I would imagine the government needs to have a place to develop and test extremely top-secret technology like stealth, drones, spy planes, and what have you, and Groom Lake happens to be the best place to do it. Frankly, it has to be somewhere, and I wouldn't exactly expect them to want to gleefully share their military secrets they're building and testing out there. It's a highly-sensitive military Air Force installation for a reason. The base was founded due to the government needing a place to test the U-2 spy plane and they kept it for the same type of things over the many decades. The private security "camo dudes" holding you there will be munching Doritos and swilling Gatorade, while the country sheriff takes a long drive to come arrest you for them.

One time I was driving from Reno to Las Vegas and it was about 1am. As I’m driving, I see this bright green/white light appear like it just shot down to the middle of the sky about 2-3 miles away our where the mountains were, and it stayed there for a couple seconds and then it instantly shot across the sky and disappeared. I stopped at the next gas station and people were talking about it there because of how bright it was and how fast it moved. Crazy stuff

Lots of things need to remain secret, but we must admit that there are crafts from other solar systems visiting us just was we have sent crafts to all the Planets, and Moons in our solar system. Of course, there's no history of dis-information efforts related to secret Special Access Programs ... operated by the Air Force, DIA, CIA, NSA, etc.

I would imagine the government needs to have a place to develop and test extremely top-secret technology like stealth, drones, spy planes, and what have you, and Groom Lake happens to be the best place to do it. Frankly, it has to be somewhere, and I wouldn't exactly expect them to want to gleefully share their military secrets they're building and testing out there. It's a highly-sensitive military Air Force installation for a reason.
The base was founded due to the government needing a place to test the U-2 spy plane and they kept it for the same type of things over the many decades. If anything, I would imagine the government prefers people believe they're testing extraterrestrial craft and housing alien bodies to distract from the very real and sensitive things they're doing at the base and test range.

I went to Area 52 a few times in the 1980’s. It was also a secret base in the Nevada Dessert. Not too far from Area 51. I cannot tell you what they did there.

You know just enough to be dangerous to yourself. It was public BLM land seized by the AF, not private land taken by eminent domain. There are laws limiting how much land the military can tack onto a base without special approval from Congress, so that a branch of the military can't just say all public lands are now theirs. They violated the limits. Congressional approval would have been needed to get around the limit, and they didn't bother getting that. Pretty simple.
Instead, they just changed where the border stakes were, and defended the border with armed private security.
They used to very poorly mark the border, to entrap people into crossing it, so they could arrest them, put them on a watch list, fine the crap out of them, and make them sign an NDA plus agreement to never trespass again, or else. They didn't even have a STOP sign or gate, at the border on the dirt road most tourists use to visit the border.
Now, they do have a gate and STOP sign on the main roads to the border. But if you wander the side roads or go hiking, you still need to absolutely know what you're doing, or you'll end up face down in the dirt for an hour or two, a few feet inside the border. The private security "camo dudes" holding you there will be munching Doritos and swilling Gatorade, while the country sheriff takes a long drive to come arrest you for them.

My Dad worked on Area 51 in from 1974 to 1980. I was a kid and had no idea. He didn’t say anything until 2003 when I was 34. He wouldn’t say what he did there though.
