There used to be a great bar in Toronto called Albert's Hall, it was upstairs at The Brunswick House. Etta would play there every other year or so. I was lucky to see her live in that pretty small room many times. Her voice could smash your sternum, break your heart and rattle your soul. I love and miss her very much. You were right the first time: Mont-row...(it's French.) Much love to you Lizzie!
Check out the live versions of Sylvia singing "Pillow Talk" (On Soul Train) Betty Wright singing "No Pain No Gain" (Live version) Jennifer Holliday singing "And I'm Telling You" (Live version on the Tony Awards) and Angela Winbush singing "Angel" (Live version) All of these are old school soul!!!
YES POOR ETTA WENT THRU IT SHE WAS SO DRUNK ON THIS VIDEO SHE WALKED A HARD ROAD SHE SOUNDED LIKE IT HEART FULL OF ACHE GREAT JOB HONEY CHILD LOVE YOU :)
Loved your comments and reaction to the Great Etta James! Like other greats from back in the day she made you feel what she sang...'deep down in your soul'. This was an amazing live performance. And Lizzie, you mentioned that Janis Joplin had to be influenced by Etta James. Actually, both Etta and Janis were were both influenced by the great Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton. Some of Bessie's songs are Done Hearted Blues, Black Water Blues, and I Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl. Some of Big Mama's song Hound Dog, Ball and Chain, Down Home Shakedown. Suggest you react to some of them and you'll definitely hear the influence. Take care Lizz!
I'm so happy for another video from Lizzie The Gangster Hippie. I really get joy from the bliss you have just listening to her sing. The accolades showered on Etta James are well deserved! P.S. What happened to the "Livin' In A Dream" intro, Lizzie?
