Heard around any house USA back then after seeing this, "Dad, when are you gonna get a Colored TV!!!" Count my siblings & I in. I remember it oh so well.
My Mom bought me a pair of fish net stockings just like the white ones (big squares) in a different color. I was maybe 9yrs old & wore them on Eastern airlines flight & all the stewardesses were coming to my seat to look at them. I never felt so grown up!!
Ohhh, yes. I had these stockings in off-white, cherry color, yellow, shocking pink... Pretty permissive for both my parents as I was only 13. And I still dig this song. Thanks and stay safe everyone. 🙋🏽♀️😊
Oh wow!!!! Another memory unearthed by this amazing channel! I had a plethora of different color and patterned stockings...the precursor to today's leggings. I recall one particular pair of fishnet stockings that glowed bright florescent green under those lights while dancing at the Fillmore to "Cream" in summer of '67 in San Francisco. My dress was the same color....needless to say.... I had it goin' on!!! I recall locking eyes with a boy across the dance floor and us meeting in the middle and having a real connection only to be interrupted by my sister, Dona, dragging me away because of curfew. Drat! Who knows what twists and turns, fate and choices our lives could have taken? But, to be honest, I decided a long, long time ago to live with my choices and be happy with them because dwelling on what could of, should of, might of happened is a fruitless downer. So, I look at that chance encounter as a moment frozen in time, like a little gem sparkling. I am glad I can remember.... Thank you, Aaron! BTW, I had to get up and dance to this particular clip! Great song!!!
@Peggy Names I’d have LOVED to see you those green stockings back in the day! Maybe Dona saved you from disaster, who knows? Lol I love that you were dancing to this. It got me up off my seat too. Thanks Peggy!
@Peggy Names just one of those things Peggy...just one of those things. For the life of me I cannot recall wearing any stockings of this type except the plain old nude ones my mom picked out. They weren't panty hose either. You had to wear that stupid garter belt with the fasteners to keep your stockings in place. Hated that thing! In 1967 my mom still had her thumb on me pretty hard. I was however in dance training and we occasionally wore the typical "fishnet" stockings during a performance. I imagine all of us, if we're honest, have some regrets about a few of our choices, but that's life. The other road that looked so appealing, might not have given any of us the blessings we have today. One last thought......Peggy I sure wish you had a photo in those green stockings!!!! I DIG rock n' roll music!
@@thefirstMrsLankton So many shoulda, coulda, woulda's. Begs the question: could they have been pejorative or laudatory? Probably best left frozen in time. ;--)
Great clip! I had stockings in shocking pink, lime green, lemon yellow,+ purple( ugh). I also had the "ladder" pattern, and something called" flower burst"
Excellent clip today! This has to be one of my favorite Peter Paul and Mary songs of all of them., It's a shame that it's not in color. I'll bet it's probably stashed away in the back of the DC vault somewhere. I can just visualize the multi-colored stockings the girls wore, plus not to mention the multi-color stripe dress Maureen was wearing that day. I counted at least 6 maybe 8 different vertical stripes on her. Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe, washing your hands, practicing social distancing, and rock the time away on this channel.
This was a fun clip. I'm glad Dick called out the colors for each pair of stockings/leggings so we could get an idea of what they actually looked like. This song by PPM was quite different from the sound they're known for, and it obviously worked for them. It showed off their versatility away from Folk music, which was big during that time. Another great one Aaron, keep em coming!
I'm pretty sure Dick had to call out the colors, as only less than a quarter of television viewers had a color set. Don't forget those who can only see the program in monochrome as they live in small market cities. Heck, color narration was common well into the early 1980s, when a clip from the NBC coverage of the Election of 1980, had one of the presenters point out the colors of the map.
I always thought "I Dig Rock and Roll Music" was done by the Mamas and Papas until I found out it was Peter,Paul, and Mary. They threw me for a loop!😄 Back to the dancefloor, these '67 kids were really digging this one. If that pantyhose (which was very revolutionary in '67) feature was done today, it would be viewed as being sexist!
Loved Paul Stookey's imitation of Donovan on the hit. And the late Mary Travers...nuff said. If anything, John/Michele/Denny/Cass sounded like PPM! Just sayin'!
Good song and like the shout out to the Beatles who really turned music in a new direction in 1967 with Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club and then Magical Mystery Tour. Just 3 years removed from the She Love You - Beatles. They were incredible!
I was a HS sophomore in Sept 67 and vividly recall girls at my school wearing miniskirts and fishnet stockings. They'd cap it off with black or white go-go boots. What a time that was!
This was one of those bad Bandstand Experiments that happened occasionally. Typified by the fact that this video should be labeled I Dig Rock and Roll Music by the Mamas & Papas.
I believe Peter Paul and Mary did this, but it wasn't quite their early style. But if you listen hard, Mama's and Papa's get mentioned in the song. Nice fashions.
"We have only Black and White monitors". Dick Clark was huge cheapskate. Taped over shows. Didn't really keep an archive. What exists is mainly by accident.
My name is Reggie Jester and I danced in the 1970 contest and returned with my long time dance partner in 1971 and we placed #1 in that year. Does anyone have a clip from that contest. I have nothing sure would Like to get something. Thanks, Reg Jester 🎶🎶🎶🎶
Did you see the clip of the 1970 contest? I was the one who informed everyone here that you won in 1971, but wasn't that with a different partner? I guess you're not a regular viewer of this channel because it's been discussed much to our disappointment that the 5-30-70 Bandstand is the last episode available on YT (until 1975).
@reggie Jester Hi Reggie! I enjoyed seeing you in the ‘70 contest and, as @Keith Idota mentioned, I hear you won the ‘71 contest. Unfortunately, I only have the ‘70 contest. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/A3xQFcAq5h8/v-deo.html
Yes Keith I saw the 1970 clip and was thrilled to know it existed. Just hoped for something to show up from 1971 when me and my long time dance partner won. I was in the TV Syndication business for 30 years after bandstand experience and represented Dick Clark productions and ask him about anything from 1971 and he told me that for some reason nothing was kept for a few years including 1971. Sure wish one of the participating TV stations had kept a recording because back then no one had home recorders.

Hey Aaron, the Nitty Gritty Band performed Buy for Me the Rain in 1967 on AB. You would make me happy if you uploaded it! As for now, theres only the after-interview on youtube!
Probably the only PP&M song they could dance to. I was 11 when this song was popular but it was years later I understood it to be a satirical commentary on the contemporary music scene. I must have heard this song thousands of times but I never caught Donovan and the Beatles in the lyrics. The sounds of those artists being imitated are all very subtle and the Donovan impression sounds more like Bob Dylan. I agree they sound more like M&Ps because they're too far off from the other 2. Peter and Mary hated this song when they should have been grateful that their partner wrote them their first big hit in a long time.

I dig rock and roll music too - especially from this era and this show! Yet another great clip!!
bob343536 thank you! I dig it too!!!
This song shouldn’t have worked for Peter, Paul and Mary - but it did - and superbly !!!

Song partially written by a social studies teacher from Dearborn, Michigan High School together with Paul Stookey who was from Birmingham, Michigan.

Well it's certainly a better version than Carol Burnett's rendition she did in the inaugural season of her show in 1967.

It's not Peter Paul and Mary, Its Mama & Papas, it even has a verse about Mama Cass
If that's the case then they sure were generous allowing PPM to put it on their album and take credit for it.
