved my driving. Lately I am getting confused about lane discipline on roundabout and exiting from it(especially on 3rd exit). Generally roundabout lanes are marked with doted white lines, so car can change lanes. As per you explanation, I see you are changing lanes just before exiting the roundabout (3rd exit). Some roundabout do have 3 lanes, so if I follow this approach, I need to cross two lanes to exit from roundabout!
My instructor was explaining to come to outer lane after crossing the 2nd exit point and exit from roundabout like doing 1st exit. I am bit confused here which approach should I practice and looking for you guidance in getting this doubt cleared. Thanks,
Depends on the roundabout, I can't answer that because all roundabouts are different. Try exit in the left lane if safe but you can exit in the middle or right lane if the road markings allow.
Hi Dane, If you have to stop at the roundabout because of oncoming traffic, would You have to look at your mirrors again before moving off ? Or is it ok to keep the head moving waiting for a suitable gap
Just focus on the right and traffic already on the roundabout, don't over complicate it.
Hi Dane, your videos are such a great help. I have my test in a few days and I was watching your videos. I just had questions from what I seen in the videos.
If I dry steer on the turnabout will it go against me?
Also is it right to take roundabouts in second gear and corners in second gear also?
It's undesirable to dry steer but it's not really a mark against you, it's best to do the small and medium sized roundabouts in 2nd but the bigger ones could be done in 3rd if safe, as for corners it would usually be easier to do them in 2nd gear but it depends on the situation.
Dane Tyghe thank you for the response you’ve been a great help with your videos. Let’s hope I can pass now 🎉
Best of luck, let us how you get on
I passed!! Thank you for your videos. They were a great help.
That's great news, congratulations on your success and safe travels 😊👍🎉

Hi Dane,
I am preparing for my test. If there are two lanes on the 3rd exit. We have to stick to the right lane with right indicator until we pass the second exit and indicate left on approaching 3rd exit and aim to exit on the right lane and as we go shift to the left lane. Please do correct me if I am wrong.
Do you still teach this approach? To be honest (as I was also advised, however this is an old video so might be updated) is to indicate as you come in line with the island and start to exit into outer lane at this point, otherwise the chance of someone cutting off your exit by overtaking you in the outer lane (on your inside) is much higher, or the common scenario of someone trying to enter the roundabout too early because they think you’re going around.
I find most people don’t know how to use roundabouts
Indicate as you come in line with the island... What is this supposed to mean? I think you might want to to read up on the rules of the road.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Jesys… I’m using you’re terminology! You’re saying not to indicate until after you pass the island. I’m saying isn’t it safer to indicate asap - such as when you are just passing the island? The amount if chancers on roundabouts is shocking, and indicating after the island is too short notice.
I should read the rules of the road!?
I’m concerned that you’re an instructor when you’re getting cheeky over a question you should be able to answer!
Must not be your first time criticised (and frankly, it was a polite question!)
Is that what I said in the video? You should indicate left at the time you pass the island of the exit before your exit. I don't see where or why I would ever dispute this.
This video is on the third exit so I thought you meant only indicate as you pass the exit. But for the 3rd exit to the right you'd be indicating before the roundabout. You worded it wrong, don't worry I forgive you.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive yikes
Careful now
What happens if you are leaving the oundabout from the inside lane, but there is a car to your left (in the outside lane) either going straight or leaving? It is unlikely to happen, but what should you do? Slow down and let them pass (risk being rear-ended), or go around again?
Depends on the situation because every situation is unique. Aim to exit the roundabout in the right lane if there is one, if not exit gradually but don't cut across him- he might hold back and let you exit. If it's too awkward just go round again
Great question. See it happen in Walkinstown roundabout nearly every day. I'm near paralysed going in there even as a passenger.
I've heard about this roundabout, seems interesting
Hello Dane, I hope you are doing good. Love your videos and the explanations you provide.
I have a question, the example in the video, how do I proceed if I want to take the N1 for Longford.
I'm not quite sure what you are asking. If you're looking for directions perhaps invest in a sat nav or ask Google maps.
Hi Dane,
After I have indicated right to pull into the right lane on approach, would I continue to indicate right as I go around the roundabout until I pass the exit before the one I wish to leave on and indicate left to leave .
Thank you so much
Yes normally that's what you do, especially if you are close to the roundabout.
Hi Dane,
First of all, I'd like to thank you for your great and resourceful videos, it helped me more to spot some of my mistakes.
I have been driving over 20 years around the world, and struggle to pass the Irish Driving test for many reasons I cannot understand.
Could you please, give more advices on passing busy mini roundabouts on the following aspects:
- Signaling
- Progress (the roundabout is mini and busy which makes it full of cars all the time, and you should enter the roundabout while there is a car inside it, or you will wait forever).
ua-cam.com/video/LAND5AWMsFs/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/Ec91Xzt5qKs/v-deo.html
Did you see the above 2 videos?
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Thanks Dane, I was not aware about them, they are very helpful.
Do you think if I miss one gap I should be marked for progress? I have been marked for progress before, and did not understand how to pass a mini roundabout without being marked for grade 3 fault! You videos are great. Please, keep them up.
Thank you very much, to be honest it can depend on the situation and the discretion of the tester. You shouldn't be faulted if you miss one gap but if you repeatedly hesitate it may count against you. But be patient because a lot of the time you cannot go if the situation is very busy, there is a big difference between being over cautious and dealing with a busy mini roundabout.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Thanks for your prompt reply, and patience.
My pleasure, best wishes to you
HI Dane! Thanks for the great videos, do you have to check your blindspot when changing lanes on a roundabout? I find when I do i lose my position a little bit, any advice is appreciated! Thanks
It depends on the situation, if busy it could be a good idea to check, but do it quickly so you don't lose position
Hi Dane just a question. We have roundabouts in Australia and most of the rules are logically the same. I notice when you're exiting on the 3rd exit that you dont cros lanes till straight at the exit but the left lane folows all the way around the roundabout. do you get many accidents from people sting in that lane and basicaly getting the wat of the left turn off the 3rd exit?
If people check mirrors properly there should be no problem.
Hi Dane, what if on some roundabout there is road marking with arrows to go straight or right on the right hand lane ? Will I take position in right hand lane or still follow the 12 o clock rule ? And take position in left side lane. There is one roundabout like this in castlemugret limerick
You just obey the signs and markings
@@DaneTygheletsdrive thanks you Dane. Passed my test at Limerick Castlemungret . Your videos helped me a lot to be a better driver in general
That's the plan, well done on your success
I've encountered a roundabout with 2 "lanes" but where the lanes are divided by a continuous white line (I believe the central reserve of the roundabout used to be bigger and include the inner lane but the central part was shrunk to accommodate larger vehicles as it was narrow beforehand). Despite not knowing the roundabout, do you think you should therefore just remain in the outer lane at all times because you shouldn't cross a continuous white line?
No I don't think you should remain in the outer lane at all times because that's not always correct. I've no idea what roundabout you are talking about so I can't give you a definite answer.
Hi Dane, when taking the 3rd exit and there are two lanes but left lane becomes a bus lane few meters away can you exit in the right lane or would you still be expected to exit in the left and then look at mirrors and move out into the right lane
Probably exit right lane but this depends on the signs and markings.
Thank you for this video doing a great job congratulations!
Thank you very much
Hi Dane,
Which lane do we stay on if the third exit is at/before 12 ‘o’ clock?
Probably left
Do you have to indicate entering a roundabout even if are not taking the first exit?
What would you think?
Hi, Dane, could you please explain about the round about with some hatch marks around the island. I saw that in your video but it was not explained. I am badly confused about it and I have test on 20th where there are 2 such round abouts for the right exit.
Keep out of the hatched markings
If there a continous white line at the roundabout must you not come to a complete stop for a second?
No not usually but do so if there is a stop sign, very often there's a continuous line just beyond the broken line but you obey the one closest to you which is the broken line usually - this is yield.
Hi, Dane Might be a slightly ridiculous question here. But my instructor is an instructor and appears to also be a tester from the way he is going on and when booking my next appointment he does say can't do that day due to test. I was wondering when I'm done all 12 lessons and book my test, Can it be with him or is the tester a complete stranger? Thanks.
Ok there appears to be some confusion here. If you are in Ireland you cannot be a driving tester and an instructor, a tester is employed by the government as a civil servant, a driving instructor is a private business operator who teaches people to drive and helps them prepare for the test. I would guess that your instructor is simply an Instructor and has probably someone else already booked in (someone else who has a driving test) on that date.
You do not have to stay with the same instructor, you are perfectly entitled to change instructor if you want.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Oh, Ok. Gotcha. I'm in Ireland, Was just odd as while he was taking my name down in the book I saw some peoples name and "test" beside it. Might just be for reference or something. Do driving instructors do mock tests in Ireland?
I would do that as well in my diary, if a learner driver had a test I would mark that down as a test so I can keep the car free if they needed to rent it or whatever, very often people would do a lesson on the hour before the test which helps prepare them. I would say most instructors would certainly do a mock test.
Hi Dane, am going for my full test, using 161 Qashqai with reverse camera. Will be ok if doing reverse around the corner to focus on reverse camera or should l do 3mirrors check and shoulder?
Whatever you do make sure that you don't focus on the reverse camera, it's fine to check the camera occasionally but you must check your mirrors and shoulders for a more complete view. If I was a tester and I saw someone only checking the camera - I'd fail them there and then, no questions asked.
Ok thank you Dane l will do so
Hey Dane if i am taking the third exit with parked cars on the right should i come off the roundabout on the right lane?
Depends on the signs and markings
OMG seems so easy 😊
Not sure about that but it can be easy with knowledge and practice.
Thanks and I have a question . I get confused when to move off and which lane should I look for so that I don’t cut off in front ?Can u help me plz

Spiral roundabouts are the worst for lane discipline. I think I actually hate them the amount of times I get cut across on them. Do have to be looking everywhere.
They can certainly be challenging!

Not wrong

Avoid the hatched markings unless it's an emergency
@@DaneTygheletsdrive hi, I got my license few weeks back. Your videos have been of great help and confidence. Thanks a million.
I think I remember you from the live streams, that's great news and congratulations on passing your test 🎉
@@DaneTygheletsdrive I shall mention my name when I update you with a small help I could do to you. Thanks again.
You're very kind, best wishes
Can you please tell the people of kildare on the r445 roundabout from toughers,as all vehicles travel in the left lane,to exit third exit. Get abuse from drivers in wrong lane.
You've told them now 👌
Why you was on the right lane if you was going to turn left?
I wasn't
Oh no, uncovered an issue today passing ADi PT2 mock, test is tomorrow: I've got used to dead ahead 12 oclock use inside lane, today was a small ish 4 exit roundabout no lane markings and with 3rd exit at midday. I was told to be in second lane on approach ( not first time ); no indicate but right not left lane. I'm puzzled
Depends on the signs and road markings
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Yes, sorry forgot mention no painted on floor road markings leading up, not a large spiral type a mid size roundabout , so I've been in lane one or inside to go around outside, now told wrong
What do you mean by second lane? It's better if you just say left or right lane. And who told you about the right or left lane?
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Sorry yes, just realised, arriving into roundbout in left lane, my driving instructor today, I'm MIFFED say least
@@DaneTygheletsdrive HI AGAIN, ok so it seams this is a common grey area, how taught by 2 different camps 'or schools of thought'; camp one be in left lane for straight ahead 12 oclock and the other camp who say on multi 4 exit roundabouts or more go with right lane for exit 4 or 5 , GREAT!!! Test is tomorrow, mock was today, here is my google confirming I'm using camp one school thought irrespective number exits, midday means left lane, today got told the OTHER !!! Well not happy, thanks Dan, fwd .......
There's many factors to consider. You stay in the right hand lane - so 2 lanes on, is there also 2 lanes off? in which case, exit in the right hand lane. If there's only 1 lane off then use the 12 o'clock rule www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/appendix-roundabouts If the exit is actually straight over then you should enter in the left lane. If there were an accident, you would be held liable (see my reply to Valentine). The 12 o'clock rule has been taught for decades & if you search the web, plenty of schools still teach it.
Can we use left lane to exit 3rd exit ?
No but you could probably drift into the left lane briefly as you are exiting the roundabout
That would depend on the signs and markings, normally it would be right lane but it depends on the situation.
Never too old to have a recap but, biggest problem with multi lane roundabouts are when they are so full of vehicles that one cannot see the arrow markings on the road of the roundabout.
It can be a challenge but keeping back from the vehicle in front can help
Did not pass today and I got an unexpected mark 3 on the roundabout which the instructor didn't mention in the feedback😞very disappointed I watch your videos which are great .......in real situation it is a bit different
Sorry to hear that. If you got a grade 3 then the tester is saying that you did something serious or potentially serious. But nothing compares to the reality of driving and gaining experience.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive thank you for the reply he didn't mention anything about wrong doing on roundabouts I had the surprise to see on the evaluation sheet sent by email.I had a few roundabouts but not the challenging type .
That's unfortunate because the sharing of information helps. But remember there's no smoke without fire, if he gave you a grade 3 mark then don't overlook it just because you can't figure out how it happened. A grade 3 mark is serious.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive I would like to be on the other seat and watch a perfect driver
I would advise you to learn from the experience and try again next time, you'll be wasting time looking for a perfect driver.
very useful, your videos are awesome, but i have to tell you this roundabout implementation is the worst compared to other eu countries, its like missing the point of roundabouts
Just failed today on this one ! 3rd exit....
Better luck next time 👍
